Shinobies and the power of Seduction

Words are weapons -like shurikens, katanas, or jutsus- can hurt, save, or kill. A skilled shinobi in the arts of words can seduce, manipulate, coerce or induce, in order to lead others to any action, even to unleash war.

Animation by Silver Uchiha

Some ninjas can be called the most dangerous because they are not only skilled fighters, but champions in the art of words. They use words with: intentionality, psychological strategy, and effectiveness. They are smart, take account of other peoples emotions and circumstances, and calculate before they speak in order to obtain a specific result (good or evil). They are persuasive in their art of words.

Oroshimaru

Oroshimaru: A smart champion of this contest. He gained the life-time loyalty of many talented ninjas, and the love and admiration of others. He used kind words to lead them to wicked purposes.

Kimimaru Kaguya, and Zaku’s memories teaches us how skilled Oroshimaru was in the arts of vocal seduction. He kindly offered a home, a purpose of life to Kimimaru, who was a lonely uneducated child. Also to Zaku, a mistreated and hunger street’s orphan, he offered power, food and company. And we all know what he offered to Sasuke, the chance to avenge his family and revive his clan. Kabuto apparently gained somebody to admire, love, follow… like a father.

Oroshimaru targeted and victomized children which is why he is represented as a pedophile. We could only assume that he was once like those children he took advantage of, in this case an orphan- sad lonely boy… Initially he only sought knowledge, not a bad thing. But his philosophy of gaining “at any cost” (no morality) made him evil.

madaradandou

Madara and Danzou

There is a good deal of mystery surrounding these two characters. But we have seen close to perfect effectiveness in their words. About Madara - It is enough to say that he controlled many wild ninjas in the Akatsuki organization with his words. The quality of Madara’s manipulative speech is obvious every time he addresses to Sasuke; he takes into account his feelings, past, desires and personality, and therefore carefully choose what to say in order to use him.

Danzou was able to manipulate Itachi to kill his clan, compelling him to prevent a coup d’état, and possibly a war. He won over Sandaime Hokage who wanted to solve the problem by a truce, possibly a better route that would have saved more lives. Both of these guys are a master of words.

shikamaru

Shikamaru has shown potential to manipulate people at short rate. He deceived Hidan and other enemies to do exactly what he wanted in order to defeat them. He had persuaded Choji to do certain things that were out of the norms. For example, in chapter 174, Shikamaru helped Choji to regain confidence “I would’ve probably given up if it was you I was fighting against” Choji answered, “But sensei just told me that I always eat and never improve” Shika’s reply, “Didn’t I just tell you that I am me and you are you. How can we compare ourselves to each other? That’s just stupid”. More recently Shikamaru helped Naruto get lifted and keep up after Jiraya’s death.

kakashi

Kakashi is also a champion of seduction. He choses carefully his words to persuade people to do what he wants. This was obvious when he mentioned Sasuke’s name to push Naruto to success in training. Kakashi used at times acid terms to teach values and induce to teamwork. One of my favorites is in chapter 7, there Kakashi told Sasuke “you’re already heads above the others… an exposed nail should be hammered in…” Likewise he made Yamato pay a bill by flattering his ego. Kakashi only failed to stop Sasuke from leaving Konoha, thanks to the Sound Four Invitation (designed by Oroshimaru). A good sensei and a candidate for Hokage must be capable to encourage, persuade and dissuade.

ZabuzaHaku

Zabuza Momoshi seduced Haku more or less like Oroshimaru did to his preys. Haku was an orphan living in the streets; and Zabuza offered him company, a reason to go on, a dream and a path. Zabuza also used words to induce fear in his enemies. Just remember that memorable first battle against team seven, Sasuke was shaking.

Raiga (anime only) manipulated Ranmaru almost in the same way. But what he offered was looked like “freedom” a chance to get out of his hut and see the world.

varios

The most powerful shinobies, like highly ranked military, must master the art of words. For example Neji, Gaara and Shino used the cold truth to induce suffering or fear; Ibiki with a few well selected words obtains what he wants being an interrogator. Kabuto and Itachi also manages the art of words like all spies do. Particularly Itachi succeeded long over Sasuke will, and negotiated with Madara. And many may disagree, but I think Sasuke is among the most seductive and manipulative; otherwise he couldn’t have control over Taka, taken over Oroshimaru, or deal with Madara. Other ninjas used the art of words in Naruverse, like Jiraya; and in a lesser level even Anko and Iruka, but having kids as their objective.

hokages

All the kages in Naruverse, like politicians and diplomatist of the modern world, master the art of words and strategy, in order to attain victory in the elections, negotiations and diary events. They even lie, take advantage of other people feelings and necessities and use them to attain their goal (war, peace, power…).

Quote: I call them disciples of Maquiavelo, Goebbels and Sun Tsu. Maquiavelo was the Italian who wrote “The Prince”, and justifies the use of any measure to attain a goal. Goebbels was Hitler’s propagandist, and father of modern publicity and propaganda, he said more or less “lie, lie, lie; and something will take root”. Sun Tsu was the chinese general which wrote “The Art of war” masterpiece in military strategy, that includes advise about what to said [sic] or not, to allies and subordinates.

Note: Few people in this world are clear as water and speak always from their hearts, like Naruto. That is a good reason to hear my granddad’s advice: think in all possible consequences at short and long rate, before act, chose or react. We are not animals to follow any person blindly, or act by mere impulse. Furthermore even if we had fallen, we can open our eyes and stand again.

And you: Are you a hunter or prey in the game of words?

I like how you induced Machiavelli, Goebbels an Sun Tzu in this “art of deception” blog…
…but Goebbels was indoctrinated himself, so he wasn’t the root of it all… but i don’t want to talk about this in this blog…

Actually, every ninja must have the ability of deceipt… you notice the constant “fooling around” in every blog… a ninja must be one step ahead to win a battle…

ex: Ninja 1: No, you caught me !!
    Ninja 2: Mwahaha, ph34r mah 1337
*Ninja 1 was just a shadow clone*
    Ninja 2: OMG NOES !!!
    Ninja 1: Pwnt

Really bad example… but i’m bad at explaning things…

The power of words can change a person.Sadly I suck at manipulating people. A person must be extremely intelligent and mean spiritted to manipulate someone. What is sad is that alot of people can be taken in by a gesture or kind words. One must be careful

    Excellent Blog SU…!

All I can Say That Being a Master Of Words Can Truly Make What One Desires To do..

Even Though Deceiving Is A Bad Thing, But It Must Be Done In order To Get Important Details And To Say it The Most Vicious Way, When Interrogating And Asking Questions That others Won’t Answer…

Choosing Words Can Be Very Important For Your Influence To Others.. *Ive Learned This The Hard Way..* Saying What You Really Want To Say Is Hard But Sometimes We Need To Choose Our Words Specifically In order For Us Be Understandable….

this serves as a good lesson.. and one should know this.. after all … ALL PEOPLE LIE!.. There’s No Exception!..

And To Those Who Are easily deceived.. Don’t Worry You’ll Learn in Time..
*its Fun to Deceive People..* hehehe…

*to taunt.. Or To Be Diplomatic..* im good At That.. hehehe…

and recently Ive Learned That Being ALWAYS diplomatic… can be troublesome.. Have a good equation of being naughty, scary and peaceful.. and everything should be in control!..

oh and.. feelings matter too..*be Like Sai.. * (although he’s crazy, funny and weird..)

    Thats All ThankYou..

    Have A nice Day..

You did it again, SU! :)

My co-workers and I were often told to take notice of the commonality among all the leaders in our company. Most of them, if not all, have charisma and the gift of gab. What better way to exude charisma than articulating it into hard truths or sugarcoated lies.

Words are powerful weapons. They can pierce deeper than the sharpest swords and create hollowness inside one’s soul. Conversely, words are also great ego-soothers and can create illusions of greatness. Depending on the user, words can either create heaven or hell here on earth.

In the Naruverse, I think the master of the art of words is Itachi. His kind words had given comfort to young Sasuke during their younger days. However, it was his parting words in the night of the Uchiha massacre which planted the seed of angst into Sasuke’s heart. Lastly, Itachi’s last words communicated his greater love towards his brother.

P.S. I personally disagree with Machiavellian methods. The end does not and will not justify the means.

    >>>Hey guys u know this cool blog reflects on how .. a person deliver his words… a lot of times when i talked to people and they always believed in me and follow me even though sometimes it’s a lie…..or fraud… and said to myself are they stupid or something??! why they keep on following me even I’m wrong it’s soo weird because of this i can see how words can be so powerful… even if you do it for GooD or Evil… it doesn’t matter it only matters on how u deliver your words because word come first than aCtion…. lets just say it this way,,, plan is made first before executing it… ^^

Awesome blog as usual SU, but I have a question. I believe you said before but you don’t primarily speak English … I think you said you spoke Spanish?

I ask this because I’ve noticed in some of your blogs you use different spelling and I just noticed that it wasn’t misspelling… and here’s my question… do you know if other languages translate names to your language? I know English tries to keep foreign words the same as their home language primarily among names so when you mentioned Maquiavelo I was at first confused because I know him as Machiavelli.

Which brought to mind something else though more realworld than Naruverse. A person proficient in linguistics is a master of words. Most people don’t notice but when you learn to speak another language, most people learn to speak correctly but not the right way. Kind of confusing but it makes sense.

I notice it in the Army alot. What happens is thus: You are a native speaker of a language. Someone else learned that language. You hear them speaking your language only what they say and what it means are wrong. Now, what they said is entirely correct but the way they said it means something else. Essentially, Lost in Translation.

You know, this idea didn’t seem that hard to communicate when I started typing. I wish I some concrete examples.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond.

SU, this is why you are one of my favorite writers on this site. The emotion, the in-depth knowledge, the research, never overlooking the subtleties, and the awesome graphics, this was one awesome blog.

I agree that Sasuke has the potential to be the most manipulative, but that all depends on what move he makes toward the Tobi situation; just who is in control? I’d like to think Kishi is outdoing even the Itachi illusion with Sasuke, going the extra mile to whipe out any doubt that Sasuke has a secret plan, then, BAM, he springs it on us, even more dramatically than his older brother did.

Orochimaru is a sad soul, I heard in a Kishi interview that there is NO good left in his heart, so his manipulations are all for personal gain, no matter how concerned he really looked, like with Kabuto or Kimmimaru.

Amazing job Silver, keep it up!

Thank you all! Wow I have loved all your comments, it was a great reading.

I am SORRY SORRY SORRY!. I came late to my own post. I was convinced that was scheduled for another day.

Never new that it was Machiavelli in English, thank you for teaching me. Maquiavelo is the proper spelling in Spanish. – Goebblels and Sun Tzu, my mistake (new it but messed up) SORRY

    @
8 CHAOS: Goebbles was indoctrinates in politics, but he created the communication strategy, give him credit.
13 INGELUND: That is a mysteries.
16 - IRUKA: Me to. I can’t seduce neither manipulate, not even to save my life, basically because I can’t lie, loss track of my own words, I am plain, just speack from my heard.
But interrogation is something different; there I can beat Ibiki, in Spanish. Interrogation or interviewing is mostly about catching people on contradictions, and use logic to made conclusions, show the contradictions, and push the person over and over to explain. It’s really easy if you hear every detail, and see the body language, and voice tone variations also. I really fun.
7 SHADOW NINJA “i have not seen SU in a while” - Thanks. You are so sweet to notice it. I had been isolated. EXAMS!
20 RiVaL DeaThWiSh. “everybody lie”. NO!. I learned in the bad way like you! But later I meet honest people that made me to regain trust on people.
26 TENKAGE: Thanks. Same famous names have translation to Spanish, others keep the original spelling. I am not sure about other languages. Sorry, my English is no good enough. (just basic knowledge from school).
Quote: Wittgenstein said: we never know if people understand what we are saying. For example when a woman say “we never go out”, mean “I love, I miss you”, but man understands “you are a failure”, said John Gray.
27 SSJ – Thanks! I like your theory; Definitely Sasuke is hiding something.
    “Never Give Up” Great SSJ!

    AGAIN THANK YOU ALL !!
