The Fourth Hokage:
Sadly we haven’t seen much of this Konoha legend in action so most info on him comes from the testimony of other characters in the story. What we do know about Minato is that he was the Jounin who trained Kakashi and that he was the one who defeated Kyuubi by sealing him inside Naruto’s body. In chapter 367 of the manga, the Yondaime’s name was finally revealed – Namikaze Minato. His surname, Namikaze means wind and waves or discord. The first symbol, nami is the word in Japanese for waves, and the second kanji, kaze means wind, hence the translation. It is rather fitting a surname, considering that Minato was known for his quick speed on the battlefield, as quick as wind.
The most dangerous thing about Minato was his insane speed, gained thanks to his Body Flicker Jutsu (Shunshin no Jutsu). This jutsu instantly transports him to anyplace he wants, hence the nickname “Yellow Flash of Konoha” and can be used over long distances as long as he knows exactly where he’s going. Another jutsu that Minato uses involes special kunais. These kunais are made so wherever they are thrown, the 4th Hokage can immediately teleport to its location. This technique is particularly effective on large numbers of enemies; Minato will simply distribute his special kunai to ally ninja and tell them to throw them at different targets at the same time, then simply teleport to the location and finish off his opponents. This attack can literally defeats a whole army almost instantly. Minato is also one of only four people in the Naruto world able to use the Rasengan, as well as its creator. While we don’t know the peculiars of the Rasengan’s birth, we do know it took Minato three years to perfect the technique. Based on Gamabunta’s testimony we also know that Minato was able to use the Summoning Jutsu to summon frogs just like his teacher. As a last resort Minato has the ability to call on the most power and most dangerous Jutsu that he himself created, the Demonic Soul Seal, the Jutsu that sealed Kyuubi inside Naruto.
Minato was the sensei of Hatake Kakashi, Uchiha Obito, and Rin. At an overall glance, he had quite a strong team: Kakashi was a genius in his own right, graduating from the ninja academy at 5 and becoming a chuunin at 6; Obito who had the bloodline capabilities to become a Sharigan user; and Rin, a respectable medical ninja – and they were all only 13 years old. Yet despite a seemingly strong showing, much like Team 7, they had their differences.
Perhaps what made Minato a great teacher was that he did not show any favouritism towards any particular student. When the team almost botched in dealing with only one enemy ninja against the three of them, he reprimanded all of them, pointing out their weaknesses and stressing they cannot work individually – it was important for them to work together as a team.
Minato has been described as a “nice kid”, well-liked by his peers and others around him. He spoke when it was necessary and listened when someone needed a friend. Given by the opinion of many of the villagers, Minato was an excellent leader, as many people revered him and what he had done to protect the villagers from the Kyuubi. The Hokage title certainly speaks much for that itself, while indeed it honors the strongest shinobi in the village, it also carries much weight on it as well – the person must be able to lead the village, hand out missions, and deal with matters concerning other hidden villages.
Without a doubt, Minato was an intelligent shinobi, deemed “genius” by his former sensai, Jaraiya. He graduated from the academy at the age of 10, two years earlier than all the current shinobi of Naruto’s generation. He developed many new jutsu, including the shunshin no jutsu, rasengan, and shiki fujin. Many state that no one can ever match in power or intelligence to the Yondaime. Not only is he able to execute jutsu, he was able to create new ones based on his current knowledge. That takes not only book smarts, but creativity as well. He is also cunning, able to come up with mission plans quickly upon hearing the situation, as seen when he requested that the five leaf shinobi just throw out all the kunai knives they had, and he would finish off all the enemies. Undoubtedly, his power and combined intelligence made him the genius ninja he was, and more than deserving of the Hokage title.
Unfortuneatly we also don’t know a great deal about the family of lineage Namikaze Minato came from. And for most of Naruto, it was presumed that he had passed away without ever revealing more about his personal life. With the release of chapter 367, Kishimoto revealed that Minato did have a love interest, Uzumaki Kushina, a ninja of the former Whirlpool Country. She was noted to have a tomboyish demeanor, always jabbering away and acting like on of the boys. Despite red hair that matched her temperamental personality, she grew up to be very beautiful. It has not been indicated as to how long Minato had known her and whether they were married or soon planning to marry, but both Jiraiya and Tsunade appear to have known her quite well. And Minato and Kushina’s relationship was strong enough, as the two left behind a child after dying during the Nine Tails’ attack and the aftermath of it – Yes, Naruto, our title boy of the series. There were many that doubted this to be true due to such uncertainty, but indeed Naruto gets his spiky blonde hair and blue eyes from Minato, though his personality and ninjutsu style come in large part from his mother Kushina, as well as his surname. Kakashi stated that he believed the only one who would surpass the Yondaime would be Naruto, a ninja who is the legacy and carries the bloodline of that genius shinobi in his veins.
The Fourth Hokage had not been hokage for very long before sacrificing himself to save the village. Evidence of this can be found in the Kakashi Gaiden series, as Yondaime isn’t wearing his cape, and he wouldn’t be leading his team on a mission if he were hokage at that point already. At that time, Kakashi was about 9-10 years old (Kakashi had stated that “I was younger than Naruto when I became a jonin”, and he was not yet a jonin at this point). At the beginning of the Naruto series, Kakashi is about 26 years old, so subtracting 12 (Naruto’s age at that time) means Kyuubi attacked when Kakashi was about 14 years old. So at the very most, the 4th could only have been hokage for 5 years, though it was probably even less than that.

If Naruto’s second chakra is water, that would make sense, since his father has the wind, And i agree with you Ilooklikegaara47, since he is the son of the fourth, he should inherited so much from him, but since he doesn’t know at the moment, I don’t think he knows he can access those powers yet. Also, you have to remember, just becuase he’s the son of the fourth, doesn’t mean he inherits all his things, he also has his mothers techniques.

Yeah krazelicens, but his mother is from the former whirlpool country, so you have to assume that she also is a water type user. You are right about not inherating everything becuase h obviously hasn’t gotten his father’s “genius”.
i understand that now, i just misread what you had written. it would make a lot of sense if his second element was water. i wonder what would happen if he put water element into rasengan. what affects would it have on it?

Thanks for the history lesson Quazzie. It is well done. Ryeno one of Kushina’s Uzamaki’s signiture jutsu’s is the shadow clone jutsu. It is also on of Naruto’s signitures movess. It is to bad more info about Kushina is not available.

Awesome Job! I’ve been enjoying all the info about all the Hokages and I thank you for all your hard work going into all of this. Minato seems like one those “man’s man” type. Great guy to know, strong, smart … every girl wants him and every guy wants to be his friend.
I’d actually like to know more about Kushina. I know info is like next to nill, but she sounds like she could hang with the guys. I also wonder if she’s even dead. I think she may be alive and living in the Whirlpool Country. Still, I wonder if she’s been in contact with the village and finding out about Naruto? Hmmm, too many questions, so few answers.

I also think she’s still alive. She may have gone back to the Whirlpool Country, and gets updated on Naruto, or maybe she’s still in Kanoha, and she’s in ANBU. Don’t all ANBU need to keep their identity a secret no matter what, even if you have to leave a child behind?
I mean thats just a theory and thats a bit hard for me to believe, and i thought it.

great post. i think you might have wanted to wait a little on this one though because i think kishi will reveal more about minato later in the manga, but this was great for what you had to work with. and you can always just write another one with updated info later.
Do you think Minato was the greatest hokage/shinobi ever?
Someone asked if Kushina is actually dead…Well she supposedly dies in the battle against the Kyuubi, but who knows what actually happened to her. Just as know one REALLY knows if Yondaime is dead, no one REALLY knows if she is as well.
ALong the lines of Naruto being the heir to the Body Flicker technique, I think he sure will learn that. I mean it would be such a raw move to see Naruto take out Pein with the Spiral Rasengan and faking him out by using the body flicker, along with some clones…oooo boy that would be the sickest move.

hey i think that itachi did not want to do any of this i think that he was forced by marada to kill his best friend and then itachi had the eyes and his eyes controled him to go make sauake into who he is now and at the end of his life itach reagined his control and did one last thing to honur their bond
the eye control i got from when itachi showed marada growing up it said that he was controled to take his brother’s eyes by his own M.S.
wouldnt it be cool if naruto could use the technigue his father had created that made him the yelow falsh of khona and combined it with the rasengean and the shadow clone.wow that would be something each clone would be able to move at the speed of light and have a rasengen
I think that Kakashi has respect for other ninjas and their abilities and won’t use the Sharingan just to copy other peoples techniques. I mean if that were the case, there would be no use for any other ninjas. Kakashi would be a one man army. I’m sure he’s aware of it as well as the Rasengan (remember when he was amazed that Naruto could use it, even if it was incomplete). Plus, it may be a forbidden jutsu since the death of the 4th.

I agree with you on your second idea Sokka. I don’t believe the Body FLicker ability was even possible to be copied. The move was most likely too fast and put too much stress on a person’s body other than Minato (since he was the creator). And it also wouldn’t surprise me if it were a forbbiden jutsu seeing as Minato had a knack for creating jutsu that were illegal lol.
But ya know I had just a bit of a side thought, i know this is way off topic and is most likely completely false but Minato sealed the Kyuubi into to halfs right, the light and the dark. Well wouldn’t it be interesting if Pein were the dark half. Jaraiya had just been talking about the seperate halfs before his fight with Pein and Minato, Naruto, and Pein all half somewhat similar apperences.
Maybe the reason why Pein would have lost the fight had Jaraiya been able to tell the secret is because Jaraiya knew how to control and seal the Kyuubi’s power, therefore he would have been abnle to completely stop Pein in his tracks…But as I said, it’s just a thought.
that is an interesting thought. I think it was dicussed briefly, about how only the light half of Kyuubi was sealed in Naruto. It makes one wonder though … where’s the dark half? Is it even sealed in a jinchuuriki? Does Madara possess the dark kyuubi as a pet? Inquiring minds want to know!
if naruto learned body flicker he would be a way better ninja since he lacks speed and with the shadow clone jutsu he can combined them to make some ultra techniques but no matter what sasuke would still beat him…….
I just wish they would flashback to a battle with minato. Even a mini skirmish would be enough, I just want to see his stances and styles. I bet his hand signs are invisible.
Thats’ a great theory about the light and dark sides of Kyuubi being sealed. But, if he sealed the light side into Naruto when he did the sealing, wouldn’t the one he sealed the dark side have to be in the village at that time? If it had happen to be sealed in to Pein, that means he had to be there during the attack. Maybe the fourth sealed it within Kushina, which maybe a reason that either she’s dead or just not in the picture at the moment.

WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE TSUNADE AND J-SAMA NEVER MADE REFERENCE TO KUSHINA DYING IN BATTLE. WELL, WAS KUSHINA AT HER HUSBAND AND LEFT KONOHA AND WENT INTO HIDING… JUST A THOUGHT
I Was just thinking…
If the Top officials of the Village are the ones in charge of choosing a Hokage, the Officials would be like the Political Bureau. In addition, the Hokage would be the President/Prime Minister. The Hokage is so powerful, and in charge of the village that He could actually do anything he wants. And… this society sounds like a Totalitarian society! I think this is what is happening to the Rain Village right now with Pein. Luckily, the Hokage’s in the Fire Village are noble and honest.
Assuming Naruto also inherited a WATER-based chakra either from his father (since ‘Nami’ means wave) or from his mother (since she’s from the whirlpool country), that would make Naruto a formidable ninja, and superior to Sasuke. His Wind chakra beats Sasuke’s Lightning (according to Kakashi) and his Water chakra would beat Sasuke’s fire. I really did think Naruto should have a Water chakra. Or at least Sakura should, since naruto already has the wind. Well, i’ll have something to look forward to. So long, naruto fans.

I also want to know if their were still relatives or namikaze’s clan alive the will help develop naruto as a ninja or tell the tales of the 4th, maybe Grandparents or a uncle? would that be great!!! as in his lineage is good because he is a genius man. unlike, naruto whos kinda more like trait is kinda mothers side Kushina like wild and wacky anyways, its also great because naruto’s humor is also good. from what i said about the fourth sealing the dark side into Kushina, he could have sealed it within him self knowing that it would die since he was going to, thats what the third was going to do to Orochimauru.
and the part about Naruto being superior to Sasuke, I’m not to sure. Yes I believe they’d be equals. But their chakras would all cancel out each other, wind beats lightning, but lightning beats water, water beats fire, but fire beats wind. depending on what they used against each other i think they’d just even each other out.

That’s the reason. He used the Demonic Soul Seal, which needs a sacrafice in order to use, and he sacraficed himself.

ehm i dont think Pein have the dark side of kyuubis power inside him.. But naruto have the good/light side of kyuubis power inside him , Jiraiya says that i remember .. But as in the old manga or the histories it says Madara asked the kyuubi to lend him some power to defeat his father and kyuubi agreed and gave him some power but Madara got his asss kicked by his father (the tengu demon) but then he sealed him.
its maybe not true but it says that in the histories ..But if naruto got the light side of the kyuubi, madara maybe have the other half .. eh i dont know

i don’t know if anybody said this before but it just hit me. Minato’s Body Flicker Jutsu (Shunshin no Jutsu) is exactly the same as Goku’s Instant Transmition from DBZ.
And Kakashi Gaiden was when Kakashi became a Jonin, remember he was the team leader because of it and they all gave him presents.
I was thinking the same exact thing on Minato’s body flicker technique. Pretty much down to last detail: as long as they both know where they’re going, they can get there in a flash.
Shikamaru you are right but you know that Kishimoto is a big fan of DBZ and Toriyama work.So its not that strange.Kishi copy not just body flicker jutsu but even Naruto and Goku clothes are the same(orange with blue-in part 1) and some other stuff.But neverless Kishi is different then Toriyama-I think he is way better.A true genius!!!I hope Kishi read this:)
i also think he copied Goku’s signature move, Minato and Naruto’s signature move is the rasengan which is a bit similar to Goku’s kamehameha. They both are the moves they usually move and they’re both blue, but that’s not much of a similarity.

you think maybe the body flicker that Minato used had to do with his wind element chakra and a seal? Cause it would make sense if he could manipulate the air around him to move him from place to place. It would kind of like how pein can manipulate the rain in the area around him and sense what each rain drop is doing. Maybe Minato used his wind chakra kind of like the byakugan and could know where all his enemies are and teleport/flicker over there so fast by using the wind. just a thought.

the 4th hokage is the strongest hokage that the konoha have ever had in my opinion. his speed is fast but can he defeat itachi if h was still alive ?
im not really sure weather or not naruto (his son) can learn the god of thunder jutsu since half of his genes came from the 4th but it could just be a jutsu that anyone could use if they are really skilled ?

It’s not exactly the same actually. Though both can teleport to any place they want, Minato still needs to place a tag onto the place he wants to teleport. It’s not just as free as Goku’s. Minato NEEDS the tags to teleport.
inato is the coolest and the strongest hokage but i want know why know one ever told naruto who his parents were that is really bad how they didnt tell him

I think Minato flash jutsu is just a teleportation like Madara. A space/time transportation. Like a void or somthing which he can bend space and time to jump through in a instant. Or it could be that it has something to do with his wind element, but there only one person who knows and it’s kishi himself. But Dang, we have to wait that long to find out.
