Naruto Chapter 389: Amertarasu… Amesuretsu… Ama- ahhh, screw it.

With his Tsukuyomi pwned by Sasuke, Itachi knows that playing more of his genjutsu games would be pointless. With his prize right in front of him, Itachi is not going to hold back anything. He switches to his right eye and transforms from the most powerful genjutsu technique to the most powerful ninjutsu technique in his arsenal: Amaterasu.
Meanwhile, Zetsu continues to play his little peeping game and conveniently provides commentary on the whole battle by having a conversation between his two halves. But seriously, I think Zetsu is really getting railed so far in the manga. I mean the guy is a pretty cool and unique character, yet he’s always given the observer role or is cleaning up someone else’s mess. When’s Zetsu gonna get some battle time so we can see what he is really made of? End of rant.
Itachi performs the hand seals to activate the Amaterasu, but appears to be slower compared to his performance earlier in the battle. Sasuke’s counter is to use his incredible speed to prevent Itachi from forming his seals. He uses the old Shadow Shuriken trick on Itachi with Chidori enhanced blades. Itachi is forced to jump through the gap between the two giant shurikens, but Sasuke has one more trick to this attack. Sasuke pulls on two wires still attached to his shurikens and causes the blades to detach and fly in different direction.
To Zetsu’s surprise, Itachi is hit in the leg by one of the blades, even though this level of attack is something he could normally dodge with ease. The reason? Itachi is still feeling the side effects of his failed Tsukuyomi attempt. He is still disorientated and even has trouble focusing his vision.
Knowing that he now had the advantage, Sasuke steps up his offensive and unleashes a Grand Fireball on Itachi. Despite his leg wound, Itachi manages to get airborne to avoid being toasted. However Sasuke also leaps into the air and prepares to give Itachi a taste of his Chidori. But the quick-thinking Itachi always has an escape plan. He counters with his own Grand Fireball to stop Sasuke’s charge, and uses the recoil to propel himself through the ceiling and onto the roof of the building complex.
Sasuke manages to shrug off most of the burns by partially activating his cursed seal to protect himself. Now both Uchiha brothers are on the roof and each prepares to unleash another round of fire jutsus. As their blasts of fire collide, it is clear that Sasuke is quickly overpowering Itachi. But what appears to be a certain victory for Sasuke suddenly reverses itself as Itachi unveils what he has been hiding this whole time. The black tendrils of the Amaterasu explode in a spectacular blossom. It quickly consumes Sasuke’s fire blast with Sasuke himself as its next target.
Finally, we get to see the Amaterasu in action. Itachi must have confidence in his control of this attack because he still needs Sasuke intact (his eyes at least) in order to claim his prize at the end. It’s interesting to note that the black flames look more like strands of fiber than plumes of a fireball. My thinking is that the Amaterasu is not just an intensely hot fire element attack, but is a form of dimensional rifting jutsu like the one Kakashi had used on Deidara. You can think of the attack like creating a miniature blackhole, and rather than burn the target, Amaterasu literally consumes it by pulling it into another dimension. If you think about it, this makes sense. This is how Itachi managed to escape from Jiraiya’s toad stomach summon back when they fought. Jiraiya commented that he was surprised that Itachi could burn a hole through the stomach of a mountain toad that was highly resistant to fire. Well, that’s because Itachi’s Amaterasu isn’t a fire element jutsu at all. With that said, this will be something Sasuke could have a real hard time with because how do you counter something that will consume everything you throw at it? But then again he was certainly ready to take on Itachi’s Tsukuyomi, is it possible that Sasuke has also prepared something to defeat the Amaterasu?
One more thing to note: Itachi is bleeding from his eye while he performed the Amaterasu. I don’t think this is a normal part of the jutsu activation process. I think Itachi is pushing himself to the limits to pull off this attack on Sasuke. If Sasuke can somehow escape the Amaterasu, I’m sure Itachi would be in such an exhausted state that Sasuke would have no problem achieving victory.

Sasuke prob has some escape plan or a way to counteract the amaterasu. Think about it, sasuke was able to break free of the genjutsu unscathed. Orochi must of gave him a game plan on Itachi and his power.
Well, according to Itachi, that fire can “burn forever”. No other jutsu can do that. So there’s a couple reasons I can think of that Itachi would have to use the MS. One: The MS contains the sixth element that allows the fire to be E-V-I-L! Second: The MS could allow him to minipulate that crazy lookin’ chakara that looks like it’s alive. Could be that he got the Amaterasu after killing his clan. Just a theory. ^_^

Its cool how now they are fighting out in the open. Maybe Kisame and HEbi will be able to see and Jugo will take on Zetsu. Thats my hope at least.
Sasuke definitely knows that 3 barrier jutsu of Orochimaru’s, even one of the Sound 4 used it against Kiba when Sasuke first left Konoha.

i think sasuke will activate his lv 2 and fly over the attack then he will use the jutsu he was going to use when he first met naruto again till snakey stoped him.
I hope Zetsu does get into a fight. I am sick of him guest watching fights and then cleaning up the mess. and when Sasuke blocks the attack Itachi is done. I wonder if we will see the jutsu that Orochi told Sasuke not to use when Team 7 was visiting Sasuke.
hey remember how madara demon behind him have four sharingan, i think each sharingan provides him with different jutsu and here are the four MS powers: Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, sasooni (i cant remember the name), and the EMS. Maybe madara wants kakashi MS because it has a new set of powers that he havent gotten yet
Sasuke had to go lvl 2 to beat Tsukuyomi, I don’t think kishi will repeat that against amaterasu, that would be boring.
The barrier gates might be damaged from NAruto/Kyuubi attack. All the gates were broken.

Nice,as usually.I think that this fight is gona be a tie(although I want Sasuke to be a winner).Even if Sasuke somehow beat amaterasu,Zetsu or someone else will step up and save Itachis evil ass of being kill.(I guess I spell that wrong but i hope you can understand).So what I mean to say-this fight is over and it will be a draw.

Well I got a feeling Itachi is going to end up completely blind in the battle then he would not be able to get sasuke’s eyes but then when Sasuke goes for the final strike Itachi says that b4 he is killed he’ll teach sasuke a new jutsu to defeat Madara.

Great post Bob I kinda feel srry for Itachi though. And I don’t think Kakashi will ever go blind because his eye was transplanted and he developed his differently.
i knew that itachi was pushing himself way too far with the MS.it uses alot of chakra and for him to activate for so long is finally taking its toll.we already saw how bad his eyesight had became when he first activated it,but i believe its actually getting worse as the fight progresses.but i cant tell if its the side effects ot tsukiyomi or him going blinder.im lead to believe that its the later because it shows his left eye squinting (just like kakashi) and his vision is really bad(seeing multiple people),but when itachi switches to his right eye,the vision is better

ITACHI IS DEFINETLY PUSHING HIMSELF BY USING AMATERASU AND TSUKIYOMI.I cant believe that his EYE IS BLEEDING,even though i want sasuke to win i almost feel sorry for itachi.i can feel his desperation.remember after itachi and kisame fought jiraiya.itachi said something like i used tsukiyomi and was even forced to use amaterasu,he unactivated his sharingan and and said that he needed to rest.he used tsukiyomi twice that episode,even though he only used it once so far he has had it activated for a really long time and it got countered which i think made it worse.

3. the gates are a summon, and like a dead manda, i highley doubt you would be able to use broken gates for a summon unless items have different qualities of a summom

5. itachi is crazy remeber you see him laugh like no tommorrow in the genjutsu so he proabably has something up his sleeve also

Right, I agree to some extent with Nameless. I do believe Sasuke will be hit with the Amaterasu but not directly. Whatever happens next I believe will push these two fighters to their limits and within the next two chapters or so we should have a victor (FINALLY!!). Sasuke will definetley be using that “trump card” soon though.

I have two things to say. First, I don’t care who wins because i don’t like Sasuke or Itachi so i dont really care. Second of all, Bob this is for you, I think we have seen Zetsu with some fighting action. Think back to Jiraiya versus Pein. They were all people Jiraiya had seen before, so that meant Zetsu was spying on him, but what do you think Zetsu does with the bodies he consumes? Just a thought.

the battle is great so far! i was just wandering – what really can sasuke do against this attack? if his sharingan is not powerful enough (not MS yet) he has only orochis jutsus left (and his tricky traps with steel wires attached to shuriken)? i highly doubt that orochis jutsus can defend against itachis powerful attack (it even tore jirayas frog stomach trap)!
Well we should pay attention to NAruto cause I have a feeling they were very similar and Naruto will continue to follow the path of his father.

Elerium you’re right, Sasuke doesn’t have much left. He may even go Curse 2 to defend him, but I don’t neccessarily think he will completely evade the attack even with the Curse ro Orochi’s justu, so you’re right.

Sasuke might use the jutsu that he was told not to use byOrochi. remember when team7 visited Sasuke at Orochi’s dean. Orochi told Sasuke not to use that jutsu. I bet it is some kick ass jutsu. Anyway if Sasuke dodges the attack which I think he capaple of because Itachi’s aim will be lousy.It looks like Itachi has lost nearly all of his eyesight. So all Sasuke has to do is go back to the basics and sneak up and finish off Itachi. This fight better end soon or something big happens it like Zetsu getting involved.

Zetsu might have the both the ying/yang chakra.The light side is good while the darkside is the dark charkra. If you all you ate was humans, you to would have a split personality like Zetsu

Hi NTG Zetsu might be in the same clan as the first hokage. Zetsu might of wanted imortality desided to use his kekkei genkei ability and make himself a plant. Plants can live a long time. Zetsu got his split personallity from his the plant. It changed his origanal personality.His true personality is trying to battle the other for supremicey. That is why we hear two Zetsus. In order to maintain his link to humanity Zetsu has to eat humans. If he doesn’t the plant side takes over and Zetsu becomes a plant.

This chapter was such a let down that nobody really is here to talk about it. There was no cliff hanger. The hipe of Itachi vs Sasuke fight is wearing off. This fight has to end soon. I hope that someone puts a new blog up soon. Give us something to write about.

Iruka, i like the idea of the ying and yang that zetsu has a dark and light side but its a little creepy
so we all agree that zetsu have both ying and yang side to his personalities: the light side is probably childish like tobi & the dark side is the one that pick up dead bodies and eat them. this bring me to a conclusion that zetsu doesnt want to kill anyone because his good side would get in the way or something

Actually Sharingan Leader I had a little theory about that too, that Itachi made up the whole “gotta kill your best friend to achieve the ultimate power” story. See I thought the purpose of that may have been to get Naruto out of the way because Madara was afraid he/the kyuubi would interfere with his plans, but that wouldn’t make too much sence seeing that Madara/Akatsuki need the Kyuubi.

But what ever. and the black fire looks like Sai’s Drawing stuff. and when Itachi used that in the frog’s stomach that Jiraiya trapped him in………. didnt he have to seal it in a scroll for it to be safe??? maybe sasuke has a scroll to suck it up……………………. a really BIG scroll…… but a scroll none the less.
man, itachi will surely die here if his eyes condition would get worses as the battle goes on..sasuke’s really become so powerful..i really think he’s way ahead of naruto now even if naruto has the rasen-shuriken..but then again, he’s naruto..he’s won so many fights against strong opponents

i think after this attack itachi will go fully blind cos lets face it when the battle first started lets say he had become about 25% blind, then after the Tsukuyomi he became like 60-75% blind, so after amaterasu he will become either 100% blind or to exhausted to fight anymore and sasuke kills him and proves himself strong enough to get the MS, and then after a few more chapters it will be sasuke Vs madara and sasuke will somehow kill him and take his eyes to make EMS

Itachi has to go all out now, pushing his limits, cause no matter what he is going to go blind, thats a fact. If you think about it, now is his best chance of getting Sasuke’s eyes, Itachi’s eyesight is only getting worse as time passes so the longer he waits the harder it will be for him to beat Sasuke. He totally underestimated his younger bro.

When Sasuke’s Sharingan dialated I think it became a new Sharingan and he will then use all his rage and advance to level three Curse. But what if Orochimaru long ago took over the Demon Snake’s bod?

Yondaime- I don’t think that Any Kage would get affected by a Genjutsu cause theyre too smart enough to know it is Genjutsu
Kage bunshin is the japenese for a shadow clone. and yeah i think they do get effected by genjutsu cause whatever they experience gets relayed to the original once the clone goes poof.
Hey you guys notice how when Itachi’s sight went blurry in this chapter he had his right eye closed and then opened it and closed his left. Its like he is conserving his sight or something else.
Now before I share what I about to say I have to just say that I am not promoting drunk driving and that it is a really stupid and dangerous thing to do. Ok, well when you are drunk and your vision starts to blur and you see double – like Itachi is seeing now – you can close one eye to stop seeing double and alternate which eye is open to refocus the blurriness. It works and it is exactly what Itachi is doing.
I’m bringing this up cause I don’t know if Itachi’s vision is completely related to his overuse of MS it could be that he is tired and hurt. His vision went blurry only after he was hit by Sasuke Shadow Shurieken attack.

good point. Itachi is probably exhausted. But the question is why does it look there is blood coming from his eyes? Itachi maybe exhausted but you got to think his eye is damaged someway from overstraining. It could have been damaged from when sauke broke free of the genjutsu.
Maybe his eyes bleeding is apart of the jutsu.

wow. luv ur contribution as always Bob. the sharingan puts it user at a disadvantage (ie blindness) and so i conclude that this is not a great weapon. also after viewing the battle i am of the opinion that one needs to possess additional combat skills and thats wat sasuke has illustrated. I am disappointed in Itachi. I expected more from him. Quite frankly at this stage I am not expecting the amaterasu to have much effect on sasuke ….. or should I? cant wait for the next episode
Itachi has other skills as a ninja. He was a member of the ambu. But yeah after he got the MS all he did was use those eyes for attacks. I think Sasuke will get the attack off but Sasuke will dodge it. You got to think Itachi’s aim will be bad. He does look exhausted and he looks like his vision is bad.

I htink Itachi way under estimated Sasuke. Itachi is full of himself too. always saying you need the MS to be able defeat him. Itachi needs a dose of reality. On the same note so does Sasuke. His ego is overflaighted and his attitude sucks. I hoe Itachi defeat sasuke but sasuke is mortalu wounded. i am sick of the Uchiha clan and arrogance.
Maybe it will end in a draw but if Sasuke escapes the ameratsu i think Itachi will be to tired to go on.
I am pretty sure someone will dead at the end of the battle. This was the most anticipated fight after all. And another thing, there can only be one Uchiha left. I hope both brothers die but I dought that will happen. One of them has live to act as an antagonist for Naruto.

Well I highly dount Sasuke will actually die. We are all anticipating the new Sasuke and Naruto battle and I know Kishi knows that as well. So killing Sasuke is a no go, Itachi on the other hand, what more does he have to play in the story now? I’m 200% positive Sasuke will make it out alive, wether he has both his eyes after the battle, I can’t be sure of…
