Everything worked out according to Jiraiya’s plan as he finally faces Pein one-on-one while the others are incapacitated. Pein performs a hand seal to summon something but Jiraiya leaps immediately at him and sends him flying into the wall with a powerful kick. At the same moment, both Ma and Pa start their genjutsu song and capture all three members of Pein’s team in what appears to be a watery prison held in place by four armored toad warriors. Jiraiya informs Pein that he cannot move an inch because his nerves have been completely paralyzed.

Jiraiya lectures to Pein that he went down the wrong path. Jiriaya intended for Nagato to conquer his pain and protect his friends, not use it as a tool to lead to world to ruin. He recalls the Toad Sage’s prophecy about his pupil, and Jiraiya honestly believed that maybe Nagato would be the one to bring peace to the entire world. He doesn’t waste anymore words and stabs all three members of Pein’s team with giant swords in the real world.

Believing Pein to be dead, Jiraiya leaves the scene with the toads who hack and weez because performingthe genjutsu apparently really does a number on their throats. Jiraiya apologizes and informs the toads that he has “finally made his decision.” But before he can anymore, another one of Pein’s bodies suddenly appears behind Jiraiya. He caught Jiraiya completely off guard and, with one swipe, sends Jiraiya crashing through a wall and falling into the water outside. Whatever attack this body of Pein used, it was powerful enough to hack off Jiraiya’s left arm with ease.

Appearing from the hole in the wall, all six of Pein’s bodies have assembled - including the three Jiraiya had just “killed.” Pa thinks Pein must have summoned the other three just before he was caught in the genjutsu. Pein tells Jiraiya to witness the six paths of pain. When Jiraiya asks Pein who he really is, Pein replies that the name applies to all six of them. Jiraiya cannot believe that he is fighting six people with the Rinnegan. Then Jiraiya suddenly realizes something vital, something so crucial, something so important… that we’ll have to wait another week to find out because Kishi loves his cliffhangers.

Wow, what a sudden reversal of situation in one chapter. I had a feeling that Jiraiya wasn’t going to defeat Pein that easily, but I’d never imagined he would receive such a serious injury in Pein’s counter attack. Now with only one arm left, Jiraiya is going to extremely limited in the jutsus he can perform. Unless he can do one handed seals like Haku did, Jiraiya’s going to have to seriously rely on the toads just to survive. He’s probably low on chakra too having had to use so many jutsus up to this point. The toads are also tired out and probably can’t perform their genjutsu again, not to mention that Pein now has seen the genjutsu and knows its weakness.

On top of that, Pein has summoned his remaining three bodies and “magically” healed the other three. I think I can say with almost certainty that Pein’s bodies are some form of reanimated corpses. Like Ma said, there’s no jutsu in the world that can bring a guy back instantly after being stabbed by a giant sword. Now after seeing what Pein can do, I’m starting to see why he was able to defeat Amegakure’s Salamander Hanzo single-handedly. Pein’s team of six is an army by itself, each specializing in a powerful ability and all having the ability to coordinate their attacks flawlessly. Either that or Pein’s trying to assemble his own boy band - which is evil in another way.

This fight is starting to give me flashbacks of Asuma’s fight, specifically the part where he is severed injured while fighting Hidan but had no where to run and was forced to either fight or die. Things are looking very grim for Jiraiya - if he’s been holding back something, now’s the time to use it or it’s certain death. But even if he wins, I wonder if Tsunade has some miracle jutsu to grow back his arm.

Two questions left unanswered:

1. What did Jiraiya mean when he said “I finally made my decision.” I thought his decision was whether or not to kill his former student, but Jiraiya clearly said those words after having killing Pein’s first group. My guess is that it has something to do with Naruto, possibly to do with his Kyuubi Seal.

2. The cliffhanger at the end of this chapter really provides no clues on what Jiraiya is going to say. What has Jiraiya realized about Pein? Some forbidden technique? A connection to the Sage of the Six Paths? Gah! This is going to gnaw away at me this whole week until the next chapter!

Tsunade might not be able to grow back jiraiya’s arm, but if he can find it, maybe she’ll be able to restitch it like Kakuzu did with Deidara. But even if his arm is lost forever, I’m sure he can do one-hand seals- He is The Great Jiraiya after all. Let’s just hope he surves. And also the tall body in the middle kinda reminds me of Kisame.

well….i reckon when he said ‘ive finally made my decision’ he means hes going to let naruto in on the secret of that forbidden jutsu, maybe the nine tailed rasengan or something extra kool like that, but this is getting interesting…i cant see jaraiya surviving though

I would have thought he would be alot more careful walking away from the fight. Doing something like using a close and hiding in the shadow or silhouette. Kakashi would have been more careful. Even though its a low level jutsu, why did he not use a substitution jutsu to get away from the attack? I don’t think his chances are slim. This is one of the Legendary Sannin. I guess we’ll see though.

I think Jiraiya will be fine. You know how certain reptiles or amphibians can regenerate their limbs? Well being the toad sage, I wouldn’t put it past him to be able to do that…

I think a substitution justsu was almost out of the question since the attack happened so incredibly fast. Jiraiya’s chances don’t look too good now. I only hope he survives long enough to exposit what is so significant about Pain’s six bodies.

On another note, am I the only one who thought that the first body Pain switched to was Deidara?

Jiraiya’s out of luck now. He should escape to back to Myouboku Mountain using some kind of reverse summons jutsu.

I think he’ll be okay if he gets away. Tsunade can give him an arm transplant or something, since Rin was able to do an eye transplant for Kakashi, and she wasn’t even an experienced Medic.

So, where or what is the real Nagato?

Do you think he’s hiding out somewhere, controlling the bodies the same way Itachi and Kisame fought Team Gai and Team Kakashi?

Or is Nagato some incorporeal form that can put his chakra into many bodies at once? If so, the only people who can fight him are the Uchias.

Jiraiya can’t die. There’s so much he hasn’t yet taught Naruto. Who else would be his mentor? He’s already surpassed Kakashi in some ways.

soo then, what i want to know i if nagato was a ninja that could make, or break the ninja world is there anyone strong enough to take him? i know jiraiya is sannin and all….but pain is a God he beat hanzou single handedly someone all of jiraiyas team couldnt touch. jiraiya is out of his league

His only option seems to be to make 5 shadow clones and use the jutsu that yondaime and sondaime used to seal away the spirits of the kyuubi and Orochimaru’s arms. I still want Jiraiya to win, but the chances are slimmer then before. Can you guys think of another instance where someone lost their arm in battle besides Deidara. Because Deidara survived after losing his arm by running away! I want to know what happened in the other instances if there were any.

The one that looks like Kisame (kinda) is the one that severed Jiraiya’s arm. The picture shows someone with horns behind him before it happened and the only one with horns is the one that looks like Kisame. I wish that Kishi would give them names! Anyway it does seem that Pein summoned the others right before and then one (or both) of them healed the three that were stabbed while the other attacked Jiraiya.

i was so depressed when i saw his arm was missing rofl. jiraiya is a pimp! but i figure he isnt dead yet, he hasn’t made that fate altering desision the toad sage was babbling about. He’s not just gunna get beat up and them walk away carelessly. PS.. this fight needs to end soon!!!!

I think Jiraiya will grow his arm back like some reptiles do and go on with another battle or Pein is about to kill him. I think when Jiraiya said “I’ve mad my decision” He was about to say he is going to tell naruto everything and teach him the flying thunder god technique. Really I thougt this was going to be the last chapter on this battle cause i am itching to see naruto and sasukes battle or sasuke and itachis battle it doesn’t matter i just want to see them fight.

I’m betting they’ll have a HUGE climax where J-man will find some way to pull off a victory, but they’ll cut to the other side of the story line. Either that or he’s gonna’ run for it. ; p
I wonder if each Pein clone has it/his own Akatsuki ring…? And maybe I’m just imagining things, but don’t all of Pein’s bodies look like a different member of the Akatsuki? From left to right: Deidara, Kisame, Zetsu, Sasori, Orochimaru and Hidan! Just an observation. ;D

Wow i was really impress on Pein’s ability to break the genjutsu that Jariaya put him in it was the most powerful genjutsu i ever seen. Genjutsu,Tiajutsu and Ninjutsu don’t work what is there left, it just makes me wonder what kind of powers do Tobi or Madara have to order Pein around?

The rinnegan is truly turning out to be the strongest eye ability. Now how is Naruto going to beat Pein if he’s this strong? And i believe the God Path hit Jariaya with the strong blow which took his arm off and i think he got all the information he needs on Pein so he needs to flee if he’s able to because he will be killed in htis battle.

If you look carefully, only the original (the first one we see) Pein is wearing the Akatsuki ring for Void. I think that is the real one.

You have a point, Bob, but it seems like he doesn’t exactly have only one official body. The only evidence for the spiky one being Pein is the different styles of piercing and the ring… And that body kinda’ looks like Yahiko… but that’s just conjecture.

When he said that the name ‘Pein’ refers to all six of us, doesn’t it make you think that all of them combined makes his actual body? Maybe he split his body up and distributed his chakra amongst them, it could also be that he split his abilities to all six members also.

You know the ability where a ninja just poofs away in a puff of smoke to get away? Is there anyway to stop that? I mean it just seems that whenever someone like Kabuto or Orochimaru uses that technique, it’s like a definite way to escape, and no one even bothers trying to chase after them.

The rings don’t seem to have any significant meaning. While it is true that Pein has never lost a battle, it’s probably also true that he’s never fought against Tobi/Madara. Pein’s ultimate goal is probably everything to him, he probably wants revenge against the world he lives in for causing him so much pain and taking Yahiko away from him. He doesn’t care what happens or who he has to answer to as long as he accomplishes his goal in life, much like Sasuke. And he probably needs Tobi/Madara in order to accomplish it.

Seriously, the instructions makes the whole world seem to make sense, Echizen.
The thing is, how does somebody, even as powerful as Pein, control six bodies as one conciousness? Maybe it’s like an octopus, where it has seperate mini-brains that attatch to one larger brain. Only Pein’s a Hexsapus… And we can’t really tell where the real brain is…

Sadly, it looks that way. Jiraiya really didn’t think this through, did he? He knew how powerful the rinnegan is… Maybe Tsunade’s got some sort of super-slug-spy keeping tabs on him, or there’s always the off chance that Jiraiya learned the Flying Thunder God ability. ^_^

I don’t know about you guys, but “hermit mode” doesn’t seem to be doing all that much for J-Man other than giving him MA and PA which is a huge boost but technically not hermit mode since he needed their help to achieve hermit mode

Well maybe “hermit mode” is so if he’s fatally hurt he grows back limbs lost and fatal chest injuries in battle, because it’s seem not to be hurting him that much in this battle to have lost his arm. And also why i say that is when he was training Naruto in the 4-tail state look at his chest wounds anyone else to receive a blow like that it would’ve been there death for sure. Just a thought.

I don’t think Naruto will find Sasuke and Itachi in the Uchiha’s secert hide-out because if so it wouldn’t be much of a secert hide-out at all.

I wonder if Madara is actually helping Pein find a vessel for his body to re-unite his powers because his powers were split between the four bodies.

The rings must be a way to locate the other members of the a-team and talk to them telepathically… or else pein can tell what people are thinking. This may be why the kid looked so crazy before and was aware of how much of a pervert Jiriaya was/is. And if he can read minds then there’s no way to surprise him. That’s why the other guys appeared.
I want to say that Itachi won’t convince Sasuke to go along with this elaborate plan…

I think it’s going to go on for a bit longer. TOM seems to not be included in this big battle/chase situation. I want to say there’s at least another 150 chapters until the end.
It will be revealed that Pein is… whatever… tengu or something. Madara will be hanging out on his giant statue for a while…
Madara must have been waiting for the rebirth of the rinnengan in order to try to help the reincarnated spirite of his father again. So I have flip-flopped about my opinion of the importance of Pein.
Thus, as pain awakens the true power of the sharingan, pain has awakened the rinnengan.
why Nagato’s body was destroyed seems to be the real question.

sweet battle. But doesn’t this battle seem somehow hasty? We still don’t know whats the point of the hermit mode, what the hell Pein really is, and what was this decision Jiraiya made. There should be explanations, so i agree this will take a while. Not sure if I’m the only one, but this is getting confusing beyond help.

Regarding Jiraiya - there is no reason to think he will die. He isn’t on a brink of life and death or anything - just with his arm missing. He should be alright, at least for now.

is it possible that the fourth hokage was one of the peins, you know the one that landed and had a zoom in on his ring, and the same hair style

or did pein just revive his body, if thats it does it have something to do with those things in peins face?

I think they’re just running out of ways to draw characters. Just like one of them kind of looks like Deidara but has no resemblance in Jutsus. There’s probably no connections to Pein’s bodies and the living/dead Akatsukis.

Well they always could think of different accents of attire, or crazy shapes to differentiate between the characters. I’m guessing there is a point in the piercings and in the fact that they are kind of alike. We just dont know yet what that might be. Jiraiya seems to understand something at the very end of this chapter - maybe we will know the answers soon.

I think there is something to the fact that the 3 bodies Jiriya “killed” revived themselves immediately. From what we have seen so far, Pein seems to be on almost another plain of being. Meaning that he can manipulate the connection between the mind and body. I think that the 6 bodies are in a sense “possessed” by Pein/Nagato’s being yet his mind and body are not restricted by any of his bodies.

On another note: I don’t think that Naruto will ever be able to control the Kyuubi’s chakra like he did when he first discovered that he had an enormous amount of surplus chakra in his body. That is why Jiriya doesn’t want him ever using the Kyuubi’s chakra at all because its only desire is to overcome Naruto’s mind and body and take control.
I think “the Jutsu” that Jiriya was talking about could be Naruto making a shadow clone of his himself in a tailed form. That could be the only way to rid himself of the Kyuubi’s chakra, slash kick ass, while not allowing it to destroy his own body as it is the case when he reaches a tailed form of the Kyuubi’s chakra.

I agree that they’re running out of different styles and that’s why pein’s crew look like different characters. Their similar looks are probably to just keep us guessing about the 4th.
The piercings appeared in the summons too, which makes me think they’re related.
I found this about piercings
“This ritual was done to draw blood to prepare them for the gods.” This was in reference to the Native Americans, specifically the Aztecs, Mayas, Kwakiutul, and Tlinglit tribes.
Jiraiya definitely has a piece of the puzzle that we haven’t been informed about yet.
I wonder how he lost his body, which has brought him to this lowly state.
OKOKOK… my guess is that Nagato thought he was avatar the last airbender and lept with his glider from the top of the valley of the end. Suddenly, it was revealed that his wind chakra would only tear the glider to pieces… thus… sending the boy falling to his doom. How do you think Nagato died?

It’s Friday or Saterday every week… unless Kishimoto is gathering information. aka looking for other legends and stories to tie into naruto, such as the tengu and chinese constellations and Jiriaya etc.

naruto can’t put the Kyuubi into a shadow clone, because all of the shadow clones including himself are affected… no… I think he NEEDS sasuke who can control the kyuubi to help him achieve this higher level. Sasuke also needs naruto to become stronger as well (like the fire and wind thing). Maybe they could do some sort of Fire-wind-lightning attach that could destroy most anything.

If I were Naruto, I’d make a clone for the Kyuubi to inhabit with his personality and powers and train together. I mean is there anyone better suited to train Naruto than a crazy, power hungry, selfish demon in order to prepare to fight all the enemies that ae popping up. I find it hard to believe that the only times Naruto has had a “heart to heart” with the Kyuubi was when he said he was gonna borrow chakra as a way for the Kyuubi to pay “rent” and when Sasuke supressed the Kyuubi.

Siskin, I agree with you that Sasuke and Naruto are an almost perfect match and I think that the 3rd knew what he was doing when he teamed them up. Its kind of like how Tsunade made Yamoto the Team Leader because he can supress the Kyuubi’s chakra. The 3rd knew the 1st and that he had that ability, and probably knew that Madara Uchiha, and in turn all Uchiha, had the ability to control the Kyuubi as well so really there was no one better to be close to Naruto in case the Kyuubi took over.

I think that once Jiraiya gets back to Konoha or at least meets up with Tsunade ( I personally think he will find a way to get out of this battle breathing because honestly the whole “the Student is now the Master” thing has already been done in the Narutoverse) she will definitely have some insight into who Madara Uchiha is seeing as he was close with not only her grandfather but her great uncle as well.

My guess is that Pein’s bodies are former cadavers of people he deffeated and thought would be useful. Thus healing wouldn’t be needed durring battle, meaning he saves a lot of chakara. Maybe he lost his old body. . .?

I think that the body we mostly see before this fight was Yahiko’s and Nagato took it over when Yahiko was killed so that he could always protect/be close to his friend. I don’t think that they are people he defeated only because that would be too similar to Orochimaru and Hidan’s jutsus. But then again it could make sense that Orochimaru figured out how to make his “immortality” jutsu work through Pein example.

I’m pretty sure the other bodies don’t have rings, which is why I’m guessing the one with the ring is the original. But I also like the idea that Pein is not really in any one body but all of them. Maybe the key in defeating Pein is to kill all six bodies at the same time.

I think Jiraiya’s got a chance, I mean he is the man. And he’s gotta be ridiculously tough to take on the 4-tailed Kyuubi and survive a near fatal blow like the one he took. That missing arm won’t phase him. I bet he’s gonna get mad now and go Super Sayin on Pein’s 6 asses.

Sidenote: Just realized that Jiraiya’s hair looks like a Level 3 Super Sayin… vica vi/ergo he is a total badass and has a whole boat load of tricks up his sleeve.

It would be very fitting if the only way he could escape was to use his invisibility jutsu he uses to spy on the ladies, er, I mean do his research. It would fit with the prophecy of the Elder Toad and would be awesome if that was the weakness of the Rinnigan.
