Naruto Manga chapter 378: One-on-One

Jiraiya knows from the battle so far that he cannot beat Pein’s trio, especially with them sharing three sets of eyes and the chubby guy gulping up all his ninjutsus. Time for plan B: Run Away! Jiraiya buys some time by hiding in the sewers below the city while Pa thinks up of a good plan to counter Pein’s summoned minions. Also, note the first two panels of the chapter showing all three of Pein’s team dangling some kind of black belt or cloth from their right sleeves. Just what is that?
Pa toad gives a good analogy about how Pein’s Rinnegans function. All three of them share each other’s points of view all at once – kind of like a security station with displays from all the cameras in front of you. This is how the three of them can time their attack and defence so perfectly. And unlike the Byakugan, they can cover each other’s blind spots without using any additional chakra. Jiraiya figures he can take each of them on if it’s a one-on-one battle but neither his ninjutsu nor his taijutsu can get through their tag team attacks. Jiraiya has never been much of a genjutsu user and Nagato (Pein), being one of his former students, knows this. So Jiraiya looks to his two toad companions for help.
But Ma toad is really against doing it because their genjutsu style is through sound and it requires she and Pa to sing (croak) together – something Ma is embarrassed to do at her age. However, the fate of the world may depend on it, so they have no choice but to try. The problem is it may take some time to get their voices in the right melody , but the sound will allow Pein to track them down in the pipes. Jiraiya has a plan to buy them some time and they begin preparing.
The toads began singing and the deafening sound rattles the surrounding pipes. Pein recognizes it as genjutsu and traces the sound through the pipes. Pein and the two others charge at Jiraiya and the toads, but a shadow clone of Jiraiya’s, which hid himself in the walls using toad silhouette form, appears from behind and unleashed a giant fireball blast from behind. The fat guy jumps in front of it to absorb the attack, but Jiraiya expected this and now knows that each member of Pein’s team can only use one type of technique. Right now the fat one is blinded by his clone’s fire attack, and the thin one has his eyes closed, meaning that the only one with a clear field of vision is Pein himself.
As Pein and the thin one charge towards him, Jiraiya unleashes a fireball attack himself. Pein and his companion leap up to avoid it, but Jiraiya has set up a jutsu trap in the ceiling and a Swamp of the Underworld consumes then thin guy. Finally, Jiraiya has gotten Pein by himself, and with the toads’ genjutsu almost complete, it looks like the situation has reversed itself.
Jiraiya RUUUUUUUUULLLLLLZZZZ!!
But altough he has the upper hand now, the plot will probably be twisted so that Pein wins.
At the end of the chapter it says the next chapter will be the conclusion of the fight. That’s more than enough time for either of them to win.
Run Jiraiya! I think that is the smartest thing he can do… If he fights Pein longer he will be able to kill some of the bodies, but I think that Pein will beat him, Pein has been holding back for most of the fight it seems. I think he is trying to conserve his chakra. Either way this fight is getting intense! I hope Jiraiya wins! But I also want to see Naruto fight Pein. What are those belt things anyway?
If the next one will conclude the battle then I think that Pein will win. I mean he is the leader of Akutsuki and he was just barely introduced! He was given the command to personally get Naruto, so if he loses then that was a short Naruto life for him.
It just occurred to me that Jiraiya might win. If he kills off these three bodies he might think that he one but Pein will still have three more and Jiraiya will leave with the victory but Pein will still be alive and wanting revenge… its a possibility.
That last one would be the best scenario I think.
I don’t think Jiraiya will lose, at least not die, in the next chapter if it is indeed the conclusion. Look how long Sarutobi’s death took, and I think Jiraiya is a more important character than him.

Quick off topic thing… sorry… I don’t know if this has already been said or not, but I was looking at Itachi’s and Kakashi’s MS eyes and they are different! I found this out on wikipedia under an article called “Sharingan” Maybe this has to do with three MS users unlocking the Uchiha demon… sorry again for going off topic. Were rooting for you Jiraiya!

Shino’s right. Jiraiya should run away now that he has the upper hand. Pein can easily summon 3 more bodies, leaving Jiraiya, ma and pa fighting against new enemies with new jutsus.
I’m not sure that genjistu will work on Pein anyway. Look at when Kurenai tried to put Itachi under genjitsu. He completely turned it around on her.
I’m sure that the Rinnegan is more powerful than Itachi’s or Kakashi’s current level of Mangekyo Sharingan.
Jiraiya has also done some major moves. Does he have enough chakra to fight more of Pein’s bodies?

i dont think jiraya will die, at least not yet. Theres alot he needs to tell naruto about for example his seal and this awesome jutsu and i think he will do it in person
If Jiraiya loses he should at least survive and go back to the leaf to teach naruto some more jutsu so if and when he fights pein he will be ready. Right now Jiraiya is the only one who has seen Peins jutsu and I don’t think Pein is going to let him live to tell the story. Sorta speak!
I think Jiraiya needs to live to tell naruto everything about himself like who his parents are and show him all of his fathers jutsu, i think the jutsu he wants to teach naruto is the teleportation jutsu. The one that gave the fourth his name as the yellow flash. Narutos speed would be awesome.
I think you should update the character stats to let everyone the level of the characters.
I wonder what Naruto’s reaction will be when the frog J-sama sent ahead with the scroll to unlock naruto’s seal reaches Naruto. I am sure he will be alarmed and will come after J-sama. Jiraiya will never die.
@ Namizake. Good point. If Jiraiya dies and that frog reaches Naruto, there’s the risk that the yin and yang Kuubi chakras will be united and completely overwhelm Naruto.

Well i think Jiraiya is going to run out of chakra and ma and pa frog is going to convince Jiraiya to retreat when Pein summons another two guys who would be way stronger than the other two and can do more powerful jutsu’s than those first two did.
i can see now how Pein beat hanzo is to use his summons of other fighters that he control from a distant and make his opponent use all there chakra up and then he goes for the kill. But a guy like Naruto who has an unlimited source of chakra with him using his and the kyuubi’s chakra he can beat Pein ,but he has to get much stronger though. Ican’t see Jiraiya getting killed in this battle the way ma and pa frog talk like they know a great escape jutsuthat will let they not get killed.
ya i im pretty sure that j man gonna help kill off some of peins bodys, go back to konoha, tell naruto and everybody some way stop help them kill pein, naruto cant end yet you know. then when neruto and them eventually got to kil pein theyll kill all of peins bodys untill the originall is left(possibly nagato) but then the uchiha demon will be unleashed by sasuke, tom, itachi and then that demon is maybe rikoudou sennin and it might do somehting to help or kill pein and youse the almighty origanal rinengan and make the fight alot harder for all the ninja but then sand ninja will arrive and help fend ppl off such as tom while the konoha main characters fihgt the demon

there is alot of akatsuki and other bad guys left…im wating for a huge battle to happen with the sasuke and naruto rematch as well a sort of ninja battle royal…that would kick so much ass
jiraiya cannot lose i mean ,trainer of naruto AND his dad THE fourth hokage, theres gotta be something big that will happen! and at the end of the manga it said ‘conclusion of the fight?!’ theres a question mark……i dont think its gunna be over yet
The fight I’m really looking forward to is the one between Kisame and Suigetsu. There is probably gonna’ be one, since it’s supposedly the main reason Suigetsu went with Sasuke. That’ll be intense.
Lovething, about what you said earlier. About Genjutsus not working on Itachi, so it might not work on Pein. From what people have gathered, the sharingan is a mix of the Bayakugan and the Rinnegan. So far the Rinnegan has shown an ability to negate ninjutsus, but not any form of Taijutsu. But the Bayakugan shows an aptitude for countering Taijutsu. Mix them together and you probably create the sharingan’s ability to reverse Genjutsu. What I’m getting at is that the Rinnegan might not be quite as versetile as the sharingan, so Genjutsus still might work. ^_^;;
I wonder if Tsunade would have been worried enough to have Jiraiya followed or if she would have followed him herself. After all she told him she would come if he needed. I think there is alot about Jiraiya that we dont know as well, I think we can expect some more surprises from him in terms of his techniques. Dont count him out. After all he is a sanin of Konoha.
If the legend is true and Pein is the chosen one, what would keep Jiraiya from using the same forbidden jutsu Minato used to seal Kyubi. After all the situation suggest that if Jiraiya falls the faith of the world is sealed.
has anyone seen or heard anything about the new Naruto Shippuuden movie that came out in August? I’d like to know how that ties in with the manga.
hmmm… i think jiraya will die… SORRY!!! i mean if you look at the writer’s point of view. Jiraya would defend Naruto to the death, and we all know he is no pushover, i think we are finally going to see Naruto on his own after jiraya dies and see his full potential, sorry to bring this up but… anyone read harry potter? **SPOILER IF YOU HAVE BEEN A HERMIT FOR A FEW YEARS** j.k. killed of dumbledore so there would be no one between harry and voldermort, maybe this is kind of the same thing…
like maybe he want no one, or anyone strong enough, between Naruto and Pein or the akatsku…. just a theory… hope i am wrong thought
… I think that jiraya is currently the strongest shinobi in konoha right now, so he will probably be killed off eventually so Naruto will become strongest/hokage/whatever…
But if Jiraiya will die,why then he wouldnt summon the God of death to Steal Pein’s soul? Remember when Sarutobi was mortally injured he did this in attempt to kill Orochimaru.

Nef that’s why i really think that the Sharingan is the strongest once full developed, because the weaknesses of the Rinnegan. Would have no affect on a Sharingan user and the Bayakugan the same that’s why Madara father reckonize the same thing that if the 2 eyes was combined it would be the strongest eye so that’s why he had Madara to take his body when he was old enough to handle a soul transfer jutsu, but Madara escaped his father.

That’s a possibility, since both Sarutobi and Minato knew this technique, I’m sure Jiraiya picked it up too. But at this point in the battle, I don’t think Jiraiya would resort to a suicide technique just yet. And it doesn’t appear that Jiraiya is ashamed of running away either, so I think he’ll survive this encounter.

Jiraiya also has tons more “research” to do (and I don’t mean jutsu research) to die just yet. There are so many more hot springs and bath houses to “visit”. And if he does die, would Naruto have to take on the legacy of his ero-books?
hrm… i reli dont think J-sama is going to die here because we hve a stronger enemy awaiting for them “Madara”. so he would probaby take on Pein or maybe escape then go teach Naruto new jutsu or somtin that he can take on Pein later on. At this point, Madara is the one giving order to Pein so im thinking this is the tim for Pein to die and then ther would be more chances to reveal about the new leader or strongest enemy “Madara”. so yea thats wat i think and also i hope that naruto has some sort of bloodline. Dam that would be awesome

The shinigami technique takes the soul out of a body, but which body of Pein’s would Jiraiya use it on. If you pull the soul out of one, it might pull the soul out of all of them.. It might not.. He could use Kage Bunshins, but Pein still has three bodies left. Perhaps in the next episode he’ll summon more bodies right before the genjutsu is completed. His original body would definitely be his last resort, as it probably has the ability to use the Rinnegan’s ‘true’ powers.

Kakashi seems more like the reader-only type, he’s too lazy outside of battles to do write a book. The Sharingan may be of some use for peeping– er.. research, but I think the Byakugan would work even better. Hmmm… I wonder if that’s how Neji honed his skills

Here’s a question: when you create shadow clones, you split your chakra amongst your clones, but do you also split your soul amongst them as well (or rather copied amongst them)?

Wouldn’t somebody splitting up pieces of their soul weaken them? The creator of the clones probably leaves a specific thumb-print in each of their clones with their chakara, but it’d be suicide to chop their soul into dozens of tiny pieces.

True. There’s odds that Pein will never be killed. Not if he can continuously jump from body to body.
Maybe Pein’s original body is controlling all of the other bodies, and if you kill his original body then he’ll die. Sort of like a vampire ninja! Also, Jiraiya said that all of the bodies have a unique ability, maybe I missed it but did the thinner guy show any special abilities yet? Is he just fast? That doesn’t seem too special.
Nope, the thin guy hasn’t landed a single blow on J-sama thus far, I don’t know why Pein even bothered with him, the chubby guy’s technique is much more useful. And Peinn should start giving his summons name tags, I’m tired of saying ‘fat guy’, ‘thin guy’.

Yeah Jiraiya probably won’t die in this fight. Unlike Granny Chiyo and the Third, Jiraiya actually has a great purpose in the story. What with the whole ‘Fate of the world’ thing and all.

I think Jiraiya is not worried about being killed by Pein, because as long as he got ma and pa toad is there on his shoulders they can use a escape jutsu to get out of harms way. So Jiraiya is just seeing if he can defeat “hell path”or hell body that Pein is using to try an defeat Jiraiya by using killer massive summoning techniques of all sorts. This reminds me of the battle Sakura had with Sasori it took them like forever to get down to the real Sasori body so why would Pein be any different. Just a thought?
Well… Pein got 6 bodies and im not sure if all the bodies r made for battle so i think he got a body for a special purpose, like he said before that he has to kill his own former teach, J-sama because he is on his counter (fightin) body so im not sure if he can use all 6 bodies to fight J-sama. so J-sama has to get rid of the summon and he is left wit Pein’s real body. lol thats wat i reckon
I do think Jiraiya is going to win. He is one of the central characters in the manga, and still has several plot lines to resolve.
Pein might still survive, though. Akatsuki would splinter without him. And remember, just because a shinobi is defeated doesn’t mean he will die. Oorochimaru got beaten by The Fourth, Tsunade, and (kinda) Naruto before being killed.
so if j-sama lives, he had better show naruto some new moves cause naruto is looking like he sucks.
i wonder when we will be going back to naruto, i had truly expected kishi to put us on hold with the j-sama pien fight but i was wrong.
The Naruto series doesn’t switch between stories until the fight is almost over, maybe for a few scenes but that’s it. A lot of people seem to think that Tsunade will come but I don’t see any good in that. I mean if Jiraiya loses, she really doesn’t stand a chance against Pein. She could try to heal or Jiraiya or escape but I doubt Pein will just stand by and watch.
I think that Tsunade, being a Sannin, has plenty of moves that we don’t know of… She could probably take on a couple of Pein’s bodies… I’m rooting for Jiraiya just like all of you, but I think that since the next episode is the last of the battle he will either lose or get his genjustu off and kill off the remaining body and think that he has won

Did anyone notice that Ma and Pa are stuck to Jiriaya’s shoulder? I think he said soemthing about how if they hop of his shoulders then they will go back to where they came from. So pein just has to knock them off.
And of course Jiriaya’s not going to use the shinigami… I wonder if he even knows how to do it. I think it was something the 4th taught the 3rd and not handed down by the 3rd to jiriaya to Minato.
I think pein fills the role of villian like the characters from the sound during the Chunin exam. He isn’t the main villian, so he’s expendible. He isn’t the destined child. He’s kind of an awkward character that just kinda appeared as a red herrine for Minato because I think everyone thought (well I did anyway) Yahiko was going to be Minato. And Now Nagato makes everyone think he’s the destined child. It doesn’t seem to fit into the main story arc…

ANYWAY… Has anyone thought about Kakuzu’s relationship with the 1st or possibly his relationship with Madara. He considered himself the treasurer of Akatsuki… which makes you think he was the founding member. I think the 1st beat Madara but Kakuzu was able escape with madara… maybe? What do you think their relationship was in terms of the Naruverse repeating itself and how things led up til now?
Yeah Tsunade is a Sannin but I highly doubt that she’s stronger than Jiraiya. Jiraiya is definitely the strongest of the Sannin.

That was when they were little, and most likely Jiraiya was not fighting back. The Sannins mirror Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke.

All of the teams in Naruto are all rather redundant. It’s always the came combination! One loud-mouth, one girl and an emo guy! What would happen if they mixed up people from the teams?
I like the picture… and I agree that Orochimaru was the strongest. I wonder what his relationship with Madara was like. I believe that Orochimaru was inspired by Madara to do the soul transfer jutsu.
If they mixed up the teams… then two out of the three teams would be quiet and there would be nothing going on… so then we’d focus all our attention on 3 loud mouths, which would get boring fast. The setup allows some shy people to be paired with outgoing ninja so then we can see more of their personalities.
Well the contrast is the whole theme and the different personalities learning to work as a cohesive unit. It’d just be nice to have different character personalities in the teams…
Haha, I never really thought of it like that. So the emo guys on each team are Sasuke, Neji, Shino and Shikamaru. Loud ones being Naruto, Lee, Kiba and Ino. And the quiet ones beings Sakura, Tenten, Hinata and Choji. I’d like to see a pair up of teams based on these types. I’d bet the loud team will be so dysfunctional that they won’t be able to complete any missions.

Orochimaru might have been the strongest back then but that’s not necessarily the case now. Think about it, Orochimaru is afraid of Itachi and Itachi is intimidated (kind of) of Jiraiya. Look what happened with the Sannin is almost identical to what happened to team seven. Naruto and Jiraiya started out as jokes, Sasuke and Orochimaru started out as geniuses. We all know that Naruto will eventually surpass Sasuke.
Ehh let’s not talk about who’s stronger between Jiraiya and Orochimaru anymore. We’ll never know I suppose as the outcomes of the battles in Naruto aren’t measured by how strong someone is.
Everybody knows Jiraya’s chi surpasses 5,000 and Orochimaru’s above 10,000.
The only difference is that Jiraiya knows how to use the Kaio Ken
hi this is my first time posting. i was just wondering about wut u said nafarious about the team set up, a loud mouth, a girl and an emo guy. i was rly thinking about shikamarus team. i dont rly think his team fits under the categorys as much. bobs idea was pretty good but nafarious dint say quiet…he said a girl, so choji duznt fit there. i kinda think that ino can fit under all 3 of these categorys seeing thats shes a loud mouth, a girl, and shes pretty hyper…
Chouji can be a loud mouth… That way it would fit. Notice though that the emo ones are always the better ones and the loud mouths usually try harder than the emo ones. “Yes I am emo, just leave me alone with my bugs… they can keep me company”…lol
chouji is only a loud mouth when someone cals him a fatass
I don’t think J-sama will die. He and Kakashi seem to be the 2 smartest ninja in the Naruverse. They never seem to put themselves in situations that they can’t handle to an extent.
As far as the 3 man cells go, I guess you can say the the set up is equal. There are differences though. Shino and Shikamaru are smarter in battle than Sasuke and Neji. Shino and Shikamaru will basically treat each battle as Chess or Shogi. There will be many well calculated moves, and they will already have multiple plans in all situations. Neji has a near over-confident cockiness to him. Thanks to his Kekkei Genkai, he should. If he fights anyone thats not an intellectual opponent, he’ll crush them. Sasuke is cocky too. As with Neji, it comes with the inheritance of his Kekkei Genkai. I think it would be a very interesting battle if he and Neji faced off.
Loudmouths – Naruto, Ino, Kiba. I don’t see Lee or TenTen as loudmouth. Kiba is pretty much an animal… so he’s loud and wild. Ino is useless up until now, and is by far the weakest of all Kunoichi. We all know Naruto, so I won’t explain him..lol.
I think the last character is the one that doubted themselves, but turned out to be standouts. Ino fits into this category, as she now studies under Tsunade. Choji, Hinata, and Lee also fall under this category. They are the 3 most underrated characters in the storyline, but have shown that they can get the job done when needed.

The whole tengu blood would most likely come from the rinnegan. After all, the sage of the six paths, or whatever, appears to be a furry (meaning he/she/it has animal features) and was the first user of the rinnegan. If the sage was a demon and mixed with a human bayakugan user, that would have been the start to the Sharingan, right?
I think that’s what I’m leaning towards. The theory as stated above seems to have a number of good points, but I think there are a number of details that are a little off. Especially the relationships and the relationship to the rinnengan.
Anyone noticed dat Tobi and Obito use the same letters? The only difference is that Tobi used one less O
i read somewhere that obito is how tobi is spelled backwards in japanese but i havent been able to confirm that
I Don’t think Tobi is Madara When he says he will have Madara’s power i think he means the power that Madara had when he controlled the ninetales, there’s no reason why he couldn’t controll the lesser deomons

Well John where the manga’s show a complete close up of Tobi he had both eyes. But that was a interesting point of view i never thought about it like that.
Scrubby: When did they say that Sasuke is going to be the strongest Sharingan user. I remember one time Sasuke saying that he was only average compared to other Uchihas but since he’s the only one left everyone thinks he’s a genius.
I think the idea mention’d before that the Sharingan is the product of a Rinnigan user and a Byakugan user’s getting busy is pretty good. But I am curious to see the extent of the Rinnigan’s abilities because if it is indeed more powerful than the Sharingan and the Byakugan it must be pretty badass.
I was thinking that the Byakugan gives you a major advantage in offensive Taijutsu and I guess defending against Genjutsu is some ways. And the Sharingan gives the user advantages in Taijutsu, Ninjutsu, and Genjutsu both offensively and defensively. If the Rinnigan is more powerful than them both I wonder just how badass it is and how it helps. We already know that it helps with “line-of-sight” for Taijutsu but that is really only defending against it. And being able to inhabit multiple bodies helps with all jutsus offensively. WHAT ELSE DOES IT DO????
I’m hoping to any form of God that the rinnegan doesn’t do too much more than it already has shown us. It’s a VERY “god-mod” kind of ability. It allows clones, a crazy amount of summons and use of all six elements. It may be a “godly” technique, but makes for a rather predictable fight. -_-
I’m wondering just how powerful Ma and Pa’s Genjustsu are. They’re pretty confident so I’m guessing it’s an extremely high level one.

A-Ha! I got it! Rember the discussion in an erlier blog about what jutsus Naruto had learned, and the jutsu that Jiraiya had forbidden him to use. What if that justsu is the Rasengan, but with the Kyuubi’s chakra? Naruto’s Rasengan has always been blue from his own chakra, but by using Kyuubi’s chakra it would probably black+red and extremely powerful!
That’s just a theory of course.
I just had a thought: maybe Pein runs away, after Jiryaia kills some of his bodies. I hope this happens as Jiryaia’s my favourite character.
“Shikamaru” well it’s a known fact that many villians like Orch. said that Sasuke eyes are more kender that Itachi’s when he fought Sasuke in the forrest of death. And when Sasuke entered into Naruto mind and met kyuubi even Kyuubi said that his eyes was more sinster than his that only Madara the orignal Sharingan user was able to see him inside a person like he did, and gave Sasuke credit for being as young as he is with the abilities he posses and maybe he inherited a stronger tengu’s bloodline than Itachi and Madara that’s why i think Sasuke will the greatest Sharingan user. Now i might be wrong but i’ll take any open theory that can prove me wrong?
I wonder if Naruto’s Kyubi chakra would be inherited by his children. Will it become a Kekkai Genkai (Advanced Bloodline, Bloodline Limit) or would it die with him. I would love to see Kyubi chakra mixed with Byakugan (Byakubi). what do you think Bob?

What else could there be? Sakryuubi? Kyuubino? They’re just not as catchy. But I dunno’ if the kyuubi’s chakara has affected Naruto at a genetic level. I think it’s spirit and chakara are stuck in Naruto, for lack of a better description.
if that IS the “blood line” that naruto has and is passed to mini narutos, its not as cool as the rest of the blood lines out there. i mean yes they will have a vast amount of chackra but compared to other blood lines it just doesnt seem as cool.
i still say naruto has something that will get him up to par with these new bad guys. i mean if by chance naruto defeats pien, he wont be as fortunate with TOM cause we have seen that naruto sucks when it comes to fighting the sharingan. he has lost all his fights with sharingan users so something needs to happen in narutos favor…

Naruto needs to learn the body flicker, which will most likely happen as he is slowly learning all of the abilities his father had. Body flicker + Fuuton Rasenshuriken = dead enemies. Also about Sasuke’s trump card technique.. I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this yet but the seal he made before Orochimaru stopped him from using it was a tiger seal, which means it’s a fire jutsu, so I guess he does possess something at the same level as Naruto’s new technique.
What if Naruto discovers his father’s super-specail-awesome-telaproting-Kunai ability? With the Fuuton Rasenshuriken, even Pein couldn’t stop that kind of assult.

I think that Sasuke now knows about the chakra elements so he knows that lightning is week against wind and fire is strong against it. Thats probably why he was about to use the fire ability instead of chidori. I think that Naruto will have to learn the body flicker in order to succeed against Sasuke. I do hope he learns it and that he has a bunch of the toad abilities! I wonder if Naruto knows about his parents… I wonder when he was/ will be told.

It sucks that there is so much Naruto doesn’t know. But i guess things are revealed gradually to him for a good reason. He is still very immature, and extremely impulsive. On the upside he learns fast. I recall in episode one when he is tricked into stealing the scroll of jutsus, he was sitting and reading it. A little time after he performed the Kage bushin no jutsu and kicked the crap out of Mizuki. The other time Mizuki was beaten again by naruto’s Rasengan.
