Naruto Manga chapter 377 - Hermit Mode

So after our little drought last week (no manga or anime!), we finally get back to Jiraiya and Pein’s fight. And to make up for it, Kishi has given us the gift of COLOR! Rejoice!

To counter Jiriaya’s Hermit Mode, Pein has summoned two more “Akatsuki members.” I put that in quotation marks because although they’re in Akatsuki garbs, they seem to be completely under Pein’s control - as far I know, they could be just reanimated dead bodies. I’m assuming they were summoned from that secret chamber of Pein’s, so the count is four now for the number of bodies Pein has used. And there’s only two out of the six left which haven’t been revealed yet.

Predictably, the new guys have similar piercings as Pein’s other bodies. They also wear Hidden Rain missing nin head protectors, share the same Rinnegan eyes and even have the same bright orange hair (thanks to the wonders of colored manga). That last one seems a little weird to me - is orange hair a side effect of being controlled by Pein’s Rinnegan? Or maybe Pein’s having everybody dye their hair the same color because he wants to start a boy band or something, LOL.

Anyways, neither of Pein’s new summons speak a word, so I’m gonna refer to them as the ’skinny guy’ and the ‘fat guy’. The skinny guy is incredibly fast, but not fast enough for Hermit Mode apparently as Jiraiya stops his first charge with a swift kick to the head. Jiraiya, Ma and Pa then do a combo attack aptly named Hermit’s Art: Deep Fryer by combining oil and fire jutsus. But the fat guy jumps right in front and consumes the entire attack. It’s not clear how he does this, as one second the flaming oil was there and the next it was completely vanished. My guess is that the fat guy is using some type of dimensional rift control jutsu or possibly the sixth chakra element Void that J-sama had mentioned in the previous blog post. If that’s the case, then Void would be an really interesting ability. The name implies “nothing” or “emptiness”, could it be that Void is a lack of chakra or possibly the anti-chakra? Could it be that it essentially cancels out chakra and hence can cancel out any type of ninjutsu?

After the Deep Fryer jutsu got canceled, Jiraiya decides to figure out the new guys’ abilities through close combat. He appears to transform more into toad form as his feet and hands become more toad-like. Jiriaya uses an attack called Ultimate Rasengan which is really just an enormous Spiraling Sphere of chakra, but the speed at which Jiraiya generated it was almost instantaneous. But despite the huge amount of chakra that must have been involved in that last attack, the fat guy manages to completely absorb it as well.

The skinny guy takes the opportunity to attack Jiraiya from behind, but Pa toad throws up a smoke bomb to allow Jiraiya to turn the tables and get behind him instead. But despite zero visibility, the skinny guy was able to completely block Jiraiya’s Hermit Mode punch without even looking. Jiraiya then goes after Pein himself and attacks from behind with Hermit Art: Hair Needle Barrage. But even though the Hair Needle Barrage is Jiraiy’s fastest attack with the widest range, Pein was able to summon a giant panda to completely block it.

Jiraiya is confounded by this because Pein did not move or look in his direction during the needle barrage. Even if all three of them were chakra sensing ninjas, there’s no way for them to block Jiraiya’s high speed attacks so efficiently without even glancing in the right direction. But Pa noticed something important. Even though the target they were attacking was not looking, the other two member’s of Pein’s team were starring intently during the entire process. So it may be that all three of them are linked in some way in order to perfectly coordinate their attacks and be able to perfectly dodge Jiraiya’s attacks because they can see it coming from three different angles.

This battle is looking better and better because even in Hermit Mode, Jiraiya’s attacks are still being completely countered by Pein. The Rinnegan appears to let Pein control his various summons simultaneously. With an ability this powerful, Pein can potentially control an entire army remotely; so in essence, he is truly an army of one. The fat guy’s ability to absorb attacks also interests me, it’s possibly the ultimate defense against ninjutsu. Also notice that throughout this battle, neither Pein nor his summons used any type of ninjutsu. This new body of Pein’s seems to only to rely on summons to fight for him; to the point where he doesn’t even bother to dodge Jiraiya’s attack, but uses a summon to block it instead. Jiraiya’s in for one tough fight and the ability for Pein to share line of sight between his summons could be a real nuisance. My guess is that Jiraiya will need to use at least two shadow clones of himself to help fight Pein and the other two so each is too preoccupied to help the others. But then again, shadow clone divides chakra equally amongst all the bodies, so Jiraiya would be making himself weaker. Will a shadow clone be enough to defeat the legendary Rinnegan?

This a good battle but i think Jiraiya is checking out Peins abilities and how strong he got from the last time he trained him so he knows how to train Naruto to defeat Pein because he won’t be able to beat by himself because the only way to depeat Pein summons is to be able to fight all of them at one time using all your special abilities to beat him. Don’t get me wrong i think at one time Jiraiya could’ve beat him but with old age playing apart in his decreasing in speed he will not depeat Pein but the old man will give him a run for his money though.

I don’t think Sasuke is going to meet Itachi but will be greeted by Madara instead to show him the true powers of the Sharingan techniqes so he can get stronger like his brother.

The smart thing for the writer to do is jump over to a different part of the story right when the battle hits the climax. So it COULD actually mean the fight takes two months before the fight it actually over. ^_^;;
It seems there’s an obvious solution to J-man’s problem. Pein isn’t the only one with three sets of eyes. Ma and Pa are still with J-dizzle and should each keep their attention on a seperate Pein clone. Or would Pein just summon more extra back-up-bodies?

Exactly Ms.Nef, but Pa & Ma may have to detach themselves from Jiraiya’s shoulders first….or maybe it is a pre-requisite to the Hermit Mode, so they can’t…or maybe not…:D

Hey Mr. J-sama, I am thinking that if Pein’s one of the big bosses in the plot, it could be a long fight…and I think Kishi will shift to Naruto & Sasuke scene…that would be nice since I can’t wait to know Itachi’s real motives.

Im not utterly convinced about jiraiyas new form, this fight is heating up and he is still notpulling out any really kool justus with unbelievable awesome-ness, i dont think he has truly finished his transformation, i think when he was knocked into the wall he rushed, and eventually Ma and a will split from him and they will each fight 1 ‘Pein’

About Ma and Pa splitting off from the J-man, I think I saw some seals on Jiriaya’s shoulders. So I think they may be stuck there.

Also, about the longest fight in naruto history, I want to say there’s been a few long battles, and this one probably doesn’t compare just yet. Every epic battle seems to contain flashbacks to put it in context and I guess it depends if you want to count that in it… I still feel like the 3rd vs. Orochimaru was ridiculously long, although I watched the anime and didn’t read the manga (you guys won’t old that against me right?).

and why couldn’t the 6th thing be summoning? Why does it have to be void? eh… I’ll take my comments off the air.

I want to say Nagato is still alive or else the person with the rinnengan would be invincible. But maybe that’s part of it… JIRIAYA! LOVE HIM DON”T FIGHT HIM! but that would be boring to watch

You know what? If the last element really might be void.. Granny Chiyo’s puppets used a technique that sucked a bunch of Sasori’s puppets in. And maybe Kakashi’s Mangekyou sharingan’s technique belongs in the void element category too.

Yeah yeah… and each Mangekyou sharingan is a super version of a single element. Itachi’s eyes are fire and void which is why he can stop time. Kakashi’s element is void which is why he can turn on a vaccuum cleaner and such and he only has one eye so that’s all he gets. Remember when Haku was talking about the function of the two different eyes? Well I kinda think that applies to all sharingan users. The peircing eye and the hypnotic eye… except the peircing is fire and the hypnotic is void. So if TOM can shoot black flames out of his eye then it might be evidence that it’s the other half of Kakashi’s sharingan.
Someone also said something about needing 3 MS users which makes me think that it would consist of 6 eyes in theory and each eye would be needed to control each of the elements. I guess that’s a little off topic from Hermit mode though aye? How about slug mode? Everyone else gets to look like their animals, although slug mode seems like it wouldn’t be too appealing… not to tsunade anyways.

Gaara won’t be in there, he’s not that important of a character as Sakura and Kakashi. Plus it would make more sense if the final battle was the orginal Team 7 with Sai versus Uchiha Madara and the nine tails or something.

Siskin… The piercing eye and hypnotic were figuratively speaking. Those abilities aren’t split between both eyes. In the 2nd naruto movie (Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow), Kakashi used his Sharingan to put a woman to sleep. He used the “piercing” and “hypnotic” abilities of the Sharingan vs. Zabuza. I don’t think that the Sharingan’s abilities have much to do with a persons chakra element.

So, everyone that has died in Naruto has had a particular reason for dying. Basically, they had to die so that the plot can continue. What would be the true benefit of killing off Jiraiya now? The only one we can seem to come up with is that it would make Naruto go crazy. Also, it would make Tsunade go crazy. Like I said before though, it seems as if they are in no rush to kill off the Sannin completely. For those who have been following, Orochimaru is still alive because his cells are taking over Kabuto’s body. There has to be a way for Jiraiya to inform others of Pein’s abilities. I think that they should have Pein fight against the Byakugan and Sharingan at the same time.

I think the sharingan is actually the product of the rinnengan and the byakugon. That’s why it has the peircing (byakugon trait) and the hypnotic (rinnengan trait). This is because pein takes over other bodies by forcing his chakra into them such as how the sharingan users hypnotize their oponnents by forcing their chakra into them. SOO… It’s my theory that Madara is the son of the sage and a hyuga.

And… I don’t want to believe that Kishimoto would just keep introducing villians that are more powerful… I want the story to come to an end eventually. The nine-tail fox wasn’t enough of a villian? and orochimaru? we need to have someone pulling the strings from behind the scene? So… I just convinced myself that everyone is right about itachi.

Yeah I think that the nine tails and Uchiha Madara are basically the strongest villains. I mean the story started out saying how strong the nine-tails is and yet Uchiha Madara summoned it. Perhaps this ‘Tengu’ and the sage are one and the same minus the gigantic nose.

Jiraiya seems to have to “cannon-fodder” pasted on his forehead right now and it might end up being true. Look at his situation. I mean, even IF he wins, look at where he IS. He doesn’t exactly have a home-field advantage here.
Also, with the “void” theory, there’s too many possible plot-holes that can come from that kind of ability. It would probably be better if they stuck to the fail-safe Light and Dark scenario.
Finally: What’s up with you George? Clouds didn’t do anything wrong or say anything offensive, so just chill.

I don’t think Naruto and his bunch of clowns will find Sasuke, if they do all that would happen is that they would just get beat up as usaul so that’s not a good thang for Naruto to re-live the last time he fought Sasuke and got his ass kicked.As for this sixth element i agree “void”can’t be it like E.R.Nef said it leaves too many variables to wide open. But I’ll help u guy and gals figure it out let me go do some research.

I think that Naruto and his bunch will catch up to Sasuke but will have to take on Sasuke’s bunch, aka Snake. Thats gonna be a good battle if it goes down. everyone else will probably fight Snake while Naruto and Sakura go in to get Sasuke. — Thats just what I think will go down and it seems inevitable.

I doubt it would take 6 ninjas to take on Suigetsu, Karin, and Juugo, especially with Kakashi and Yamato in there. It’ll probably be Sai, Hinata, Kiba and Shino versus Hebi. While Yamato, Kakashi Naruto and Sakura go in and take on Sasuke while trying to capture Itachi.

After alll Jiriya is the teacher of to whom he is dealing with in this fight… What intrigue me most is that about the true power of the rinnegan. I think for some reason as a distined child, may be Pien possesses the greatest power of all except for the kyubi and uchiha madara which still became unclear in the field of their limitations…

Well i think that either Kakashi or Yamato will have to stay to take the Snake team. Most probably Kakashi, since Yamato can control Naruto’s transformations. However, when they reach Itachi and Sasuke the battle will be much different than anything else - three groups will be fighting each other simultaneously. Which I highly doubt - it would be very confusing if they just fight everyone against everyone. So maybe there won’t be a fight at all - maybe its time for Madara to step in or smth. If Sasuke and Itachi decide to kill off the intruders first - Naruto and whoever else with him will be dead in a matter of seconds. Thats why they might re-consider and allow Kakashi to go with Naruto and Yamato to stay fighting the Snake. Maybe this is the point when Naruto learns to fully control Kyuubi’s chakra, having no other option, since Yamato wont be there. From Jiraiya’s fight with Pein and what he told to the scroll frog - time comes for some bad ass battles. It would make sense for Naruto to start getting really serious.

And regarding Jiraiyas battle - its portrayed in such a way that no one has a chance to win against Rinnegan. Only someone as stubborn and crazy like Naruto seems to have a chance. For which of course, he needs to be able to use Kyuubi to the fullest. I think that Jiraiya has no chance winning, but he can’t die either - he needs to tell Naruto and the rest of the situation and prepare them to meet Pein, since he is coming to Naruto now, as ordered by Tobi, anyways. If Jiraiya dies - Naruto dies, so it can’t work. I bet Jiraiya gets out of the battle but very severely injured, unable to perform Ninjitsu or smth else - and then performs an act of sacrifice fighting in some last battle with clear understanding that he will die, but for a greater reason - like giving time for Naruto or smth. I highly doubt that this difficult decision mentioned by the Toad Sage is Jiraiyas decision to kill Pein - the decision was made in a really casual way, too casual I would say. Which is one other reason he can’t die. There is another time where he will make the difficult decision, maybe not to peek at nude girls but teach Naruto some bad ass stuff instead

Can Jiraiya still summon in Hermit Mode? Summoning would probably solve the multiple enemies issue, and since hermit mode supposedly can manage vast amounts of chakara, so he could probably summon something huge if it could work.
Seriously. Is it just me, or does Hermit mode seem to be kinda’ crappy, so far? It could be that Pein’s just awesome, but it’s still kinda disappointing.

lol i was thinking and hve this feeling that maybe Pein was the one who summoned the Kyuubi. As J-sama stated that it might be Madara who summoned the Kyuubi but at that tim he wasnt sure that Pein would be so strong and advanced with his Rinnegan enough to summon it. im kinda thinking he probably summon to get rid of some awesome ninjas lik the Fourth Kage so it would be easier for his mission to succeed.

About the spliting up of team snake and the group from konoha… one of the possibilities you talked about was that Yamoto would be needed to control the Kyuubi, but the Uchihas are also able to control it’s power. That’s why Naruto really needs Sasuke. He’s chasing Sasuke for a lot of other reasons, but I believe why the 3rd stacked the deck for team 7 with two sharingan users is because in theory sasuke would be able to help naruto grow and control his power.

The fourth hokage was defending the village and wasn’t engaged in a battle when the Kyuubi appeared.

And if Pein had summoned the kyuubi then the kyuubi would have had a bunch of crazy black things sticking out of it. So I really doubt he had something to do with that.
I wonder though if Madara summoned the rinnengan(or avatar the last airbender, take your pick).

I think Jiraiya can summoning because when Kakashi fought Zabuza he summoned a bunch of dogs so you can summon more than one animal.
I don’t think he will be because all the other frogs are less powerful and would get in the way.
Gamabunta may not be useful because he’s too old or because he’s too big and slow. These big toads seem to be good against other summons but not so good against little people. The other summons we’ve seen were toads used for defense and also the belly of the mountain toad, which I believe isn’t a toad like Gamabunta but is more of just the living mountain the toads reside on.

Here’s a thought off topic. Someone mentioned it before about gamakichi or whatever the little toad’s name was that naruto kept summoning, But I think when you sign on to being a toad summoner you get your own personal toad. And they may grow in relation to the summoners chakra… that’s just a thought. Because Orochimaru had his own personal snake and Jiraiya seems to be paired with Gamabunta even in the flashbacks.

From the looks of things, the Toad a person learns to summon can either be obtained, like Jiraiya’s summons (from what we know) or it could be inherited, like Naruto’s giant toad summon. I don’t know crap about summons, so I could easilly be wrong. xD

i do think that somehow or someway Madara help Pein to become a full “Sage” earlier than he was progressing at the time they they met eachother because there is a large gap after Jiraiya training Pein until Akatsuki was created so someone who was old enough to know the power of a “Renningan” and to be able to train him would be Madara. Now what Madara’s getting out the deal i can’t figure it out yet but it got to be something big i bet.

That’s certainly an interesting idea. Perhaps Minato was growing too fast and Madara recognized him as a potential threat to his future plans. So he summoned the Kyuubi in order to force Minato to sacrifice himself to save the village. But Minato knew of Madara’s intentions but also knew he was still not strong enough to defeat him, so he used Kyuubi against Madara by sealing its powers inside his own son, leaving it to Naruto to continue the fight.

But using the Kyuubi to fight one of the best shinobi in existence is such a terrible idea! The Kyuubi would easily be the most difficult creature to capture, so why would somebody put such a valuable commodity in jeopardy?
Wouldn’t it make more sense that Madara decided to throw his fit upon Konohagakure (the representation of the first hokage, who kicked his arse) after over 100 years of regaining his former power?

I don’t know, I don’t think Madara wishes to utterly destroy Konoha. I think the original battle between him and the First was for control over the village. Even though Madara may hold a grudge against the First, he hasn’t given up on obtaining his prize yet.

I don’t think it was over the village but I do think it was because Madara’s intensions were to take over the world or something similar to Pein’s plans. There seems to be a repeating story line about a teacher student dynamic such as Sarutobi and Orochimaru, Jiriaya and Pein, Kakashi and Sasuke etc. For some reason I think we can extend this situation back to the sage who I’m guessing taught the 1st and Madara (who I believe is his son). So in each of those situations there is a rivalry with another student (in Pein’s case I think it was Yahiko).
So if the sage could have lived forever by forcing the eye technique on someone else… why didn’t he? I think it’s because he was placed in a situation with Madara who ended up killing him not because he was stronger but because the sage let him. The 1st went to stop Madara and they had their battle, which resulted in the first becoming the head of the village and eventually becoming hokage.

hey i started thinking, if naruto doesnt get a bloodline what if kakashi in a dying wish (thats if kakashi dies) gives his sharingan to naruto as a gift. that could solve the problem of him controling the kyuubi. and he would get stronger and able to compete with these crazy new enemies showing up.

we don’t know if naruto doesn’t have the bloodline ability! He might have one - but its hard to reveal through all this Kyuubi chakra.
Actually, there are theories around that Pein and Naruto are related through family and that Naruto might have a Rinnegan as well. There thoughts are mainly based on the fact that Naruto mother was red-haired, as Pein and all his clones and comes from the similar region.
It would be damn cool for Naruto to discover bloodline ability and as something as cool as Rinnegan.
