I agree Itachi’s bond with his father was not to good at the time but to murder his mother made no sense or even his father for that matter.

Ok, I am a big fan of the bad guys turning out to not be so bad after all. Sesshomaru, Gaara, Snape…. all of them are my favorite characters for their show/movie. Add to that I have always loved them since first introduced in their respective shows, and have known they would not be all bad. I got the same feeling about Itachi from the very beginning. I have been waiting all this time to see his goodness come out.
Ok, someone mentioned the Akatsuki’s initiations as being the reason Itachi killed everyone. However, I do not think that is the case. After all, Deidara did not come to them. They recruited him. He couldn’t even beat Itachi after all, yet he was still a valued member of their organization.
I agree completely that Itachi did not kill his entire clan. If that was a measure of his worth then why didn’t he just kill all of the Akatsuki to prove his worth as well? After all, he could easily overcome Diedara and Orichimaru. They both said as much.
I agree that there was a lot of mind control going on and Sasuke just showed up at the wrong time. I believe Itachi was protecting him when he told him he had done it and to hate him and come after him. By making him hate him, he was insuring that Sasuke would become strong instead of spending his life in sorrow and not focusing on his training, like someone else said.
This way he becomes a strong ninja. I also think he DID have something to do with it all, though. There is no way he can be completely innocent. I think, though, to keep in good regard with the organization he has to be ruthless at times. He might not be completely being controlled, but he is not blameless. I think, in the end, he will give his life for the Konaha after all. I think it will be his final glorious sacrafice. Then he will be hailed as a hero and given a hero’s funeral and Sasuke will go back to the village and be proud to have had him as a brother.

I’ve read somewhere that it was kakashi’s dad that killed the uchiha clan to get itachi to join akatsuki
yondaime was working with kakashi’s dad to form akatsuki but yeah lately im not so sure with this because of the manga i originally thought pain was yondaime
i could be wrong

I assume that it was Akatsuki methods of forcing people to join them and the only time Itachi had agreed to join was when they said they would kill his lil bro who he was extremely attached to. So the whole thing was an act and he probably made Sauske stronger so he could help him take down Akatsuki.
