Naruto Manga chapter 374 – Crayfishs, Chameleons and Toads

The battle has begun: Jiraiya and Pein face off in the epic battle between teacher and former student. And as with all epic battles in Naruto, Summons are the the name of the game. I think this fight will be at least Kage level if not higher, so don’t even bother showing up without a Summon or you’ll be laughed out the door 
It is Pein (Nagato) who opens up with the first strike and summons what looks to me like a crayfish. When I saw it I had the same feeling I got when I saw Tsunade’s slug summon; it’s not exactly the most fearsome creature one would imagine a so called “god” would summon – more like something you would serve with a side of butter dip, lol. But then again, I think Pein summoned his crayfish more to help Konan than to attack Jiraiya. The spray of bubbles it fired were used to wash the oil off Konan and allow her to escape to a safe distance. Using the bubbles as a cover, the Crayfish attempted to launch a sneak attack on Jiraiya but was no match for his crazy hair attack.
Despite how ruthless and murderous Pein has been portrayed in the past chapters, he does at least seem to have some compassion for his teammates. Pein seemed to appreciate Deidara’s sacrifice when he died and even told the other Akatsuki members to pay their respects. Note that his very first move in this fight was to free Konan so she can get out of harm’s way. Pein (Nagato) chose to save his partner before pursing his goal – this from the guy who murdered countless people including women and children just to gain absolute control in Amegakure. Why is he so careful not to let Konan get hurt? My guess is either they are lovers… or more likely they are siblings.
Any doubt about Pein not being Nagato can be cleared up by now. Note that the hand seal young Nagato was shown using last chapter and the ones Pein uses to perform jutsus are identical. However, I also noticed that although Pein seems to specialize in Water type jutsus/summons, Nagato was seen using a Wind based jutsu in chapter 373. Who appeared to be the Water element type in the group? Yahiko. Yet when Jiraiya asks about Yahiko, Pein responds that he had been dead for a long time now. This remark caused some new theories to bubble to the top of my head: perhaps Pein/Nagato has specialized in water jutsus as a way to honor Yahiko? Could Pein have used his special ability to use Yahiko as one of his bodies (ie. the first one)? Could it be that Yahiko’s death pushed Nagato over the edge and caused him to become what he is today?
After hearing Pein’s own words explaining his plans and motives, it is clear that the guy has completely perverted what Jiraiya had taught him those many years ago. Pein’s status as a “god” wasn’t just crowned on him by the people of the Rain village; this guy seriously thinks he is a “god” and wants everyone else to see him as such. In some twisted sense, Nagato has achieved Jiraiya’s advise to “grow up.” And as a “god”, he believes he can do anything and naturally anything he does is just and right.
Pein finally reveals his ultimate plan for sealing the tailed beasts. He plans to use the power of the beasts to create a forbidden jutsu capable of wiping out an entire city in seconds (ninja atomic bomb attack?). Ironically, Pein’s reason for the creation of the weapon is to stop wars and create peace. More surprisingly, Pein plans on giving the new weapon to warring nations with the full knowledge that they will eventually use them. After millions of people have died, Pein claims that the survivors will know what true pain is and will never wage war again. Pein reasons that it is his role to bring pain to the world in order to help it grow faster, much like how pain aided him in his own growth.
Tired of hearing Pein’s words, Jiraiya attempts to kill Pein but only manages to crush a replacement clone. The real Pein is still up above and has summoned something more fitting for him: a Chameleon. But I guess I should have seen this coming since that’s the first creature I thought of when I saw those ripple patterns in the Rinnegan. This chameleon is kinda weird too, having a snake for a tail, a single giant horn on its head (the other snapped off) and what appears to be a pair of diminutive wings. I can only guess what powers a chameleon might have but they generally have hard skin, a camouflage ability and are resistant to heat. Jiraiya’s fire based jutsus would probably be ineffective against it (also a bad match against Pein’s water jutsus).
In my books, Jiraiya is the king of summons; he seems to have a toad for every situations. Not to be out played a a former student, he summons a new type of frog we haven’t seen before: Gamakensan. This toad has small horn like protrusions on his head and wears a traditional cloth shirt common for feudal era Japan. His weapons are unsual too; on one hand he has a shield (which was not commonly used in Japan) and the other hand holds a spiked trident like weapon (I can’t find the right name for it). The trident is more of a defensive weapon used by feudal era Japanese police to restrain and pin targets. Based on the types of weapons, it would seem that Gamakensan is more a defense-based toad than anything else. But why is Jiraiya going into a defensive position so early in the battle? Why not summon someone like Gamabunta to finish Pein off fast? It could be that Jiraiya wants to take in Pein alive, but Jiraiya should realized by now that Pein won’t go down without an all out attack. Or could it be Jiraiya still cares for his former students or feels guilty for having abandoned them that he is unable to bring himself to use his full strength against them yet.
In a way, this battle reminds me of the one between Orochimaru and Sarutobi. There seems to be a theme going on of former students coming back to try to kill their teachers. And also like the Orochimaru/Sarutobi battle, I doubt neither Jiraiya nor Pein have even began using their full powers yet. Like in all his great battles, Kishi reserves the best jutsus for the end. This is gonna be an awesome fight.

As for paragraph 4 my guess is Pain’s rinnegan allow him to exploit all elements not just one or two as most people
Since we don’t know Gamakensan’s abilities we can’t be sure Jiraiya’ going into defensive mode.but even if he is then he’s probably trying to find out more about what happened after he left.
Overall not much info was given this chapter. I excpected more actually.
im wondering what jaraiya has taught naruto cause so far naruto hasn’t shown any new techniques that resemble anything jaraiya uses. if this goes down like the orochimaru/sarutobi fight im seeing jaraiya die =(
yeah i think jaraiya is trying to get more info so he is trying to stretch the fight out. i think j-sama might be right on nagato being able to use all elements because of his eyes.

I have another theory why pain can use water and wind elements.
Remember how Kakuzu could use the hearts he stole from other people to manipulate the different elements? Maybe Pain can do the same using other people’s bodies.
This chapter was awesome, Jiraiya’s hair techniques keeps getting crazier and crazier. Oh and I think someone asked about when Sasuke was about to use his trump card technique, it was when he first appeared before Naruto after the 2 1/2 years. He was about to use it when Orochimaru stopped him and said not to use ‘that’ technique. It’s surely a powerful technique if he was going to use it to destroy Naruto, Sakura, Sai and Yamato..

Sasuke’s actions are at times hard to understand. He has no problems trying to kill his ‘former’ friends, but when he was fighting those ninja henchmen Orochimaru sent against him or when he was fighting all the cursed seal inmates at the northern hideout, he wouldn’t allow himself or Suigetsu to kill any of them.

What an interesting plan to bring about peace.
Hard to tell the outcome of this one, seeing as how we know little about the combatants…well we know *some* of Jiraiya’s moves but we haven’t seen him go all-out yet.
And Pain…well we know he has crazy eyes, a nice summoning arsenal (so far), and the ability to control rain.
Pretty ineresting so far, I’m itching to know what else this so-called “God” can do. This is going to be one hell of a brawl.
Although I bet they’re going to switch back to Naruto and/or Sasuke next week; They’ve left them alone for quite awhile now.

Sasuke only wants to kill those that might get in the way of his revenge. He probably still has a bond with Naruto and Sakura despite how weak it’s become and sees them as a threat to his revenge.

This goes to someone who commented about Naruto’s training with Jariyia… I think we haven’t really seen what Naruto can really do I think he was training Naruto to have a face off with the leader of the Akatsuki just in case he couldn’t defeat them. That is one of the reasons he broke part of the seal…. So we will just have to see what is going to happen next but i can’t wait. I also think this is going to be an Oorichimaru and Saratubi fight all over again and I think Tsunade go come to aide her old teamate but it will be too late.. To save him
ya im pretty surre jiraiya mite die and in this way: he is trying to learn more about pein so as to be in the defensive side, then the battle gets to close for comfort so hes forced to go into fighting position, finally we come to the climax of the battle and jrayai is slowly losing, so he trys to escape with some frog to help him but the rinnengan stops it and it turns on jirayai and he dies eventually…dunno make watever u like out of it.

Anyhoo-doodle, this fight seems kinda’ fitting, do you think? Jiraiya, who refuses to really grow up versus his student, who grew up too fast.
And I agree with the varriation of elements with each body theory. I recall that sometime before the fight, Pein, I think, commented that the body he’s currently using is the best for “search-and-destroy-missions”. That’s probably why he has so many over powered summons up his massive sleeves!

The Chamelion’s tai-horn-thingl has those weird spikey bits to ‘em… Do they kinda’ look like Pein’s current piercings, or is it just me? o_O;;
I’m thinking Jiraiya will probably beat this first body of Pein’s. It wouldn’t be a good fight if Jiraiya got taken out in the first round when there’s still fice more bodies to go, right? Plus, Jiraiya’s the Man when it comes to summons, he’s got a reputation to keep.

I’m diggin the new look. I don’t think that Jiraiya is going to die now. You have alot of different theories to play with on this one. For one, as stated above, we’ve never seen the J-ster fight at full, or even half power for that matter. I believe he said he was only at 30% when the Sannin Showdown occurred. Also, even though Jiraiya is there alone, Tsunade does know where he is. Not only does she know, but she also has expressed her concern for him going there alone. So, now lies the possibility of either her coming to help, or her sending some of Konoha’s elite Jonin to help. Lets not forget that Konoha has excellent Jonin that have not been seen in the series except for during Orochimaru’s invasion.
To think Jariaya is going to die this soon is not going to happen what you will find out is that the pein that’s battling Jariaya is not the real Pein just one of the many body’s he has at his disposal.
Hello. Yup, I second (Mr.)J-sama’s theory of Jiraiya summoning a defensive frog to juice out more info regarding Akatsuki.
But remember the frog with the seal Jiraiya summoned before fighting Pein? Is it possible that the frog was Gamakichi whom the key was entrusted to? well, i hope naruto would summon his own frogs or a new set of creatures. haha. 
Hmmm…there was this picture(i think it was in this site) of Naruto sitting on the head of an unknown frog-entity, I was thinking maybe the frog is Gamakichi now grown bigger in size which I suppose could be Naruto’s personal summon…maybe this is one of his learned jutsus in training.

I’d say Gamakichi is probably as tall as Gama, but I’m wondering if he’s learned anything during the time skip, I don’t remember him doing much but hiding during a fight.
We won’t know for sure until Naruto summons him.

I think the reason why naruto hasn’t summoned a toad yet since the 2.5 year break is because like Jiryia, who only really summons the big frogs when the one he is fighting made a summon already.
One thing to keep in mind is that the summoner and the summonee aren’t always on the same page (example: Orochimaru/Sasuke and the huge snake that requires sacrafices), this would lead me to believe that Naruto/Jiryia and even Tsunade don’t over-use the summoning technique because they don’t see them as mere weapons but as companions and friends.
Also I was thinking that Jiryia didn’t summon Gamabunta (not sure on the spelling but the one that seems to be the patriarch of all the toads/frogs) in case Naruto needs him and I think its safe to assume that even Gamabunta can’t be in two places at once.
Just a thought
I think Jiraiya didn’t summon Gamabunta because the frog boss is not suited for this kind of battle.

Jirayia doesn’t seem to be taking the fight all that seriously thus far. But now he has all the information he really needs (Pein’s motive and means of achieving that motive), so the best thing to do now is get the hell out of there!
Hmmm…lots of thoughts on this…
But first thing first…Naruto isn’t a jitsu dude…he just fights. All out and quick…that’s all he knows.
Another thing is Jirayia isn’t stupid and he doesn’t finish folks off like that. I am sure he will survive and if he doesn’t I am sure he will escape to tell the tell and than die. But I hope he lives he’s the shit!

Well, Pien/Nagato and Konan do kinda’ look alike as kids. Their dark hair and faces are pretty close looking, but Konan doesn’t have the Rinnegan, so that makes it less probable…

The outcome of this battle is pretty hazy. Well hey, let’s remember that Konan is there too. Even though I’m itching to see what these two can do, I hope Konan also plays a part in this battle either in the middle or the end.
I mean come on, they just let her out of the closet and all we’ve seen her do so far turn into sheets of paper.
Even though Jiraiya is one of the funnier and stronger characters in ‘Naruto’, I have a strong feeling he’s going to die; but definatly not without kicking some “Godly” ass before then.
Jiraiya seems to be too important of a character to die in THIS fight. There might be a round two that he get’s killed in, but I dunno’ if it’s this one. But what can Konan seriously DO? She’s made of post-it notes!

I think there’s no doubt that there are more male than female visitors to this blog, but a higher percentage of girls tend to comment more.
I also have a strong feeling we’re going to get hit with a cliff hanger for awhile. We’ll probably be switching back to Naruto and Sasuke for a month or so.
Also, Konan has to have more up her sleeve, she is Akatsuki after all. I think Zetsu suits the role of a “Spy” better then her anyway.
And let’s not forget the acute stings of a paper cut.

Kishi has done a bad job of developing strong female characters in the past and it looks to me like he’s gonna push Konan to the sidelines; I don’t see much room for her in this battle.
The exceptions to this rule are Temari and Sakura in part 2.
i once said “I wonder if Konan has an actually useful jutsu besides being a scouter and launching paper airplanes cauz’ she got owned by Jiraiya” I wonder if she ever will do anything? and rly any ninja could be more dangerous than a girl who launches paper airplanes.

I think Konan’s powers are similar to Deidara’s, only she uses paer instead of clay(and she doesn’t eat it).Imagine a huge origami dinosaur that explodes!!!

Okay, as far as this fight is concerned, I think Konan will do 1 of 3 things. 1 she may sit back because she still has feelings for her sensei, 2 she won’t interfere until the opportune moment, or 3 she knew she would be outmatched so she will decide to see what Pein can do.
Another thing, this Pein character seems too full of himself to be able to defeat Jiraiya. Also, if he is a “God”, why would he need Kyuubi or Akatsuki in order to fulfill his goals? Wouldn’t he be able to accomplish these goals on his own?
What if there’s something within the Byakugan or Sharingan eye techniques that could cancel out the Rinnegan. Kinda like that little kid Renmaru that cancelled out the abilities of Neji’s Byakugan during the battle with Raiga.
I think 3 is the best choice

Mr.J-sama, maybe it causes evil…when man began to gain knowledge,he started to exploit natural resources…so i think Volter(or was it Voltaire?) is quite right.
I enjoy Enma, the 3rd Hokage’s summon…he was based from SunWuKong (SunGoKu) the monkey in the Chinese Classic story “Journey to the West”.
In Naruto, Enma can transform into a cudgel…in the original story,SunWuKong’s fighting weapon is the cudgel of which he can control its thickness,length and weight…he actually keeps it inside his ear. 
An interesting story, if you happen to find it in your library,be sure to read it…you’ll love it. 
I hope Naruto inherits Enma…but Kyuubi is better!…maybe Kyuubi would partner(as summon) with Naruto to stop Akatsuki/Sasuke in the near end?
P.S. Girls love anime’s too…especially Fushigi Yuugi or Curious Play…its their signature anime…at least here in our area.

“Journey to the west” seems to be the inspiration for many manga/animes. For example, Dragon Ball Z’s Goku was based on the character of JttW. Down to the name, Son-Goku. He even has the same weapon at frst.
I luv the look! I hope Jiraiya doesn’t die because he is kinda of the shows comic relief. Guess it’s a good thing he sent his frog friend from earlier back to Konoha in case he does need backup.
I don’t want Jiraiya to die neither, but if he dose hopefully he go’s all out. I’m curiose to see what one of the Sannin of Konoha can do.

Well the American version is (PG’ish) they always dub it so it’s suitable for the younger audience because they show it on Toonami. I don’t really bother with the English dub anime because even though it means not reading subtitles the whole show, most of the time they don’t do that good of a job (imo).
I know it’s still a long ways off, but when they get to dubbing shippuden episodes in English how are they going to manage through Hidan’s vocabulary?
Also, I’m wondering why Pein is taking orders from Tobi/Madara/Obito (pick whoever you want) If he believes he’s a god.

Konan can still be Pein’s sister even if she doesn’t have the rinnegan. I don’t think everyone from the fuuma clan has the rinnegan.. otherwise there’d be a lot of godlike ninjas walking around, so it’s probably one of those ‘once in a couple decades’ kind of thing. And yes there are other snakes.. Orochimaru summoned a bunch during the Chunnin exam.
And someone said something about ‘Obito’ beating Pein in the past, that can’t be true because Konan said that Pein has never lost a battle and he agreed to this. The reason why Pein is taking orders is probably because he needs Uchiha Madara’s power to achieve his ultimate goal. Madara probably knows what to do and he doesn’t.
Anyone else think that the ultimate purpose is kinda lame? Gathering all of the legendary tailed beasts just to set off a giant explosion? I mean give Deidara enough clay and he can do that himself.

Pein also said he was gonna ‘give’ that power to each of the countries so they’ll turn on each other. But I think all that’s gonna do is turn it into a stalemate. Look at our world, a lot of nations have nuclear warheads, but nobody has used it on another country since the US dropped the first ones on Japan. Also, what happened to Pein’s original plan to use the beasts to start wars and then forcing the other shinobi villages out of the market by using his own cheap mercenary army?

I think Pein was just lying about the first plan
When he explains to Hidan about it, he includes STARTING wars using the tailed beasts if the village refuses to hire them for missions. But we learned from this chapter that Pein wants to STOP wars by developing a jutsu-nuke; which he not only didn’t bother to mention to Hidan (and I’m guessing the other Akatsuki members), but it was part of a competley different story.
—The one he told Jiraiya: To stop wars by showing people true pain.
Pein is just using them to complete that goal and nothing more, which wouldn’t have surprised me if I didn’t remember this scene (Chapter 353):
When Kisame laughed after hearing the deaths of Kakuzu and Hidan and said he wished he knew how they died or see them die(or something like that) Pein told him not to talk about his comrades that way, and he even asks everyone to say a prayer to Deidara for his sacrifice.
So he has honor and respect (Hell, he even knows about the Will Of Fire), but not enough to tell the real plan to his “comrades”?

I think that they are just saying different stuff so they can throw off there enemies. Like how the police use the news by giveing out wrong information so that the criminals can let down there gaurds and do something stupid so they can get cought…I mean seriously that planned sounded stupid and childish from the get go.
Another thing I think everything about Pein is probably a lie. I don’t think he is from the Fuuma clan. I don’t think he thinks himself to be a god…just a miscommunication. Also he’s plans are bogus. I think Itachi and Madara knows more than the others in the group about Pein’s real plan and maybe they got there own plan of what they are going to do with all the tailed beasts. Because the Sand Village old lady Choi was explaining to Naruto and Sakura how ninjas in the past seal bijuu’s them inside they to become more powerful ninja but they couldn’t control the power and was killed. Could that be Madara’s and Itachi plan?
Well jitsus are made by making hands seals. Each seal means an animal and a series of them can specify an element. Some are made that will make since or no since at all. Basically like math! Bet you wished you listened to your teachers huh?!!! LOL! But seriously Fire style mainly ends with an Tiger sign so you throw something together and have Tiger at the end it may either be Fire or just blow you up. But basically that’s the idea…and to answer “yourshoe” question Kekkai Genkais can do it mainly because it’s like mixing Oil with Water…it just doesn’t mix right…but I guess if you make a solution with it from an chemical compond it would…basically like DNA some of it can skip a generation and some of it just disappear all together.

The key word in the sharingan’s ability is “copy”. Like if Sasuke, Itachi or TOM saw Yamato’s wood jutsu, they could copy the chakara pattern and hand seals. The sharingan just allows them to USE the different combinations of hand seals without plot-holes showing up! ;D

Hey Mr.Shoe, I think sharingans can only copy single elemental attacks…haven’t seen them Itachi/TOM(nice idea)/Kakashi/Sasuke use combined like wood….or I could be mistaken…It is good that Kishi keeps us thinking…because Descartes says,”Cogito ergo sum”, “I think therefore I exist.”
It would be a dramatic relay of the Fourth’s story if Jiraiya is defeated and tells Naruto the story before he dies…but I’m a Jiraiya fan too,so I hope this won’t happen….I would like it if Kyuubi will be the one to tell Naruto the story… 
Ms.Nefarious, i believe that from what I’ve heard in the anime, anything that violates basic moral rules such as life-importance, respect for the dead etc., is considered a forbidden jutsu…I think Chiyo’s jutsu in using her life to revive Gaara is one because she had to risk her own life to do it. It didn’t just sacrificed her life, but possibly disturbing the dead Gaara too.
Yep,Mr.Zep, Journey to the West inspired a lot of anime and other fantasy movies also in China and Japan. Actually, the anime SaiYuKi is a direct adaptation of the story,although in a twisted manner. SaiYuKi means Journey to the West in Chinese…Sai or Sei means “West” while YuKi is “Journey” or “Adventure”.
I have yet to watch SaiYuKi anime. 
The main characters of JTW are SunWuKong a monkey, ShaWuJing a cannibal who seeks to repent, TePatKay a human pig,who’s spirit descended to pigs womb thus being born with the face of a pig..hehe.and lastly TangSanZhang a priest who was so pure that to eat his flesh will make somebody immortal…that is why all monster would want to eat him and the three others would save him and protect him throughout their journey…to the west..

You know your Japanese myths, Nine! Hurray! And Saiyuki takes plenty of liberties with the myth it’s based off of, though. For starters: Sanzo (TangSanZhang) is NOT pure (He’s actually a drinking, chain smoking, gun toating, violent thug). Gojyo (ShaWuJing) Is one of the most like his myth-counterpart, however he’s not a canibal, just an outcast from society. Goku (SunWuKong) Is also known as the SetenTesei or the Monkey king in SaiYuKi. The least like his myth is Hakkai (TePatKay). He’s actually very attractive, clean and eloquent; he’s actually the one that’s looking to repent in the series.

Sharingan can not copy Kekkei Genkai’s. Also, the extent of which the Sharingan can copy jutsu’s is directly based upon the skill of the user. Doesn’t chapter 375 come out today?

I was wondering, Can all the Byakugan do is see chakra and people’s chakra points because if that is the case then it is definitely the lowest of the “3 Great Eye Techniques,” don’t you think?
Technically, yes. But the true extent of the Byakugan has not been fully filled out yet. For all we know, there could be an advenced technique that only expert users of the Byakugan can use. Also, wasn’t there a legend that the Byakugan couldn’t see through somebody (the Sage of the Six paths, or something)? That would probably make it the weakest of the three great eys techniques.
yeah and I read (don’t know if it is backed up by Kishi) that the Sharigan/ Uchiha Clan came from the Tengu mating with a Hyuga clan woman and their son was Madara Uchiha.
Oh yeah, I re-read the manga chapter when Tobi “orders” Pein and Konan to get the Kyuubi and he doesn’t say that he is Madara Uchiha but rather that he has the power of Madara Uchiha, meaning the Sharingan. This isn’t any different from when the Kyuubi told Sasuke than he had eyes more sinister than Madara Uchiha. At least that’s what I was thinking.

I hate the new opening. It’s @$%&#@!&$&@!#$%@%@#%#^^^@!!!. Hero’s Comeback was the best anime opening ever created.I cant believe they replaced it with this piece of @!#%@^%^^^^@!@!*(&. Now Naruto Shippuuden will probaly drop to #10. Too bad about Bleach.
About the Byakugan: I remeber something from Naruto season 3 or 4 that Byakugan was more powerful than sharingan (Hinata’s father said that). Maybe the byakugan has some sort of power that disables sharingan or people with byakugan could be unaffected by Mangekyou sharingan.That would mean that Neji could probably beat Itachi !

I think that the Byakugan would be stronger because if the user is looking at everything at once I don’t think he would be looking that the eyes. Also Byakugan users mainly fight by looking at the body. Also it is a close, medium, and long range fighters. So they are set from the get go. Don’t know what I am talking about…watch the Konoha invasion serious and when Neji fights that spider dude and when he fights himsef.
