Naruto Manga chapter 372 – A Country in Tears
Oh boy, chapter 372 dropped a cruise missile on my theory that Pein and Konan were teammates of Minato with Jiraiya as their sensei. It turns out they were Jiraiya’s students, but they were not from Konoha. Here’s what happened.
The Country of Rain is a small nation surrounded by the more powerful countries of Earth, Wind and Fire. During the Great Ninja Wars, the Country of Rain was used as a battleground by the three great powers, leading to many of its people being killed and leaving many war orphans in the wake. Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru were sent as a team into the country on a mission. While on a break, they are approached by one such war orphan named Yahiko who begs for food.
Because Jiraiya is sympathetic, he offers him some of his bread. Seeing his kindness, Yahiko calls out to his two friends to come out from hiding, they are Nagato and a boy named Nagato. The children continue to follow Jiraiya and the others. They want to learn ninjutsu and Konan first displays her skill with origami by making a paper rose out of wrapping paper. Orochimaru, in his usual cold-heartedness, suggests that he end the childrens’ misery by killing them. But Jiraiya offers instead to break off from the team and look after the children until they can at least defend themselves; he calls it atonement.
During supper, Nagato begins to cry because he misses his parents. Yukiho tells him to toughen up because they are men of Amegakure (Hidden Village in the Rain). Jiraiya tries to sooth the children by telling them that by the time they grow up, the wars will have ended and they can live in peace. But Yukiho wants revenge against those people who killed their parents. He believes the Country of Rain is weak, but says he will change it someday so that everyone can be safe. That is why he begs Jiraiya to teach them some ninjutsu.
The next day, while Jiraiya is pondering over Yukiho’s words, Konan runs in, drenched from the rain, and tells Jiraiya that Yukiho and Nagato are in trouble. Jiraiya rushes to the scene and finds a dead chunin from Iwagakure (Hidden Village in the Rock) lying beside a beaten up Yukiho and Nagato. Apparently, the Rock ninja demanded food and money and threatened them. That’s when something triggered inside Nagato and he somehow killed the chunin. Looking into his eyes, Jiraiya immediately recognizes Nagato’s bloodline.
Here are some of my notes on this chapter:
When Jiraiya mentions “atonementâ€, what was he referring to? Is it concerning all the people he has killed during the war in general or is about something more specific which he has done to the people of the Rain?
Is it me or does Yukiho bear a strong resemblance to a young Jugo? Now, I know for sure that Jugo did NOT come from the Country of Rain, so this theory is full of holes from the getgo. I just wish Kishi would put more variation in some of his characters. Then again, if he did that, we wouldn’t have all these wild and crazy theories to play around with.
Nagato’s eyes at the end of the chapter are the same as those of Pein’s, and Jiraiya seems to recognize the bloodline. It was said by one of the Rain ninja Jiraiya interrogated that it is believed Pein came from the “Fuuma†clan. At this point we still don’t know the Fuuma clan’s history or their Bloodline Limit abilities. It is very possible that it is another eye-based ability like the Sharingan and Byakugan. With the appearance of Madara Uchiha and his relationship to Pein, it may be possible that there is a link between their two eye abilities.
But even though Nagato has Pein’s eyes, the present day Pein’s bodies do not resemble Nagato at all. If anyone, Yukiho is the one who looks more like a young Pein. As well, Yukiho’s ideals match closely with Pein’s. So is Pein really Yukiho or Nagato? Your guess is as good as mine but keep in mind of Pein’s shapeshifting ablility, the five other bodies in the secret chamber and that the successful transplant of an eyeball with bloodline limit abilities has been done at least once in the past.
And one last note on Jiraiya. He’s always going on about young girls despite his age, but one sure way to get rejected by any girl is to spit on them. Look at Konan’s face, if that doesn’t say “I hate your guts and you’re a total disgusting pig†I don’t know what does.
it might be that Nagato and Yukiho are brothers and Nagato dies in a battle and Yukiho activates his bloodline limit or something. it’s totally far fetched but it’s possible. FIRST COMMENT!!!!
I think Yukiho is Pein because look at the pic of Jiriya and his students. Wouldn’t the little puggie one with his back turn look more like him (i.e. hair color) also where does Minato fit into this little team. When does he come to join Jiriya’s team or may Minato is Nagato but changed his name.
Ok guys Pein was not on Minato’s team at all, they’re totally different people. Anyone notice that Nagato and Naruto have somewhat similar names… Maybe the eyes are that of the dark Kyubi chakra, and Jiriaya knows that?

This whole flashback must be from before the 9-tailes’ chakra was split into dark and light because it seems like it is before Jiriya even has Minato as a student.
Jugo was from the Village of Ballance. I don’t think that could be him but, I suppose it’s possible. If it IS Jugo, this whole thing might explain how he got his little “Killing-Condition”. And nagato could be Pein, since he has the abillity to swap ‘n’ switch bodies. Or he could’ve just dyed his hair. XD
Based on their ages, I’d say this is about 10-15 years before the appearance of Kyuubi in Konoha. At this point, Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru haven’t become known as the Sannin yet either – maybe they’re on a mission which will bring them to the battle against Salamander Hanzou
That most likley happens after this event, since they have to fight Salamander-whats-his-face… ^__^

Hold the phone. With a stretch of the immagination, doesn’t Yuhiko kinda’ look like Minato? The name Namikaze means something like “Water-wind”. So could Minato be from that land of rain, since his name suggests it?

Hello. Hmmm….maybe Jiraiya took all three of them to Konoha to be his students…or just Konan and Yuhiko…however, Nagato may have shaved-off his hair for the pictorial with Jiraiya…hehehe…Kishimoto may have kept the boy’s eyes closed in the picture for suspense….But I have a strong gut-feeling that the theory of Konan being the other student of Jiraiya is true…haha.

And you hear about Jugo being from the Ballance when Diedara is questioning Kisame and Itachi about Suigetsu and Sasuke in an ealrier chapter, but your idea about Jugo being taken in by Orochimaru makes sense.

I dont think that Juugo has any connection with Yahiko. If you base it on age, since Yahiko was about 10 or 12-ish maybe 15 to 20 years ago. It would make him about 27 if he is still alive. Jugo is about Kimimaro’s age which would make him about 18 years old as Kimimaro was 15 when he died.

Could Yahiko have a kid? Yahiko seems normal enough, save for the blood-thirst for revenge. Maybe that’s how Jugo could get his little “Crazy-Killing-Disorder”.
Here’s my guess on what’s gonna happen. Jiraiya recognizes Nagato’s potential because of his bloodline. He trains the three kids in ninjutsu until they can defend themselves. But Yahiko gets over-confident and convinces the others to help get revenge on some rock ninja for their slain parents. Yahiko gets killed in the fighting, causing great grief to Nagato and Konan. They decide to take up his ideals and make the perfect and safe society, even if they have to become cold and ruthless to do so.

How about this? It’s pretty much Bob’s idea; Jiraya’s training them and stuff, Yahiko gets over confident and gets himself killed. Nagato and Konan would want revenge on the rock ninja, but the topper to all of this is that Jiraya was actually the one that killed their parents, or parts of their family. How better to atone for killing a kid’s family then to help raise the kids of the people you killed?
ya theory one makes better sense cauz what if nagatos kekai genkai is rly strong and he and konan went on a suicide mision(as u said) and jiraiya thought that they werent strong enough anyways but the eyes were so stronf that nagato and konan prevailed

Question though: Why would they, Konan and Nagato, kill the leader if their village if all they wanted was stabillity in their country? There has to be something wrong with the leader, or Nagato and Konan want an entire war against neighboring countries as payment for being screwed over as a battle ground for other villages. Did that make any sense? o_o;;

They probably have a grander plan. There’s two ways to ensure safety.
One was the previous Rain leader’s (Hanzou I guess) strategy to have over the top security in his village and keep out all enemies.
The other way is to eliminate all your enemies. How do you do this? Conquer the world of course. Remember that this was the Akatsuki leader’s (Pein’s) plan for the organization that he said way back.

just a guess, but I’m thinking that maybe Pein and Naruto are brothers. I remember that it was said that Naruto only had the the good half of the kyubbi ( cant really remember if he has other half as well) and since Pein seems more like evil he has the evil half of the kyubbi. Just a guess =/

Minato(4th Hokage) sealed Kyuubi inside of Naruto and seperated it into Ying and Yang(good and bad) Naruto only has access to the good chakra but can access the bad when in life and death situations…or when he gets pissed…unless I misunderstood it when Jiraiya.

And Pein’s might be Naruto’s crazy uncle. Why? Because Jiraya and Tsunade were talking about Naruto’s mom and said how she was a redheaded tom-boy; since Pein’s body in his first appearance had red hair, that might mean they’re related. Also, they said that Naruto’s mom was from the land of rain, so that brings origin into the picture as well.

Yeah, I can’t wait to see Madara’s role in all of this, I don’t think there’s any doubt now that he is the mastermind behind it all. Somehow I get the feeling that maybe Pein and Konan weren’t “evil” to begin with but got blinded by hate and revenge and went down the wrong path (much like what Sasuke is doing).
Well I don’t think anybody is born evil…just turn of events and getting over uneasiness of doing the wrong things. But the real problem I am having is who is Madara…I mean who is the person behind the mask…I just want to know so bad…
Also what does Pein eyes do…does it take control of peoples bodies or inflict internal pain?
I’m almost certain that it is actually Madara Uchiha in some form because Jiraiya brought up his name in c370 even though he hasn’t met Tobi yet. Either Kishi is foreshadowing what’s to come or he’s playing with us. But I’m also about 75% sure that Obito is involved in this too. Kakashi Gaiden was part of the Naruto manga continuity and not some spin-off series in a new manga. I like to think of it as a prologue to Naruto part II, meaning events/characters in KG will probably play important roles in part II.
Hi! yup Mr.Bob, I also think Obito is involved…maybe to emphasize Kakashi’s story line…hehe…If ever Madara is alive, I wonder how he managed to survive since his age would be the same as Tsunade’s grandfather, the first Hokage?
I am thinking Obito could be Madara’s successor in a way with which he was able to summon Kyuubi…another wild guess…and with regard to Kyuubi’s extraction from Naruto, I am guessing that Naruto will be Kyuubi’s master, where Kyubi will be a summoned being like Gamabunta…actually it’s how I want it to be…hehehe…oh, upon reading chapter 372, Yahiko is not the Fourth Hokage unlike what I said before..sorry… 
Question: Did Obioto die around the same time the nine tailed fox demon appeared/was summoned? If the dates match up, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Obito faked his death to carry on the psychotic leagacy of Madara. Or any kind of motive for that matter. XD
i have a long and far fetched thoery: what if obito was chosen by a dead madara to be his host, then he got orochimaru into akatsuki to make him stronger so that he could train sasuke because sasuke is one of the rare uchiiha that have power like madara to control the kyuubi so as to well i havent gotten that far… lol

I dont think Pein and Naruto are related at all. There isn’t a possibility that they are brothers. Uncle and nephew.. well maybe. The way that Nagato and Yahiko were talking it seems like all their family members were eliminated. What probably happened was that their village was attacked but the kids survived because of Nagato’s eye abilities.
Anyone think that Itachi knows about Madara? I mean the other members don’t have a clue about Tobi being ‘Madara’ because Deidara treated him like he was a kid, and Kisame said he brightened up their gloom organization. But I dont remember Itachi ever interacting with Tobi at all. And I remember back then when he said that if Sasuke activates the Mangekyou there will be three people who can use it, but I think that word had a double meaning like resist or something like that. Didn’t Itachi also say something about the true purpose of the Uchiha clan hidden inside that one temple? Maybe the true purpose requires three Uchihas who could use the Mangekyou and Itachi killed his clan, let Sasuke survive and told him how to activate the Mangekyou for this purpose.
Hmm but then again Itachi definitely isn’t a bad guy. Maybe the one who killed their clan was Madara, or made Itachi kill his clan somehow.
hmm the third person could possibly be kakashi but i highly disagree with kaka being that person cauz it was probably meant for 3 uchiha also it should be 3 because there are three of those things in a sharingan eye

Omg…guys Obito was crushed by a boulder and burried alive. No one has actually seen him die and they couldn’t recover his body. Also the three people would consist of Madara(founder), Itachi, and Sasuke. Yes Sasuke did read the scripture about the Sharingan and it’s true origin but it is possible to get it without killing your best friend. Also no one has seen Itachi kill anyone at all so there is twist. Another it may be possible for anyone with the Sharingan to control anything as long as they have enough chakra to do so. Finally yes anything anybody says could be right and dead wrong at the same time lol.
zetsu coulda found obitos body and rebuilt it same goes for madara, notice how tobi has a bunch of nails and stuff in his clothes

But you guys DO have some points. Personally, I think that Tobi/Obito/Madara had a key role in Itachi joining the Akatsuki. Because Itachi really had no actual motive to kill the Uchiha clan and never showed any real sign of being psychotic; sure, he was introverted, but that’s not crazy. Could Tobi blackmail Itachi into joining? O_O It’s a stretch, but in the realm of possibillities…

What kind of embarrassing secrets lie in Itachi’s past, oh the suspense, lol.
My theory is that Madara was reincarnated in Obito before he so called died. His plan was to fake his death and give Kakashi one of his eyes. He needs three people to use the Mangekyou Sharingan and destroy Konoha once and for all so he set his plan in motion to use himself, Kakashi, and Itachi. But the when Itachi slaughter the entire clan and left, he deicided to use sasuke instead. As time went on he realised he could get Itachi back. But Madara still needs the three pairs of sharingan eyes so that means he would use Kakashi to a certain point just so he can get his eye back now…
I know there are some holes in the this theory but this what i think.

Itachi probably didn’t kill his closest friend. He looked pretty sad when he heard the news and got seriously angry when they accused him of it. But then again.. he did admit to the murder =/

Hi everyone. hmmm…Mr.Nefarious, I like the theory of Itachi being a good guy…and being blackmailed…hehe..to flare up the idea, I am thinking maybe Madara/Obito/Tobi did blackmailed Itachi using Sasuke as his bait…Itachi who is needed for the akatsuki plans could’ve been controlled by the sharingan to kill everybody leaving Sasuke alive to keep Itachi silent about the incident and to force Itachi in joining Akatsuki…for Itachi’s part, being an ANBU member, he could be using this opportunity to infiltrate Akatsuki not just for Sasuke’s sake, but for Konoha and the rest….or….Madara/Obito/Tobi is unable to kill Itachi and used the young Sasuke as a bait to lure him in joining the group and Itachi used the opportunity also for infiltration….haha!….:P I am very much intrigued about Itachi wanting to talk to Sasuke, “intimately”…:)

I just read 373 and PEIN is Nagato hmmm…. What a real shocker but I am loving the way the story is going. This episode also revealed there are 3 great eye techiniques. So Why is the Land of the Fire home to two of the eye Techniques? It makes you wonder.
Yeah the Three Legendary Eye Techniques…maybe because Konoho is one of the magor villages also it’s one that has many clans in it unlike other villages…if there are than I haven’t noticed any that much. And Gan means Eye in Japanese…just to throw that out there.

Anyhoo, Itachi shows too much reasonabillity and understanding to really be a serious bad guy. Here’s a little far-fetched theory: Pein wants Itachi to join him. Itachi refuses. If Pein gets pissed, he could just posess Itachi and make the real Itachi face the horrible grief. With all of that emotional stress, Itachi would encourage Sasuke to kill him.

Yeah, I’m starting to believe more and more that Itachi has been manipulated all this time. There must be something sinister about the Uchiha clan, some dark goal that Madara, their founder, left behind as his legacy.

It makes one wonder why the Uchiha clan was still a part of Konoha, not to mention the main branch of the ANBU! If there was still some resentment amongst the Uchiha, horrible things would happen, thus Obito-Tobi/Madara manipulating the Kyuubi makes some sense.

To be honest, I’m not a big fan of the Naruto female characters. They’re not the most original characters, but I’ll try and find something… I’m gonna’ hate giving up Shikamaru, though.
nah, don’t force yourself. I agree that in general Kishi has done a bad job of developing female characters, well it is a “shounen” manga though.
Yeah, but there’s plenty of girls in the Shounen readers demographics. In fact I don’t know any guys from my school that recieves shounen jump! /._.\ It’s strange.

well i can see a lot of good plots and some stupid ones as well. but here is my theory…… first of all pain must have taken over a dozen of bodies including his friend that ended up died somehow. and the most important thing is that Uchiha Madra or whatever his name is, took over Obit, Kakashi’s childhood friend. because if u noticed, Tobi or Uchiha Madara has one eye to the right while covering the left which kakashi has …….. and this seems logical….. the most important twist is Naruto’s mother. When will she appear? and if not whats her history? Plus something bad must happen to naruto because the way he is now, he can never win against Pein.

i also believe that itachi is being controled by madara uchiha. maybe pein found obito’s body in the rock country and placed madara’s soul into it.

its possible that the fourth is related to yahiko.
narutos mom is from the whirlpool country so perhaps the fourth met her when they were young and fled to konoha to get protection from the village.

yeah i kinda agree with justin it is kind of possible that pein reincarnated madara maybe that’s the reason why he wears that mask, to hide the bolts and stuff on his face. pein could have used tobi’s body too, which kinda explains the mask with the one eye hole, but i could be wrong, anyway awsome theories guys keep up the good work and keep it up bob

Ultimatehokage- i totally agree with you about DBZ. besides naruto has a alot more interesting polt line than DBZ.
so, naruto is back square one then. i knew this was going to happen. i just hope he comes out better off than just super strength cause that’s not that special, since saruka and tsunade’s got it as well.
speaking of that- i think naruto will will not be training to learn new techniques but more of tactical fighting. cuase i doubt wind rasengan will be overcome in the list of naruto’s most powerfull tecgniques for a long time. but i have no idea about what type of tactics he is going to learn.
for some reason i feel sorry for sakuke. i know that there is alot of drama going on with him but i feel sorry for him but i don’t quiet know why….
… out of a fight between sukake and naruto(after he has finished sage training). will naruto be strong enough to save konaha?
by the way. just wondering- will pein be able to find naruto. since he is out to kill him. will he find him in the mountains( which i don’t know the name of)?
