Naruto chapter 369 – Who is Pein?
Chapter 369 offers a more in depth glimpse of just who Pein is. According to the low-rank shinobi Jiraiya has been interrogating, Pein is seen virtually as a god by the people of the Land of Rain but is so secretive that most people don’t know what he looks like. It is said that Pein comes from the Fuma clan, although nothing more about that clan is known at this time.
Amegakure, the Hidden Village in the Rain, had been in a civil war for years now. One of the sides was led by Hanzou, often called Salamander Hanzou, who was highly regarded as a fierce fighter by shinobi everywhere. Apparently he gave Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochmaru the title of the ‘Sannin of Konoha’ as a reward for surviving a brutal battle against him during the ninja wars. He was highly careful about security and was guarded 24 hours a day. Even so, Pein was able to kill Hanzou single-handedly and gain complete control of Amegakure. In fact, Pein was so ruthless and thorough that he killed all of Hanzou’s family, relatives, friends and even those associated with him through business. Nothing was left of Hanzou’s organization, everything was reduced to ashes.
So if Pein was able to kill off Hanzou, someone Jiraiya even fears, so easily, the chance of Jiraiya surviving an encounter with him are not looking good. And time is running out for Jiraiya as Pein has already detected his infiltration and begun the hunt.

It feels like that’s where Kishi might be going with this current story, but I hope Jiraiya lives. First I thought Tsunade would be hit the most hard if Jiraiya does die, but then I realized there was someone else who would be even more saddened — Kakashi! No Jiraiya = No more ‘Make Out Paradise’!
