474 - Resolve as the Hokage
Sai’s clone has approached Naruto to tell him what Sakura
was hiding from when she confessed; Konoha has ordered
Sasuke’s death warrant, and even Naruto’s friends are
preparing to
act on it. Naruto is stunned by the news but Sai explains that
there’s no hope of redemption left for Sasuke after the criminal group
he is a part of, Akatsuki, attacked and destroyed much of
Konoha. Sakura has come to terms with this and came to talk
to Naruto herself, but she
couldn’t bring herself to do it because the truth will hurt
Naruto. Instead, Sakura tried to free Naruto from their
promise by giving up on Sasuke and confessing her love to
him.
Sakura had forbid anyone else to tell Naruto the
truth, but Sai felt responsible for pushing Sakura into this direction
and wanted to let Naruto know. Because Naruto’s has refused
to give up on saving Sasuke, both Sai and Kakashi believe
Sakura plans to kill Sasuke herself. Naruto has a hard time believing
how Sakura can commit such an act when she still loves Sasuke
so much. Sai’s belief is that it is because she loves him
that Sakura will resort to killing Sasuke with her own hands in order
to prevent him from sinking any further into the darkness. This is
Sakura’s way of atoning for promise she has burdened Naruto with for so
many years.
All of this is a huge shock for Naruto. The situation has
changed and his dream of bringing Team 7 back together is shattered by
reality. At that moment, Gaara, Temari and Kankuro arrive to
deliver news of the events at the kage summit.
Danzo’s actions at the meeting means he will be stripped of his
title as Hokage, meaning Kakashi is the next candidate in
line. But even though Madara has declared war on the world,
they will need to get back to Konoha before deciding their next course
of action. After hearing about Sasuke’s attack on the summit,
it was clear even to Naruto the path his former teammate has
chosen. Gaara makes it clear to Naruto that he will protect
him with his life to prevent the Kyuubi from ending in Akatsuki’s
hands, and he will show no
mercy to any Akatsuki member, even
Sasuke. Seeing Naruto’s hesitation,
Gaara adds that Sasuke has chosen this path of evil of his own free
will. If Naruto truly wants to live up to the
responsibilities of a kage, then he must be prepared to do what he must
as Sasuke’s friend.
Elsewhere, Danzo and his bodyguards journey home
is interrupted by the sudden appears of Madara. Danzo asks Fuu and
Torune to back him up as he prepares to release his right arm for the
coming fight.
