CHAPTER 406 - Unlock the Future

0textembed
Tsunade meets with Ibiki Morino and brings with her one of Jiraiya’s frogs which is still holding a shinobi from the Hidden Rain Village inside.  Ibiki mentions that Jiraiya had told him about something like this before he left and asks the frog to enlarge itself.

Fukasaku’s words still linger in Tsunade’s mind.  In her office earlier, he explained to Naruto that Jiraiya never wanted to fight with Pein.  But when they fought, Pein was beyond anything they could handle.  Jiraiya did everything he could to salvage something out of this lost battle.  He willed himself back to life just so he get his vital message back to Konoha.  Tsunade walks away and tells Ibiki to not hold anything back while interrogating their captured Rain ninja.

Inside a surgical room at another location in Konoha, a medical team begins their dissection of the corpse of one of Pein’s bodies which Jiraiya managed to slay.  Elsewhere at the cryptology squad’s headquarters, Shikamaru asks for an update on the progress in decrypting Jiraiya’s code.  The chief of the department responds that the code is definitely not written in any of the Leaf’s algorithms.  He suspects that Jiraiya’s code can’t be very complex as he made it just before dying.  A female member of the cryptology team named Shiho suggests to Shikamaru that Jiraiya probably made the code so that only someone close to him would have access to the right “combination” to crack it.  She suggests that Shikamaru try talking to those who were close to Jiraiya in order to seek out some clues.  Shikamaru thanks them and says he will come back if he needs more help.  Shiho stares after him as he leaves, all the while blushing.  The chief says he is going home, but Shiho touches up her hair in the mirror and insists on staying behind.

Shikamaru visited Tsunade first but turned up no new information on the code.  Next, he catches Kakashi to see if the numbers ring any bells for him.  Kakashi sees the number ‘106’ and pauses for a moment.  He remembers back to an incident in the past where Jiraiya murmured that very number while standing next to him on the street.  However, Jiraiya was starring at Tsunade’s breasts at the time and what he meant was 106cm - his estimate of Tsunade’s bust size.  Kakashi immediately throws out that idea as a possible clue for the code.  He recommends that Shikamaru go see Naruto next and, if anything, to try to cheer him up.

Shikamaru is greeted by a depressed and gloomy Naruto at his home.  Inside the room, he shows Naruto a picture of the code, but Naruto completely blanks out. Shikamaru gets up and tells Naruto to come with him for a minute.  They arrive at the Konoha hospital where a very much pregnant Kurenai Yuhi exits from its doors.  Naruto is astounded, but for the wrong reason.  He assumed that Kurenai must have eaten too much barbeque and had to get treated at the hospital.  Shikamaru comments that Naruto is even worse than Choji and tells him that Kurenai is carrying a kid in her womb, not beef.

Kurenai smiles and tells Shikamaru that he doesn’t need to come see her off everyday like this, but Shikamaru replies he is obligated to because he promised Asuma he would.  As Kurenai walks away, Shikamaru tells Naruto that one day Asuma’s child will become his pupil.  He says to Naruto that he knows how he feels regarding Jiraiya’s death because he himself also lost his sensei.  Shikamaru’s advice for Naruto is to move on because nothing will happen if he keeps dwelling on this.

Both Asuma and Jiraiya had taught them a lot of things, and soon it will be time for Naruto and Shikamaru to stop being students and start being adults who pass on knowledge to the next generation.  Shikamaru tells Naruto that they can’t remain as kids forever - not if they want to grow up into great shinobi like Asuma and Jiraiya.  These words bring a smile to Naruto’s face and brightens his day.  Shikamaru holds up the picture of the code again and tells Naruto to get back on track because they have a job to do.
