CHAPTER 400 - In the Pits of Hell

Sasuke can’t believe what he is hearing, his own clan was plotting a coup d’etat against Konoha and Itachi was a spy sent to stop them.  Madara explains to him that he was simply too young at the to understand what was really going on, but guarantees that it is all true.  He then shocks Sasuke even further by revealing that Fugaku, Sauske’s own father, was the ringleader behind the rebellion.  Fugaku was the one who pushed Itachi into joining ANBU because he wanted Itachi to send information back to the clan from the Hokage’s inner circle.  But the opposite was actually happening because Itachi had already become a double agent for Konoha.  Even though he continued to carry out his duties, Itachi carried an immense burden on his shoulders.

Sasuke finds it difficult to believe that Itachi would betray his own clan so easily.  Madara tells him that it’s difficult for someone who has never experienced the true terrors of war to understand Itachi’s rationale.  Itachi was only four years old when he witnessed firsthand the deaths of countless people in the Third Great Shinobi War.  The trauma from that period helped shape Itachi into a person who loathes war and would devote his life to keep his village safe and stable.  Danzou, then the leader of ANBU, saw this trait in Itachi. He understood that Itachi’s loyalty to Konoha was greater than his bond to his clan, and exploited .

Itachi was given a top secret mission, one that only he could accomplish - to take on an Uchiha you need to have the Sharingan.  Itachi’s mission was to wipe out his own clan.  The pressure and inner turmoil which Itachi endured is unimaginable. But as difficult as his grim task was, Itachi also knew very well that a civil war triggered by a group as strong as the Uchiha clan will not only rip apart Konoha, but throw the entire Fire Country into chaos.  It would allow the other countries to stage invasions, and the resulting power struggle will almost for certain trigger a fourth war.  Countless innocent people everywhere will die simply as a consequence of  the Uchiha clan’s lust for power.  Madara turns to Sasuke and asks what he would have done in that situation.  Sauske has no response.

Itachi had to make a choice and his decision was to end his clan’s legacy with his own hands.  Madara adds that by coincidence, he was active around Konoha during that time looking to stir up war again.  Madara says that at that time, he had a grudge against both Konoha and Uchiha.  Itachi was the only one who sensed Madara’s presence and tracked him down.  He offered Madara a deal: he will aid Madara in taking revenge on the Uchiha clan, but in exchange Madara must promise to leave the rest of Konoha alone. The Third Hokage knew what Itachi had been ordered to do and tried everything to convince the other council members that they can reconcile with the Uchihas.  But time ran out and the fateful night arrived.

Itachi planned out and executed his mission flawlessly.  Aided by the power of the Mangekyou Sharingan, he would slaughter the entire clan and then live his life as a wanted criminal.  However, there was one tiny detail which Itachi could not complete - he could not kill his little brother.  Before he carried out his mission, he pleaded with the Hokage to keep Sasuke safe after he is gone.  And before leaving the village, Itachi met with Danzou one last time and threatened to reveal Konoha’s secrets to all the rival countries if anything were to happen to Sasuke.

Itachi cared more for Sasuke’s life than his own and did everything in his power to ensure his little brother’s safety.  In order to make sure Sasuke would grow up strong, he made himself the target of Sasuke’s hate.  He wanted Sasuke to continue to believe that the Uchihas were the pride of the Hidden Leaf, so he asked the Third to never let Sasuke learn the truth about his clan.  Itachi left the village having already accepted that it would be his fate to eventually die by Sasuke’s hand.  It was his way of making sure that Sasuke would receive his final gift - the power of the Mangekyou Sharingan.

Madara finishes by telling Sasuke that Itachi lived his life as it was in order to protect him.  But Sasuke seems to be going into denial again. His eyes glaze over and Sasuke starts repeating that what Madara has been telling him must be all lies.
