CHAPTER 399 - Where Everything Started

Hashirama Senju was the first person to hold the title of Hokage.  He and his clan, the Senju, were both respected and fear by all other clans as being the best.  The Uchiha clan was the only one capable of standing up to the Senju.  So if one country hired the Senju, the other would have to hire the Uchiha if they hoped to stand a chance.

Madara admits that through his constant battles against Hashirama, he became more famous himself.  Sasuke asks whether Madara stole his brother’s eyes just to become famous.  Madara admits that he did take his brother’s eyes, but only to gain the power needed to protect his clan.  He explains that although their reputation grew, their enemies also increased.  Madara says his brother’s eyes were sacrificed in order to protect everyone in the clan from these outside threats.  He adds that it was never about fame and that his brother willingly gave his eyes to him because he accepted his role.  Madara clenches his arm tightly as he says this.

One day, however, the Senju proposed a truce.  The Uchihas accepted because both sides were tired of the never ending fighting and bloodshed.  But Madara was the only person against the idea because he refused to let his brother’s sacrifice go to waste.  Madara believed that the Senju and Uchiha would never get along.  He was convinced that their enemy would eventually destroy them, but no one in the clan shared his view.  In the end, Madara had to follow the will of his people and agree to the truce.

The newly formed Uchiha-Senju alliance was soon hired by the Fire Country to secure its borders, this is how the system of one Hidden Village per country began.  The Fire Country had obtained its Hidden Leaf and soon other countries saw the prosperity in the idea and emulated that system.  Things began to stabilize and a real peace was obtained throughout the continent.

However, the newly founded Leaf village soon found itself in internal turmoil after one event - the selection of the First Hokage.  Hashirama Senju was chosen and he had the support of almost everyone in Fire Country.  But Madara knew it was the beginning of the Uchiha clan’s decline as Hashirama would surely use his power as leader to strip away their rights and power.  As the leader of the Uchiha clan, Madara knew it was his duty to stand up against Hashirama and protect his people.  But everyone in the clan claimed Madara was trying to incite war again because of his appetite for battles and his lust for power.  They started saying he only took his brother’s eyes to save his own life, but Madara states that only a monster would hurt his own brother.  All he ever wanted was to protect the clan.

Betrayed and alone, Madara abandoned the village and took on the role of an avenger.  He challenged the Leaf village single-handedly and fought an epic battle versus Hashirama at the place now known as the Valley of the End.  Madara lost, and everyone including Hashirama had believed he had perished.  His name soon faded from history.

To appease the Uchiha clan, the Second Hokage, Hashirama’s younger brother, assigned the Uchiha to new roles in Konoha’s military police.  But Madara believes this was simply a way to keep the Uchihas together so they would be easy to monitor, and kept out of government affairs.  Some in the clan began to notice, but it was too late to anything about it.  Within generations, the Senju would come to control everything, leaving the powerless Uchiha as nothing more than pawns.  And sixteen years ago, the appearance of the Kyuubi was the final event which sealed the Uchiha clan’s fate.

Because the Uchihas were known to be the only ones with an eye technique capable of controlling the Nine-Tails Demon Fox, Konoha’s leaders suspected them as being behind the attack.  Madara says that the clan was blameless because it was only a freak occurrence, but the Konoha’s leaders were convinced the Uchihas were planning to take control of the village.  To better keep watch over the Uchihas, their land was moved

to a remote corner of the village.  The only person who opposed the idea was the Third Hokage, but his advisors, Koharu and Homura, and the leader of ANBU, Danzou, overruled him.  Everyone began to distrust the Uchihas and this led to resentment on the Uchiha’s side.  The village’s suspicions soon came true as the Uchihas began to secretly organize a rebellion.  To counter this, the Leaf’s leaders ordered a spy to be planted amongst the.  Their candidate was Itachi Uchiha.  His life would soon be turned into a living hell.
