CHAPTER 391 - With the Thunder

After announcing his so-called inescapable attack, Sasuke does nothing more but stare up into the clouds while rain pours down heavily.  Itachi then suddenly realizes what Sasuke was starring at as a thunderous surge of lightning gathers directly above them.

Zetsu‘s dark side is the first to understand what Sasuke has been up to until now.  The fireballs which he fired earlier were not aimed at Itachi at all.  Sasuke blasted them into the atmosphere on purpose to rapidly generate a rising air current - the key ingredient in creating cumulonimbus, or thunderclouds.  Sasuke had been preparing for this attack even during Itachi’s Amaterasu.  The reason why Sasuke ran outside instead of hiding inside the building complex was to spread the Amaterasu’s black flames around in order to help him further heat up the air above.

Sasuke readies a Chidori and leaps up to the rooftop again and then jumps further to reach the highest position on the building.  Instead of using his own chakra, Sasuke plans on harnessing the lightning from the sky itself to attack Itachi.  He plans on using himself as the lightning rod and then directing the incoming electricity directly onto Itachi using his Chidori and lightning element manipulation.  In short, it will be a lightning element strike of a magnitude far beyond anything a human can produce with his chakra.  And Sasuke wasn’t bluffing when he said the jutsu was unavoidable; because lightning can reach the ground in 1/10,000th of a second, there is no way even Itachi can escape it.

With all the conditions met, Sasuke raises his hand with the Chidori and announces his attack.  He calls it Kirin, it is named after a mythical beast that was said to punish the wicked.  A loud crack accompanied by a flash of lightning reveals for a second the form a giant beast resembling a dragon.  With the words “disappear with the thunder”, Sasuke lowers his hand.  In that instant a powerful beam of lightning crashes down with such force that it obliterates large sections of the building complex.

The attack is over quickly, and amidst the smouldering rumble Sasuke spots Itachi lying face down and motionless on the ground.   Sasuke deactivates his Sharingan and shouts out that it is finally over.  But as the rain stops, a familiar voice asks whether this was what Sasuke had envisioned of his death.  Sasuke jerks around rapidly and sees Itachi, dripping blood from his mouth, slowly rise back to his feet. Sasuke can’t believe what he is seeing.  He is so infuriated that he immediately transforms into his Cursed Seal level 2 state.  However, this transformation is a bit different because a familiar pattern suddenly appears around Sasuke’s left eye - the same pattern which Orochimaru had.

As Itachi rises to his feet, the translucent form of the upper torso of a skeleton appears around him.  A close-up of Itachi’s face reveals that he no longer has the Mangekyou Sharingan and his pupils are extremely contracted.  Itachi tells Sasuke that he has become stronger than he had ever imagined.; he also admits that he would have certainly been killed if he had not used the last weapon in his arsenal: Susanoo.
