CHAPTER 386 - My New Light

Itachi’s mentioning of the final secret of the Mangekyou Sharingan confuses Sasuke as he had originally believed that the secret was about being able to control the Kyuubi.  Itachi tells Sasuke that the secret is the last and most important piece of the puzzle to the destiny of those of the Uchiha clan.

Itachi pauses a moment and stares at his younger brother.  His image of Sasuke is blurred and dark – the blindness caused by the Mangekyou Sharingan has already severely deteriorated Itachi’s vision.  Itachi then begins telling Sasuke a story about their clan’s history, one that predates the founding of Konoha.  The central players in this story are Madara Uchiha and one other – his younger brother (who is not named).  The two brothers were equal in all the skills of a shinobi, and constantly competed to best one another.  They both awakened their Sharingans at an early age and were recognized as geniuses among their fellow clansmen.  They continued to refine their skills and eventually gained the power of the Mangekyou Sharingan through the process of murdering their friends.

No other Uchiha had ever obtained the Mangekyou before, so the brothers took control of the clan with Madara becoming the leader.  However, Madara soon discovered the side effect of using the powers of the Mangekyou Sharingan - he began to go blind.  Madara tried everything he could to try to regain his sight, but it was all in vain.  Finally, Madara became desperate, and having been possessed by the Mangekyou, he plucked out the eyes of his own brother to replace his own.

The light returned to Madara’s eyes, but also granted him new powers.  His Mangekyou Sharingan was now permanent and also gave birth to a completely new eye technique.  This is the final secret behind the Mangekyou Sharingan of the Uchiha clan: gaining an eternal Mangekyou Sharingan through the sacrifice of a sibling.  Itachi mentions that this transplant of the Sharingan is only possible between fellow Uchiha clansmen.  Also, gaining another person’s eyes does not equate to gaining his powers.

With his new powers, Madara took control of every other shinobi clan the Uchihas encountered.  Eventually, he formed an alliance with the formidable Senju clan of the forest and formed a new organization that would become known as the Hidden Leaf.  The leader of the Senju was none other than the First Hokage of Konoha.  However, he and Madara soon began to quarrel over the future policies of Konoha.  This ultimately culminated in an epic battle at the Valley of the End where Madara was defeated.  But Madara did not die that day, for he was somehow able to achieve a form of immortality through the Mangekyou.  He abandoned his clan and left Konoha to form a new organization: Akatsuki.  Madara hid his identity under Akatsuki’s shadow but secretly directed its actions and goals.  It was Madara who was responsible for unleashing the Kyuubi onto Konoha 16 years ago.  But his plans were once again stopped, this time by the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, who sealed the Nine-Tails inside his own son, Naruto.

Itachi finishes telling his tale, but says that he believes the current Madara is only a shell of his former self and no longer worthy of being called the greatest Uchiha.  Itachi believes that he himself is destined to surpass Madara and bring the powers of the Mangekyou to the next level.  But to achieve this goal, Itachi first needs Sasuke; or rather he needs Sasuke’s eyes.  In an outburst of emotion never seen before, Itachi shouts at Sasuke like a crazed maniac that he will be his “new light.” Sasuke will be the one to provide him with a new pair of Sharingan eyes so that he may regain his full vision and achieve a permanent Mangekyou Sharingan.

The image of a demonic creature with two sets of eye sockets manifests behind Itachi, one set of eyes is filled by Sharingan eyes while the other set remains empty.  Itachi continues his wild outburst and claims that the Uchihas have traditionally been murdering their friends and siblings in order to obtain the Mangekyou and to make its power eternal.  In its lust for power, the Uchiha clan has stained its hands with the blood of its own and is cursed to repeat this cursed destiny.  Itachi announces that once he has killed Sasuke and stole his eyes, he will finally be able to escape the wretched destiny of their clan and expand his powers to unimaginable levels.  Itachi tells Sasuke that they were born to be each other’s “spare” and that this is the bond shared between all Uchiha brothers.  The hair of the demonic creature suddenly comes to life and wraps around Sasuke.  The strands of hair form into a claw shape that draws closer and closer to Sasuke’s left eye.

At that moment, Sasuke remembers the words Itachi had told him when he was young.  Itachi had once told him that he was the ultimate obstacle for Sasuke to overcome.  And on the night of the Uchiha massacre, Itachi had told Sasuke that the only reason he let him live was for his own benefit, and not out of compassion.

Sasuke closes his eyes and dispels the genjutsu that he witnessed of the crazed version of Itachi.  Itachi, still calmly standing in front of him, asks if Sasuke got a glimpse of his true self.  Sasuke removes the bandages on his head and his black cloak.  With cold but resolute Sharingan eyes, Sasuke stares back at Itachi and announces that it will all end here.
