CHAPTER 382 - My Real Decision

Jiraiya lies face down on the ground with five of Pein’s black belts piercing his back.  Pein’s remaining five bodies surround him and watch silently.  Jiraiya now knows the true identity of Pein and wants to get the message back to the Toad Sage before its too late.  But his throat is crushed and he can’t utter a single word. Pa toads yells at Jiraiya but he can’t make out a word he is saying.  Jiraiya attempts to get up to his feet but he collapses immediately in a pool of his own blood.  He begins to lose consciousness and everything goes black.  Jiraiya questions if he has failed everybody.

A flashback sequence occurs showing a younger Jiraiya writing the book the Toad Sage had foretold he would write to record the knowledge and experiences he will accumulate on his travels around the world.  Looking up at the monument of the Hokages of Konoha, Jiraiya writes that the measure of a shinobi is not in what they do in life, but what they do before dying.  Thinking back on his own life, Jiraiya believes it to be a failure.  He failed to win Tsunade’s heart, he failed to save Orochimaru from himself, he failed to save the lives of neither his sensei, Sarutobi, nor his student, Minato Namikaze.  Compared to the great Hokages, Jiraiya thinks his own accomplishments are insignificant.  Jiraiya wanted to have an honorable and worthy death like them at least.  He convinced himself that his failures in life were only to help him build character; in return, he would be granted one last adventure and a death fitting of a true shinobi.  Dying helplessly at the feet of Pein was not how Jiraiya wanted it to turn out.

Jiraiya believed that the revolutionary ninja the Toad Sage foretold he would teach was Nagato.  He concluded that the crucial decision he would have too make was to defeat Pein and save the world from Akatsuki.  But in the end, he failed in this quest as well.  Jiraiya starts to believe that his own life is truly pathetic and writing the book was a waste of his time.

Then Jiraiya remembers back to a conversation he had with Minato at his house.  Minato, having read the book, insists that it is great and tells his sensei that he loved it because each chapter was like a page out of Jiraiya’s own life.  Jiraiya blushes a little and says that even so, the book didn’t sell well and he is considering spicing it up a little.  Minato continues to praise the book and says that the protagonist was really cool because he never gave up even at the end, much like Jiraiya.  He surprises Jiraiya when he states that he wants to raise his child like the hero in the book and name him after that character.  Jiraiya questions Minato if he is sure about that because he just came up with the name when he was eating some ramen.  Kushina Uzumaki, Minato’s pregnant wife, walks in and tells Jiraiya that she thinks “Naruto” is a beautiful name for their child.  Jiraiya is embarrassed and asks Minato and Kushina if it’s really alright because it would make him Naruto’s godfather.  Minato is absolutely sure and tells his sensei there is no finer example of a shinobi he would want his son to grow up following.

The realization that he had named Naruto comes to the current Jiraiya.  Thinking back to Naruto’s progress, Jiraiya believes that the young ninja has really turned out exactly like the character in his book, just like what his parents had wanted.

Jiraiya then remembers his conversation with Orochimaru during their last encounter.  Orochimaru had stated that the true skill of a shinobi is by how many ninjutsus he can master, as the name ninja suggests.  Jiraiya refutes that notion and tells his former teammate that a true shinobi is someone who stands firm - never giving up and never going back on his word no matter how bad it gets.  This is Naruto’s way of the ninja. Jiraiya is ashamed that he, as Naruto’s teacher, was about to give up and simply die like this.  After all, a student’s way of the ninja should also be the master’s.

Through sheer force of will, Jiraiya forces himself back to life.  Pein and his team were turning away to leave, and is surprised because he was certain Jiraiya’s heart had stopped.  Jiraiya glances at Pa and the toad seems to understand what he intends to do.  Pa detaches himself from Jiraiya and allows him to burn something into his back with a seal.  Pein and the others rush back but it is already done and Pa prepares to make his escape, telling Jiraiya that he “got it all.”  Jiraiya smiles through a bloodied mouth and collapses to the ground again as he had used his last ounce of strength.  He understands now that the choice he had to make was to not give up until he found out Pein’s true identity.  Jiraiya now knows that the “destined child” is not Nagato, but Naruto.  And the future now rests on his shoulders now.
