MenuCHAPTER 378 - One on One 
After their initial skirmish, Jiraiya has not made any
progress
in defeating Pein’s Akatsuki trio and they are back to square
one. Strangely, all three of Pein’s team appear to
be
dangling a black belt from their right sleeves as if they were
connected somehow. Jiraiya recognizes that the situation is
getting worse because so far all of his ninjutsus have either  been
blocked or cancelled. Even if he is in Hermit Mode, Jiraiya
knows
he will be killed if the battle continues on like this. Pa
toad
suggests a tactical retreat and Jiraiya agrees. In a puff of
smoke, they disappear from sight and attempt to hide within the pipes
below the city.While they are running through the underground, Pa tells Jiraiya that he has been analyzing the Rinnegan boys, but doesn’t believe all three of them can 
possess the Rinnegan. Only the real Nagato has the legendary
eyes; but which one is the real him? Pa notes that all three
must
share their field of vision with each other. He uses the
analogy
of a video camera surveillance system where the control room sees the
points of views from all cameras at once. So only
one of
Pein’s members need to see their target for all of them to be
aware; this is how they can defend and attack
with such perfect timing. With such an excellent combination
ability, the Rinnegan is superior to the Byakugan because each person
can cover the others’ blind spots.Jiraiya believes if only he can split up their enemy, he is confident he can defeat them if it is one-on-one combat. The only problem is that Pein will surely stick to his 
combination attacks so that his team doesn’t get
separated.
Jiraiya has tried both taijutsu and ninjutsu on Pein and his summons,
but neither has been very effective. The only alternative is
genjutsu, but Jiraiya has never been very strong with that type of
techniques. Pa suggests that Jiraiya let he and Ma aid him,
but
Ma is really against the idea. Pa tells
her not to be
selfish because the fate of the world may be at stake, but Ma continues
to doubt whether what the toad sage’s words were
true.
But truthfully, Ma is too embarrassed because their genjutsu requires
she and Pa to sing a duet together. The toads’
genjutsu
working through sound, so they must sing (or croak) a melody
together. It takes some time for them to synchronize though,
and
during that time Pein could easily find them by following the sounds
they generate. But if they can get Pein before
they’re
found, Pa is confident there is no way they’ll
lose.
Jiraiya decides to gamble with the genjutsu and tells the toads about a
plan to buy them some time. A short time later, the toads begin to belt out their genjutsu melody while perched above Jiraiya’s shoulders. Pein is immediately alerted by the loud vibrations travelling through the pipes and traces it back to its source. He and the others spot  Jiraiya and the toads and charge towards
them. But
they’ve fallen into Jiraiya’s trap as a Jiraiya
shadow
clone, who was hiding in the walls
using the toad silhouette technique, appears behind them and unleashes
a Giant Fire Blast jutsu. As expected, the fat one leaps in
front
of it to absorb the ninjutsu, but this was also part of
Jiraiya’s
plan. As he suspected, each member of
Pein’s team
appears to only specialize in one type of jutsu. Right now,
the
fat one is blinded by the fire and the thin one’s eyes are
closed
due to the damage inflicted by Jiraiya from earlier. This
means that Pein is the only one with a clear field of vision of Jiraiya. Pein and the thin Akatsuki
member charge at the
real
Jiraiya, but
