CHAPTER 375 - The Two Hermits

Toad vs Chameleon    Jiraiya tells Gamakensan that they don’t have the luxury of watching and learning how Pein fights; they need to go at him with full strength from the start.  Jiraiya makes small bites in his hands to draw blood and uses it to draw new markings on his cheeks.  He declaresJiraiya that he is transforming into Hermit Mode by calling upon the two great hermits.  Jiraiya asks Gamakensan to buy him some time until he finishes.  Gamakensan replies that although he is clumsy, he’ll  do his best.  However, before Jiraiya can begin, Pein makes a surprising move.  He lands on his Chameleon’s tongue and is retracted into its mouth.  The Chameleon then vanishes Pein disappearscompletely from sight.  Jiraiya has no choice but to switch tactics and go defensive by creating a barrier.  He clacks his sandals together in the air and stomps down on them to initiate an expanding sphericalBarrier on barrier which envelops himself and Gamakensan.

Pein knows that Jiraiya can pinpoint his location as soon as he touches the barrier, and so switch his tactics as well.  Pein summons a giant three headed hound with similar piercings and ripple patterned eyes to attack.  Jiraiya is impressed that his opponent saw through his move and sent in a Three headed houndsummoned anime to attack so as to not give away his position. Jiraiya rides atop Gamakensan and battles against the hound to the upper levels of the city. Gamakensan manages to leap onto a high tower and grab a hold of amultiple attacks pipe and holds his position.  Jiraiya is perplexed by the summoned animal they are fighting.  The hound multiplies every time he hits it; Jiraiya wonders if somehow its power just increases on its own.  But Jiraiya has no time to ponder on it because the hound, now with ten heads, splits into multiple bodies and attacks them at once.  Gamakensan whacks the first two with his trident, but Jiraiya warns him about a hound coming from above.  The toad can’t react in time and is hit off the tower and forced to drop his weapon.

Attack of the bird    While in mid-air, a giant bird summoned by Pein makes a torpedo dive at Gamakensan and Jiraiya.  Gamakensan has no choice but to block the blow with his shield.  The sheer force of the impact sends him crashing into the ground, his shield landing several feet away.  Jiraiya steps down ontoNagato's Rinnegan ability Gamakensan’s belly and ponders why Pein is using only summoned animals to attack while he remains hidden.  He asks Gamakensan if he finds it strange, but the toad responds that he is kind of slow and doesn’t quite get it.  Jiraiya remembers that Nagato was able to master ever jutsu he taught him thanks the abilities of the Rinnegan. And on top of that, Nagato was able to master all six types of chakra nature manipulation - something unheard of in the shinobi world.  In effect, Nagato possessed the ability to use any jutsu he desired since the age of 10.  So why is the current Nagato, Pein, using only summoning techniques? Jiraiya becomes a little steamed when he realizes that maybe Pein is trying to say he doesn’t need to waste energy fighting Jiraiya directly.

Bull ram    Pein doesn’t give Jiraiya any breathing room and has already summoned a bull to charge he and Gamakensan on thenot good enough ground.  Jiraiya tells Gamakensan to leave and let him handle things from here on.  Gamakensan apologizes and is unsummoned in a puff of smoke.  Jiraiya is left to take the full brunt of the bull’s charge and is hammered into a wall.  Pein waits to see if Jiraiya is defeated, but almost immediately a mighty explosion from blows the bull out of the way.  From the shadows of the hole in the wall, a voice asks Jiraiya why he always calls them out when he is in the middle of some rampage; she tells him it is no wonder Gamabunta is always mad at him.  A second voice refers the first voice as “Ma” and says that Jiraiya must have a good reason.  But Ma tells the second voice, Pa, to shut-up.

Hermit Mode     Jiraiya refers to Ma and Pa as honoured bosses and apologizes for calling them out so suddenly.  Ma asks Jiraiya why he is using this form when he had stated in the past that

it was no good for attracting girls.  Jiraiya replies that he does not have  a choice because he is against the Rinnegan.  Both Ma and Pa get excited about the Six Ways’ eyes because they had always believed it to be a myth.  Jiraiya confirms that the Rinnegan is indeed real and asks the two to lend him power.  Jiraiya begins to emerge from the shadows in Hermit Mode.  He has two small toads perched on either shoulder, but more surprisingly, his face has transformed to resemble that of a toad.
