CHAPTER
374 - Growing into a God
Jiraiya calls Pein by his real name, Nagato, and tells him
he has changed. Pein ignores his comment and proceeds with a
summoning jutsu. A large summoning symbol appears on the wall
behind him and releases a giant crayfish in a surge of water.
The crayfish fires a fast stream of bubbles from its mouth.
Jiraiya dodges the flood of bubbles but realizes it wasn’t
meant as an attack. The bubbles envelop Konan and washes the
oil from her body. Jiraiya gives his former student credit
for remembering his weaknesses.
Pein tells Konan to get
back and commands the
crayfish to attack again. The giant creature leaps out of the
layer of foam that was concealing it and lunges at Jiraiya who has
taken refuge on the opposite wall. Jiraiya activates his Wild
Lion’s Mane technique, causing his spiky white hair to expand
and wrap itself around the crayfish and its appendages. With
a stomp of his foot, Jiraiya uses his hair to tear Pein’s
summon into pieces.
However, Jiraiya is not finished yet and shoots
his mass of hair at Pein in the shape of a lion’s
maw. Jiraiya lands a direct hit on his target and traps Pein
in the hair. He asks the immobilized Pein what had happened
to Yahiko. Pein comments that he does remember vaguely a
person by that name. But adds that Yahiko has been dead for a
long time now. Jiraiya cannot believe that this is the same
person who had once said that all he wanted to do was to keep his
friends safe. Jiraiya asks Pein what had happened to him to
make him change so much. Pein replies that nothing happened
and that this is just another fight like all the others. He
tells Jiraiya that many people have died in this country, but their
pain is what helped him grow up. Jiraiya asks Pein what he is
talking about. Pein explains that even the most innocent
child will grow up as they learn what true pain feels like.
Pain will affect how they think and talk, eventually turning them into
adults. Jiraiya asks him if he believes abandoning the love
of his friends is the path to becoming an adult. Pein tells
Jiraiya that he can’t understand because he is just a normal
person. He claims that having lived at the center of a
universe of pain
have helped him evolve beyond that of a normal
human. Pein believes he has grown into a god.
