MenuCHAPTER 373 - The Student-and-Teacher Era
Jiraiya cannot believe what he is seeing before him, but the
ripple patterns of Nagato’s eyes are unmistakable.
Jiraiya knows without question that the young boy in front of him
possesses the most powerful of the three great eye techniques: the
Rinnegan (Metempsychosis Eyes). Legend says that the great
Sage of the Six Paths possessed the Rinnegan. The Sage was
the creator of ninjutsu and thus the father of all modern
shinobi. The Rinnegan was said to grant its user god-like
abilities and can either be used to bring salvation to the world or
turn it into ashes. Jiraiya had always believed it to be a
myth, but the eyes before him were without a doubt the Rinnegan. Konan
helps Nagato to his feet and they all head home. Jiraiya does
not say anything to Nagato regarding his bloodline ability.
Some days later, Jiraiya has his three pupils line up
outside and
informs them that he is willing to teach them ninjutsu; Yahiko
is
ecstatic. Jiraiya explains that he reconsidered after the
incident with the Rock ninja. Since the children will
inevitably face more dangers in the future, Jiraiya believes it is
prudent to teach them some ninjutsu so they can at least protect
themselves. Jiraiya notices that Nagato seems concerned after
hearing his announcement. Yahiko turns to Nagato and thanks
him for saving him back then. He promises to stop calling
Nagato a weakling and to return the favor next time they are in
trouble. Konan reminds Yahiko that Nagato is
actually
stronger than him. Yahiko pledges to train hard and grow
strong too. Jiraiya then begins their first lesson in
ninjustu: learning how to mold chakra. Everyone is sound asleep
after a long day’s
training. Jiraiya is awakened by the sound of sobs and finds
Nagato missing from his bedroll. Jiraiya finds the young boy
crying by himself outside by the doorstep. He sits down
besides Nagato and asks him if it’s the events of the other
day that are troubling him. Nagato explains that he became
really angry when he saw the Rock ninja hurt Yahiko. It was
then that he lost control of his mind and went completely
berserk. When he came to his senses again, Nagato found the
Rock ninja dead on the ground. Then a terrible fear overcame
him as he realized he lost had done something
horrible.
Nagato hates himself for killing the Rock ninja and thinks there had to
be another way. Jiraiya comforts him but says he
can’t say what he did was right or wrong. But he
tells Nagato that what he does know is that his actions that day saved
Yahiko’s life - and that is definitely the right thing to
do. He tells Nagato that it is natural to feel anger when
you’re hurt; the odd thing is when
you hurt someone, not only
do you gain their hatred, but you also have to live with the guilt left
inside yourself. Ironically, it is the pain of self-guilt
which allows humans to show kindness to each other. Nagato is a bit confused and asks Jiraiya what he is supposed to do then. Jiraiya’s answer is simple: grow up. He explains that growing up means learning to form your own conclusions on the right course of action. Nagato mentions that Yahiko saved Konan and himself when they were
starving. Even when all he and Konan could do was cry, Yahiko
went out and stole food for their sake. Nagato tells Jiraiya
that all he wants to do is look after his friends the way they did for
him, no matter what pain lies ahead in the future. Jiraiya is pleased
with Nagato’s answer and smiles. After three years of training, Yahiko, Konan and Nagato have all progressed greatly in their ninjutsu skills. During a practice session, all three of them combine their power to take on Jiraiya. First, Yahiko fires a Water based ninjutsu called Violent Water Wave (Mizurappa). Jiraiya quickly dodges it but Konan immediately follows up with her Paper Shurikens. Nagato acts as her support and uses a Wind technique: Violent Wind Palm (Reppuushou) to supercharge the shurikens’ speed. They strike Jiraiya directly in the chest and he disappears in a puff of smoke. The real Jiraiya, watching from the sideline,
applauds his students for having progressed to the point
where they can take down his Shadow Clone. But he surprises
the children when he tells them that he thinks he can return to
Konoha without worrying about them anymore. Yahiko
looks like
he’s about to cry. Jiraiya jokes that he should
hold his tears unless he wants to be called a weakling.
Jiraiya turns to Konan and tells her she will be a real beauty when she
grows up, but then jokes that they should meet up when she’s
older. He advises the children that their country is still
poverty stricken and that there will be tough times ahead; Jiraiya
believes it is up to them to change things. Before leaving,
Jiraiya tells Nagato that he believes all of them have grown up and
will make the right decisions for themselves in the future.
Nagato thanks Jiraiya and bids him farewell. The flash back ends and we return to the present. Jiraiya tells Konan that he had heard about their names now and then some years after he had left. Jiraiya had heard they had gained a fierce reputation for themselves through many battles, but had all died not long after. Konan tells Jiraiya that he knows nothing about what they had gone through after he left. Jiraiya admits that
he does not, but says what he does know about are the activities of
Akatsuki. A voice from above informs Jiraiya that their
actions are of their own decisions.Jiraiya looks above and sees the figure of Pein staring down at him. Even though he looks completely different, Jiraiya knows from the eyes that the person known as Pein is actually Nagato. He tells Pein that he is disappointed by the kind of man he had grown into and asks Pein what had happened. Pein replies that there is no need for Jiraiya to know because he is nothing more than an outsider to him now. Thanks for Reading. Join in the discussion here: >>Blog Entry & Discussion
