MenuCHAPTER 372 - A Country in Tears
Konan maintains her emotionless gaze at Jiraiya while she
reassembles her body by gathering pieces of paper. Jiraiya
says that he had believed her to be dead. The Rain ninja, now
free of Jiraiya’s Toad Silhouette jutsu, calls Konan an
angel. Jiraiya scoffs at the idea, and guesses that Konan
must be this “god”’s messenger.
The Rain ninja rushes over to Konan and asks her for help.
Konan tells him to leave and the ninja immediately complies. Now alone, Jiraiya asks
Konan to tell him who Pein is. Konan replies that it is none of
Jiraiya’s business, but refers to him as
‘sensei.’ She then forms large
angel wings from paper and soars into the air. Jiraiya asks
if she really thinks she is an angel. Konan ignores his
comment and tells him it is “god”’s order
that he must die. She then launches a bevy of sharp paper projectiles down at Jiraiya, but her
target has no problem rolling out of harm’s way.
Jiraiya counterattacks by gathering oil in his mouth and spitting it up
at Konan. While Konan’s papers are stuck together
by the sticky goo, Jiraiya further immobilizes her by extending his
spiky hair to bind her in a tight grip. He comments that
Konan always did like origami and was always such a gentle
girl. Jiraiya presumes that the rumors he heard about the
deaths of the “other two” were false as
well, and asks Konan to tell him the truth. When Konan
remains silent, Jiraiya asks her which one of them is Pein.
Konan continues to refuse to answer and instead asks Jiraiya why he
came looking for them after all these years. Jiraiya tells
her that he came looking for Akatsuki, but never would have imagined he
would find Konan as one of its members. Konan tells Jiraiya
that she knows he must be regretting saving them back
then, but adds that it is too late now because they act to make
“his” ideals into reality. Jiraiya
concludes that Pein must be “him.”In a flashback sequence, Jiraiya remembers the time when he met the three kids in the Country of Rain. It was during the Great Ninja Wars when Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru still worked as a
team and had been assigned a mission inside the Rain Country.
During a break, a dirty looking boy named Yahiko walks up to them
asking for some food. After Jiraiya learned his parents were
killed in the war, he offers him some of his bread. Seeing
that the Leaf ninja were friendly, the boy calls out his friends in
hiding: Nagato and Konan. Jiraiya and the others end up
giving the war orphans more of their food, but they continue to follow
them. Tsunade finally has had enough and asks what else they
want. Yahiko replies that they want to learn some
ninjutsu. Konan makes an elegant paper rose from the bread
wrapping paper and offers it to Jiraiya as
thanks. However, Orochimaru is not empathetic in the least and
suggests that he should kill the children. He bases his
reason on having seen the pitiful lives war orphans live; Orochimaru
believes it is better to end their lives now for their own
good. Jiraiya tells Orochimaru to stop scaring the kids and,
to everyone’s surprise, offers to stay behind and take care
of the children until they can fend for themselves. Jiraiya
reasons that it is the least he can do as atonement for his past
actions. Later, inside a small
house, Jiraiya has prepared dinner for the children by grilling a fish
he caught with Fire jutsu. Yahiko is happy and tells Jiraiya
he has gotten the hang of fishing. The quiet boy named Nagato
remains silent, but then begins to cry. When asked what was
wrong, Nagato replies that he misses his family. Yahiko yells at him and tells
him to be strong; otherwise people will continue to think the men of
Amegakure (Rain village) are weak. Jiraiya tries to console
the children by telling them that the war won’t continue for
long. He believes that by the time they grow up, the great
countries would be stabilized and there would be peace. But
Yahiko won’t accept it because it won’t
bring back their families. He wants the people who killed
their loved ones to go through the same suffering they did so that
maybe then they will stop the fighting. But Yahiko also
realizes it will never happen, and that is why he thinks wars will
never end. He complains that it is always raining in this country, as
if it is constantly crying. Yahiko vows that he will change
his country someday so that everyone will always be safe.
That is why he wants Jiraiya to teach him and his friends ninjutsu. Some time later, Jiraiya is
reflecting on what Yahiko had said earlier when Kanon rushes in through
the door in a panic. She says that something has happened to
Yahiko and Nagato. Jiraiya immediately tells her to take him to
them. Upon arriving at the scene, Jiraiya finds a badly
beaten Nagato and Yahiko on the ground beside a dead Rock
shinobi. Yahiko tells Jiraiya that the ninja demanded food
and money, but it was Nagato who defeated him. Jiraiya can
tell that the Rock ninja was a chuunin rank, far above anything the
children can handle. But then he looks at Nagato’s
eyes and suddenly realizes the boy’s heritage. Thanks for Reading. Join in the discussion here: >>Blog Entry & Discussion
