MenuCHAPTER 324 - Shikamaru's Analysis  Kakuzu looks on as the
battle continues between
his partner Hidan and the Konoha shinobi named Asuma that he notes as
being worth 35 million ryou in the underground. Everyone on
Asuma’s team is confused as to how Asuma received burns when
it was Hidan who got hit by the attack. Hidan reaches into his cloak and pulls out a long black spike. He declares that the preparations are set and that Asuma should prepare to endure a lot of pain. Asuma doesn’t reply and firmly grips his trench knife in his uninjured hand. Asuma gathers a substantial amount of his chakra into the knife so that the chakra blade extends several feet, essentially turning the knife into a sword. Hidan watches in surprise as Asuma makes a direct charge at him.  Hidan reacts
by raising the long spike and stabbing it through his left
leg. Asuma suddenly drops to the ground in pain, his hand
covering the exact spot on his leg corresponding the where
Hidan’s leg was punctured. Hidan laughs loudly and
tells Asuma that the pain is nothing compared to what he’ll
feel if he gets hit in a vital spot. Shikamaru and the others
quickly analyze what has
happened and realize that the curse Hidan was talking about must
connect their bodies somehow. Asuma has come to this same
conclusion as well, and realizes he is at a huge advantage because
Hidan appears to be invulnerable. Hidan pulls the spike out
of his leg and points it towards his chest; he asks Asuma if he wishes
for more pain or a quick death. Seeing that Asuma’s
life is on the brink, Izumo yells at Shikamaru to quickly use his
Shadow Bind jutsu to stop Hidan. Shikamaru’s shadow
strand rushes towards Hidan as he begins to thrust the spike into his
own heart. The spike slightly punctures his chest, but
Skikamaru’s shadow made it in time to immobilize Hidan before
he can progress any further. Hidan struggles against the shadow binding him, causing them to recede; Shikamaru has to concentrate even harder to maintain his jutsu. Kotetsu asks Izumo when their back-up can arrive. Since they called for reinforcements ten minutes ago, Izumo estimates it will be at least  twenty minutes more before help can
arrive. Everyone on the team wants to do something to save
Asuma; normally they would target the opponent to stop the jutsu, but
this time if they kill Hidan they will kill Asuma as well.
Kakuzu gets impatient and tells Hidan if this situation drags on, he
will join in too because he doesn’t want such a large bounty
to get away. Hidan yells back at Kakuzu to not interfere
because he can handle it on his own. Shikamaru knows with an
opponent as strong as
Hidan, the Shadow Bind jutsu won’t last for much
longer. He calms himself down and begins a careful analysis
of Hidan, including his speech, expression patterns and
behavior. With these he hopes to find some kind of
restriction or loophole in Hidan’s jutsu. Shikamaru
places his fingers in a special position and focuses on all the
ritualistic terms Hidan has been spouting and comes up with a
solution. In an instant, Shikamaru has the ability to think
out and analysis two hundred possible moves for the situation at
hand. On top of that, he possesses a sixth sense that allows
him to choose the best move out of all the possibilities. By
the expression on Shikamaru’s face, Asuma already knows his
student has come up with something.
