MenuCHAPTER 316 - The Training Begins  Kakashi tells Naruto that
his Wind element
based chakra is very useful in battles because it can be used to cut
and sever. Naruto becomes excited but Kakashi reminds him
that he
still needs a lot of training before he can master his
chakra’s
potential. Then something occurs to Naruto, what element is Yamato’s Wood based jutsus? Kakashi thinks a demonstration is best and whispers something into Yamato’s ear. Yamato complies and first performs an Earth based jutsu: Earthen Rampart (Doton: Doryuu  Jouheki) which causes the ground below him to
rise
several stories into the air. Next, he follows up with the
Water
based jutsu: Waterfall Basin (Suiton: Takitsubo) which flows from the
rampart to create a waterfall.Kakashi explains that Jonins typically have at least two types of  chakra
elements at their disposal. Yamato can control
both Earth and Water based chakra, but his Wood element jutsus are
something different. Technically, there is no such thing as
Wood
based chakra, but Yamato is able to create the effect by releasing both
Earth and Water chakra  simultaneously.
Yamato demonstrates this
by combining the two chakra types in his hands and creating a large
group of trees from the cliffs surrounding the waterfall. But
this not something any normal ninja can do, it is what is called a
Bloodline Limit ability. Kakashi brings up the example of
Haku,
who controlled both Wind and Water elements to create Ice.
Not
even Kakashi’s Sharingan can not copy a
Bloodline Limit ability.Naruto becomes more inquisitive and begins to ask about Shikamaru’s Shadow Copy jutsu, Choji’s Multi-size jutsu and even medical ninjutsu and genjutsu. Yamato suggests they should postpone the explanation about “quality control” and “yin”  (dark) and “yang” (light)
energy for
later, so they can begin their training. Kakashi agrees and
gets
Naruto on the first step to improve the quality control of his Wind
based chakra. He tells Naruto to place a leaf in his palm and
try
to cut it in half with only his chakra. Naruto will also need
to
attempt this while using his Mass Shadow Clone Replication
technique. When Naruto asks how many he should create,
Kakashi
points to the tree behind him and suggests one clone for every leaf.At a quiet location, Shikamaru sits down with his sensei, Asuma, for a game of Shogi (Japanese chess). Shikamaru is surprised when Asuma makes an offensive move early in the game because like himself, Asuma doesn’t normally favor risky maneuvers. Asuma responds by saying  sometimes
one needs to make sacrifices to protect
the king. Shikamaru thinks Asuma is acting strangely, but he
replies that he has finally begun to understand the importance of the
“king.” Asuma  sees Shikamaru as a knight piece
because although he doesn’t possessive much strength, he is a
flexible thinker that can move forward in any situation. When
Shikamaru asks what piece Asuma represents, his sensei says he is just
a simple sacrificial piece on the board. In turn, Asuma asks
his
student who he thinks the “king” is.
Shikamaru
assumes it’s the Hokage, but Asuma says that it’s
actually
not and that he’ll find out who it actually is when the right
time comes. Back at the training ground, the tree has been stripped bare of its leaves. On the ground in every direction, countless numbers of Naruto clones all attempt to cut their leaf in half with chakra. The training is already showing progress because, ahead of Kakashi’s expectations, one clone has managed to make a minor incision into his leaf.
