Kakashi divulges that the secret to shortening
Naruto’s
training time is to use his Mass Shadow Clone technique.
Naruto
is confused and asks Kakashi to explain it to him simply. The
Shadow Clone (Kage Bunshin) jutsu is different  from
regular Clone (Bunshin) jutsu in that instead of creating just an
illusionary copy, the user creates actual bodies. The jutsu
was
originally intended for scouting dangerous places and spying in enemy
territory. It has its advantages and disadvantages, but since
it
is one of Naruto’s favorite moves, Kakashi assumes he has
noticed
one of its important effects. When the Shadow Clone jutsu is
undone, all the experience gained from the clones adds up to become the
original’s experience as well.Naruto gives Kakashi a blank look and says he doesn’t get it. It is obvious Naruto has 
not noticed this effect yet, so Kakashi attempts to make it clearer by
doing a demonstration. Kakashi and Naruto both make a Shadow
Clone, which are then sent into the woods so they are out of
sight. Once there, they play a game of
rock-paper-scissors.
Naruto wins the game, then the jutsu is released and the clones
vanish. Immediately, the original Naruto receives the
information
about what his clone  was
doing and he finally begins to understand. However, Naruto
still
can’t make the connection between his Mass Shadow Clone
technique
and reducing his training time. Kakashi sighs while thinking
how
Jiraiya managed to teach such a dense guy the Rasengan.Kakashi explains to Naruto that if he created a Shadow Clone 
and both of them do the same training, then he will gain twice the
experience. In other words, the amount of training time would
be
reduced by half. If there were three of them, it would take
only
one-third the time. And with 1000, it  would
be cut down to one-thousandth the time. With this method of
training, something which may take twenty years to develop may be
accomplished in a week with a thousand clones. Naruto catches
on
and becomes excited at Kakashi’s great plan. He
asks
Kakashi if he became strong by doing this type of training, but Kakashi
replies he has never tried it. The reason is that the Shadow
Clone technique divides chakra evenly amongst all the clones, so it is
not suitable for people with small chakra reserves like
Kakashi.
Kakashi tells Naruto that he has at least twice the chakra than
himself. And if Yamato does not suppress Kyuubi’s
chakra,
it could grow a hundred fold. Coincidentally, Yamato then
shows
up and tells Naruto that Kakashi has asked him to assist with his
training. The next topic Kakashi begins to cover is the manipulation of the nature of chakra. There are five primary natures of chakra: Fire, Wind, Water, Lightning and Earth. It is from these elements that the five great countries derive their names and they are also the basis for all ninjutsu. Yamato adds that people generally have chakra that fits into one of the five categories. The Uchiha clan was famous for their Fire Element (Katon) techniques because they had  fire
based chakra. But since Chidori is a Lightning Element
(Raiton)
technique, this meant that Sasuke has control over both fire and
lightning nature chakra. Kakashi notes that, surprisingly,
they
still don’t know Naruto’s chakra nature.
He pulls out
a few pieces of paper and claims they can easily check using
them. Kakashi holds one piece between his fingers and it
suddenly
creases and crumples. He explains that the papers are made
from
trees raised with chakra, so they easily react to it. If a
person
has wind natured chakra, the paper would be sliced; for fire, it burns;
for water, it dampens; for earth, the paper crumbles. Kakashi
hands Naruto a piece and asks him to channel some chakra into it.
Naruto does as he’s told and turns around to reveal that his
paper has split in two. Kakashi tells him they will now
commence
his wind nature chakra manipulation training.
