MenuCHAPTER 307 - At a Whim 
Sasuke’s face remains indifferent after seeing
Naruto. He asks Naruto whether Kakashi came as
well. Yamato
steps forward and informs Sasuke that he is here in Kakashi’s
place, and that the new Team Kakashi
will be taking him back to Konoha. Sai draws his weapon.
Sakura
fears Sai is going to complete his mission to kill Sasuke, but Sai does
not attack. Sasuke looks down at Sai and calls him another
loser
on Team Kakashi.Sai explains to Naruto and the others that his orders to assassinate Sasuke  don’t
matter to him anymore. For the first time, he will act for
himself. He wants to protect the bonds between Sasuke and
Naruto
at all cost because it may allow him to remember the emotions he had
lost. He tells Sasuke that the reason Naruto and Sakura have
chased after him for so long is because they want to protect the
bonds they share with them. Sai admits that although he
himself
does not yet fully understand these feelings, Sasuke should understand
them very well.Sasuke responds that of course he knew, but that was why he severed those bonds. He has other bonds he must carry, namely the fraternal bond with Itachi that was forged through hate. Sasuke claims that  having
too many bonds causes one to lose focus of their greatest
desire.
Naruto becomes emotional from hearing Sasuke’s
words. He
asks Sasuke if indeed he wanted to sever all bonds, why
didn’t he
kill him after their last battle three years ago? Sasuke
coldly
responds that it wasn’t that he couldn’t kill
Naruto, but
because he simply wanted to defy his brother. Itachi had once
told Sasuke that the only path for him to attain the Mangekyou
Sharingan and defeat him is by murdering his closest friend.
Sasuke tells Naruto that he spared his life on nothing more than a whim. In a blink of an eye, Sasuke suddenly appears besides Naruto, his incredible speed catches everyone by surprise. With one arm on Naruto shoulder, Sasuke tells him that he had wasted his time searching for him all these years; Naruto would have been better off training to become a Hokage one day. He informs Naruto that he had spared his life last time, but this time he will kill Naruto simply on a whim of his. Sasuke draws a long, hilt-less sword from the sheath strapped to his back. Naruto remains motionless and simply asks Sasuke how can someone hope to become Hokage if he can’t even save his friend?
