CHAPTER 303 - Sai's Betrayal

Now talk    Sai confesses that in order to destroy Konoha, he was ordered to gain Orochimaru’s trust and form an alliance with him.  But that’s not the whole story, Sai’s mission was also to secretly collect and transmit information onSai's special ability Orochimaru to Danzou.  Once Konoha is destroyed, Danzou knew Orochimaru will betray them, so Sai was to gather enough data in order to stay on step ahead of him.  Sakura questions why Sai alone was to take on such a dangerous mission.  Sai explains that it was because of his special ability. The ink he writes with can become living animals; these creatures are able to protect themselves and carry information to a target destination.

Sai's book    Sakura then asks him if he realizes that countless people will die if a battle in Konoha broke out again, but Sai shrugs it off and states he is only following orders.  “Sai” is only his code name, in reality he is nobody; his sole existence is to be no more than a tool for Danzou.  Sakura pauses, but then asks Sai why he cares so much about that story book if he believes his existence is sobonds are important meaningless.  She guesses that the two boys on the cover are Sai and his brother, and that Sai carries it with him because it is the only thing left that proves he exists.  Despite what Sai had said in the past, even for shinobi, eliminating all emotions completely is impossible.  Sai asks Sakura to explain how carrying around the book serves to prove his existence.  You killed himSakura tells him that the book represents the bonds between Sai and his brother, and that Sai refuses to let go because these bonds are very important to him.  Sakura’s words seem to resonate with Sai and he appears to finally understand.

Yamato informs Sai that they took a peek into the book.  The center page is the only one left unfinished but based on the rest of the book, Yamato surmises that Sai and his brother would end up fighting each other in those pages.  Yamato knows that Danzou has given special training for Roots members in order to strip them of their emotions.  The training is identical to the forsaken tradition once practiced in the Village of the Bloody Mist, Kirigakure, where young initiates were ordered to fight each other to the death in order to advance.  Yamato is suggesting Sai is the one who killed his brother, but Sai refutes the claim.  The story book was a present Sai had intended to give to his brother, but he died of illness before Sai could finish.  While they were not related by blood, they formed a bond while not heregrowing up together in Roots since neither of them had any other family members.  The picture in the center was the one he wanted to show to his brother the most, but after his death Sai can’t seem to remember what he planned on drawing in those pages.

Kabuto returns to Sai’s room and unlocks the door, but finds the room empty.  Everyone had already moved back to the surface.  Yamato has Sai bound and assigns a clone to watch him.  Naruto is ready to get back and rescue Sasuke, but Sai suggests they give up now.  He tells Naruto that even though if he thinks of Sasuke like a brother, the current Sasuke doesn’t even care about Naruto or Konoha anymore.  Is it really worth it to take on Orochimaru for suchSasuke's my friend a person?

Naruto smiles and reveals that Sasuke was the person, that more than anyone else, accepted his existence.  Sasuke represents the bonds Naruto has wanted to form his entire life. And in order to save those bonds, Naruto is willing to take on Orochimaru no matter what the odds are.
