MenuCHAPTER 241 - Kakashi Gaiden Part 3: A True Hero
After hearing about the story of Kakashi’s father,
Obito is quiet for the rest of the night. In the morning, Rin
checks on Kakashi’s wound and tells him it is mostly healed
but will reopen if he overdoes it. Minato tells the team to
get ready and everyone picks up their gear to set off again. They stop inside a bamboo forest where Minato
informs everyone that they will now be separating and for everyone to
do their best on the mission. He warns the young shinobis
that they will likely encounter team battles from now on and that it
was only by luck that they encountered the Rock ninja
scouting alone
the previous day. To everyone’s surprise, it is
Obito who voices out that they should get going with their
mission. Minato smiles in agreement and orders everyone to
scatter. Kakashi, Obito and Rin make
quick progress
through the forest, avoiding pit traps and taking short
breaks. They eventually reach a small pond and begin crossing
it by using chakra to walk across its surface. On the
opposite bank, two Rock ninjas observe them from concealment.
One of them comments that their teammate Mihiru still hasn’t
returned from his scouting mission yet, but doesn’t believe
he could have been done in by these brats from Konoha. His
partner suggests that they should ask and proceeds to use the Hiding
Camouflage technique to turn invisible. Kakashi is leading the
group but suddenly senses
something and sniffs at the air. He raises his hand to signal
everyone to be on alert. Immediately, several bamboo trunks
are flung at them from afar. Obito sees them coming and uses
Katon: Great Fireball to char them in mid-air. However, that
attack was only a distraction and the Rock ninja in concealment has
already snuck up behind Rin. The second Rock ninja continues
the attack and leaps down upon Kakashi and Obito with two blades
drawn. Kakashi pulls out a kunai and engages the Rock ninja
in combat. However, a sharp scream from
Rin catches both
Obito and Kakashi’s attention. Behind them, the
concealed Rock ninja has an unconscious Rin in his clutches.
He tells Obito and Kakashi that they will be looking after her for now
and then disappears in an explosion of smoke with his partner.Obito immediately begins charging after them in the direction of the smoke cloud, but Kakashi orders him to stop. Obito demands to know why but Kakashi only coldly replies that the two of them will resume the mission. Obito doesn’t want to abandon Rin but Kakashi reasons that the
enemy won’t kill her yet because they want to know the aim of
their mission. Also, Kakashi points out that since Rin is a
medical ninja, she will be treated well as long as she tends to the
enemy’s casualties. He explains that once the enemy
discovers that their target is the bridge, they will
be prepared for an
attack and make the mission too difficult to complete. That
is why they must hurry and destroy the bridge first and look for Rin
later. Obito strongly objects to Kakashi’s plan and
tells him that he hasn’t considered Rin’s safety in
the case where her kidnappers do not obey the normal rules of
the
battlefield.Kakashi calmly tells Obito that sometimes it is necessary for a shinobi to sacrifice companions for the sake of the mission’s success - it is a shinobi law. If they fail the mission, then the war will continue, resulting in more deaths and sacrifices. Obito yells at Kakashi that all he has been saying are all based speculation. He can’t believe Kakashi is willing to abandon Rin, a companion who has saved them countless times with her medical ninjutsu. Kakashi remains unmoved and replies that all of Rin’s actions in the past were just part of her duty. Obito knocks Kakashi to the ground with a fast punch to the head. He screams at Kakashi that he cannot stand
listening to him. Kakashi still maintains his composure and
says that whether Obito hates him or not, he is still the leader and
Obito must obey his instructions. Obito grabs Kakashi by the
collar and tells Kakashi that as the leader, he should use his strength
and power to rescue Rin. Kakashi warns Obito not to let his
emotions control him or he will fail the mission. He reminds Obito that
shinobis are taught to kill their emotions because they will
hinder
them on a mission. Obito mentions that Rin gave a special
medical pack to Kakashi out of concern and even sewed a charm
into
it. But Kakashi only sees medical ninjutsu and medical packs
as ways to increase the success rate of the mission, nothing more.Kakashi reiterates to Obito that a shinobi’s duty is to become a tool in order to complete a mission; to a shinobi, emotions are unnecessary things. Obito is stunned by Kakashi’s words and asks if
he seriously means
that. Kakashi shifts his eyes away for a second and thinks of
his father and then of himself. He looks at Obito directly
and tells him it is really what he believes.Obito has had enough. He and Kakashi have not gotten along since the very beginning. He tells Kakashi that he will go rescue Rin himself and walks away.
Kakashi begins to tell him that he doesn’t understand what
happens to those who don’t follow the shinobi
rules. Obito cuts him off and states that he believes the
White Fang, Kakashi’s father, was a true hero.
Kakashi is caught off guard by Obito’s words and is unsure
what to say. Obito comments that he knows that those shinobi
who break the rules are called trash, but he adds that those who
abandon their companions are even worse trash. He tells
Kakashi that even if he becomes trash, he will break the rules to
rescue Rin. And if that is not the actions of a true ninja,
then he will crush the old way of the ninja.
