Menu CHAPTER 239 - Kakashi Gaiden Part 1: Mission Start 
Around ten years ago, the five great shinobi countries were
in
turmoil, leading to an era of uncertainty and constant skirmishes at
the borders of each country. This war was later to be called
the
Third Secret Ninja War. The prolonged nature of the war took
its
toll on every shinobi village. The once great Fire Country
lost
much of its former power during this period. Konoha, being
the
primary military power for the country, lost many of its loyal shinobi
in the wars. This forced the village to look more and more to
its
young recruits to fill the frontlines as shinobi soldiers.
A young boy ninja from Konoha races franticly
through the
forest tree tops. He worries that if he doesn’t
hurry,
he’ll be killed. He loses focus and trips on a
branch,
causing him to fall and tumble into a clearing. A figure
looms
over him. A young 13 year old Kakashi Hatake tells the boy he
is
late and refers to him as his teammate, Obito Uchiha.  Kakashi
lectures to Obito that as a full-fledged ninja, he should strictly
follow all the rules as he was trained to. Obito explains
that he
had to help an old woman carry her luggage and also has something in
his eye, but Kakashi calls him a liar. Their sensei, Minato
Kamikaze, tells Kakashi to cut Obito some slack. Kakashi
exclaims
that those shinobi who do not follow rules and regulations are trash,
clear and simple. Obito, after applying some eye drops, tells
Kakashi he is always going on about rules and stuff and has no kindness
in him. Rin, a kunoichi and the third teammate asks both to
stop
fighting since they are on the same team. Kakashi
tells Rin
she is too soft on Obito. He adds that it is a very important
day
for him, but Obito seems to have forgotten all about it.
Later, as Team Minato travels through grassy
hills,
Minato explains that today is Kakashi’s official inauguration
as
a Jonin shinobi, like himself. Because Konoha’s
military
power has suffered severely from the war, their team will be
split so that Minato can take on missions by himself. Kakashi
will be the new leader of their remaining three-man team. Rin
reminds Obito that she told everyone to give Kakashi a present, but
Obito claims he wasn’t listening at the time.
Minato
presents Kakashi with an odd-looking kunai with an inscription on its
handle. Rin gives Kakashi a special medical bag.
Kakashi
then turns to Obito with an open palm as if expecting his present
next. Obito tells Kakashi that he got him absolutely
nothing. Kakashi replies that it’s fine but asks
Obito to
carry his stuff for him to compensate. Obito blows a gasket
and
tells Kakashi it’s a mystery how he was ever selected to be
Jonin. He declares to Kakashi that he will surpass him
someday
because he is of the Uchiha clan and will soon awaken his
Sharingan. Kakashi comments that he always thought the
members of
the Uchiha clan are all elite ninjas, but Obito seems to be the
exception. Rin once again comes in to defuse their quarrel,
but
then Minato tells them they are close to the country’s border
and
he needs to explain to them their mission. Minato lays out a map, points and explains that Earth Country is currently invading the Hidden Village in the Grass. The enemy are, of course, Rock ninja and word is that a thousand of them have already gathered at the frontlines. The concern is that since Fire Country also borders Grass Country, the Rock Country’s aggressive advance will  eventually bring them to their
country’s
borders. Rin comments that based on the formation of the
advance,
it is likely their rear support would be strong as well.
Minato
points to a bridge on the map and explains that it is their
mission. The Konoha ninja will attack the enemy frontlines in
large numbers, but before that a few small teams must infiltrate and
sabotage the enemy‘s supply routes; this will be Team
Kakashi’s first mission. Kakshi must lead Rin and
Obito in
a mission to sneak behind enemy lines, destroy the bridge to cut off
enemy supplies and then withdraw quickly. Obito asks Minato
what
his role will be. Minato explains that he will attack the
frontlines directly and distract the Rock ninja’s attention
away
from Kakashi’s team. He will go with them to the
border,
but from then on Kakashi becomes the leader and the mission will be in
his hands.
Some time later, the four Konoha ninja walk
through a
strange forest of mushroom-like trees with Kakashi taking
point.
They are quickly approaching the border when Kakashi senses something
and tells everyone to halt with a hand signal. Hidden in one
of
the trees, a Rock ninja peers over at the four. He commends
the
young ninja leading them for detecting him so early. But he
is
immediately alerted when he spots Minato, however he is unsure if it is
the person he was warned about.With his fingers held to the ground, Kakashi determines that their enemy is alone. But Minato cautions him because he senses about 20 enemies and notes they are possibly Shadow Clones. Kakashi agrees and asks Minato to cover him while he heads in first. Minato tells Kakashi not to be so hasty; since he is the leader, it would be better if he was the backup. Kakashi replies that since he has become the leader today, it is an excellent opportunity for him to try out his new jutsu. Kakashi hold out his right hand and supports it with his left. Electrical current begins to be generated from his hand as Kakashi activates the Chidori. Even his teammates are in awe of the amazing jutsu, Kakshi is already rushing forward to engage the enemy.
