CHAPTER
019 - The Symbol of Courage
Sakura wakes up to the loud construction of Tazuna's bridge. At the
work site, he asks her why she is all by herself. She claims that
because of her superiority in chakra control, they have to train, while
Kakashi left it to her to protect Tazuna. A bridge worker named Giichi
asks Tazuna if he can stop working on the bridge. By
Tazuna's response,
this isn't the first person scared of helping him with
the bridge.
Giichi's reason for quiting is simply fear of getting attacked
by
Gatou. Tazuna however will not be persuaded to stop so easily, claiming
that this bridge is what their poor country needs to bring in
resources. He decides to stop working on the bridge for the day, and
tells Giichi he doesn't have to continue if he wishes.
In a nearby village
in the Land of Waves, Tazuna
tells Sakura they
have to stop at the store to get some food before returning home. At
the store there is hardly and food for sale. A man brushes by Sakura to
try to steal her purse,
grabbing her butt in the process. She mistakes him for a pervert and
round-house kicks him right in
the face, knocking him out. After leaving the store, Sakura notices
something is wrong in this city. Tazuna explains that ever since
Gatou
took over, all adults have lost hope, which is why the bridge is so
important, as a symbol of courage to restore hope among the people.
Back at the
training site, Naruto and Sasuke are
still running up the
trees. Naruto is making good progress, with the kunai marks on the tree
growing higher and higher each time, but still, he notices
Sasuke is
progressing much better than himself. From Sasuke's point of view
though, Naruto is catching up to him way too fast. Naruto flashes back
to when Sakura gave him some tips on chakra control. She told him that
he must not get too excited, and to channel chakra in his feet, he must
focus on the tree. Naruto begins to channel his chakra, when Sasuke
shouts his name out. Naruto is interested in why Sasuke would possibly
want to talk to him. Sasuke asks Naruto what Sakura taught him, but
Naruto refuses to share.
Later that day,
everyone is eating at Tazuna's
house. It seems Naruto
and Sasuke have subconsciously entered themselves into an eating
competition with one another, in hopes of getting stronger. Sakura asks
about a picture on the wall Inari was staring at with somebody
purposely torn out of it. Inari's mother tells her it is her husband.
Tazuna says he was called the hero of the village. Inari leaves the
dinner table abruptly. Inari's mother snaps at Tazuna for speaking of
him in front of Inari.
Tazuna explains that he was not Inari's real
father, but they were so
close, it was as if they were. Inari was much different back then,
laughing all the time. But all that changed after the incident with his
father...
