CHAPTER 009 - The Worst Client

Deep inside a forest, Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura prepare to ambush their target.  Kakashi gives the okay for everyone to attack.  Naruto leads the charge and captures the target… a cat.  Kakashi announces that they’ve completed their mission and they return to Konoha to return the cat, “Tora”, to its owner, the Fire Country’s Daimyo’s wife, Madam Shijimi.

The Hokage readies to give Team 7’s next mission; the duties include babysitting, shopping and helping dig potatoes.  Naruto has had enough of these lame missions and demands a better one.  Iruka yells at Naruto that all rookies start with simple duties and work their way up.  The Hokage explains to Naruto that the mission requests they receive everyday are broken down into A, B, C and D ranks based on difficulty.  All shinobis are also divided based on skill from the Hokage at the top, then the Jounins, then the Chunnins, then the Genins.  The missions are handed out based on ninja ability.  Genins receive C and D rank missions, Chunnins can take B and C ranks and Jounins are reserved for A rank missions.  Once a mission is complete, the client pays the fee to the village. But since Naruto and the others are only Genin, they only get D-rank missions.

Naruto argues that he isn’t the trouble making brat he used to be, so finally the Hokage relents and offers them a C rank mission to protect a client.  Naruto gets excited that it could be a princess or feudal lord, but the person who shows up is a drunken old man.  The old man is not impressed that his bodyguards will be young kids and adds that Naruto is particularly stupid looking.  He  introduces himself as Tazuna, an expert bridge builder.  He needs Team Kakashi to escort him back to his village in the Land of Waves so he can complete a bridge.

Later on at the main entrance to the village, Naruto is all hyped up about the mission.  Tzuna insults him again by doubting that Naruto has the ability to protect him.  Naruto tells Tzauna not to underestimate him and announces that he will be Hokage one day.  But Tazuna isn’t impressed and keeps on drinking his liquor.

The group begin their journey, but a pair of masked shinobis are watching them from the trees.  As they are walking, Kakashi starts talking to Tazuna about the Land of Waves.  Since Wave Country is quite small, it does not have a shinobi village.  Kakashi explains that a shinobi village is equivalent to a country’s military power.  The five most powerful shinobi villages are the Leaf, Mist, Cloud, Sand, and Stone hidden villages  Each village is lead by a Kage (Shadow), who is the most powerful ninja of that village.  For example, Konoha is led by the Hokage (Fire Shadow). Kakashi tells everyone that they won’t encounter any foreign ninjas on a C rank mission, so they don’t need to worry.  However, Sasuke notices that Tazuna still looks concerned.

As everyone pass by  a puddle on the ground, a pair of masked shinobi silently emerge from it.  One of them leaps into the air and, using a serrated chain, quickly binds Kakashi.  Both ninjas then yank on both ends of the chain to shred Kakashi’s body to pieces.   Naruto has no time to react when the two ninjas suddenly appear behind him, ready to make him their next victim.
