008 - You Fail
Iruka asks the Third Hokage about Kakashi over
lunch. The Hokage shows him a record book showing that
Kakashi has never passed any of the teams that were assigned to him.
Naruto and the others are all upset about Kakashi
telling them that they don’t deserve to be ninja.
Sasuke makes a reckless charge at Kakashi but is easily
subdued. Kakashi tells them they completely misunderstood the
purpose of why they were divided into teams for this
training. The key to passing the test was teamwork, but
everyone just worked on their own to try to get the bells.
Sakura argues that by having only two bells
available, it would naturally make them fight each other rather than
work together. Kakashi replies that
that was the purpose; it
was a test to see if the three of them can see past their own
interests
and succeed together under the circumstances. Individual
ability is important to a ninja, but can also disrupt the team and even
put lives in danger. Kakashi mock demonstrates by putting a
knife to Sasuke’s neck and telling Sakura to kill Naruto or
Sasuke dies.
Having proved his point, Kakashi releases Sasuke
and walks to he carved stone nearby, on it are names of heroes of the
village. Naruto gets excited and says he wants to get his
name on the stone to and become a hero. However, he calms
down when Kakashi tells him the names are all
heroes who died on
duty. The stone is a memorial, and Kakashi’s best
friend’s name is also carved there.
Kakashi decides to give Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke
one more chance after lunch, but Naruto doesn’t get any food
as punishment. He warns Sasuke and Sakura that if they share
their food with him, they will fail immediately. However,
after Kakashi has left, Sasuke gives part of his food to Naruto despite
Kakashi’s warning. He explains that without food,
Naruto will just hinder the team, Sakura understands and also offers
part of her lunch for Naruto.
Suddenly, Kakashi appears in a large burst of
smoke, shouting apparently in anger. The three fear rhat
they’ll get failed immediately, but instead Kakashi stops in
front of them with a smile on his face and tells them they have
passed. He tells them they are the first group to
disobey him and show signs of genuine teamwork. Those that
break the shinobi rules are trash, but those that don’t take
care of their comrades are lower than trash. Kakashi tells
them that starting tomorrow they will begin their duties as
shinobis. As everyone leaves the training grounds, Naruto is
still left tied to the post.
