Mangekyou Sharingan (Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye)

The Sharingan can evolve to the Mangekyo Sharingan (MS). To attain this power, Itachi, Madara and his unnamed brother killed their best friends. It is not clear whether Sasuke obtained the MS by the pain he experienced when his brother passed away while fighting him. It is also unclear how Kakashi developed his MS.

The MS can be activated and deactivated just like the regular Sharingan. The appearance and powers of each MS differs from user to user. In Itachi’s case, the MS gave more powerful Genjutsu abilities in the left eye, and ninjutu abilities in the right.  

Itachi’s MS especial ability where: Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi and Susanoo. With his right eye, Itachi performed Amaterasu, a Ninjutsu that created black flames which burned as hot as the sun and consumed everything it touches. With his left eye he performed Tsukuyomi, a Genjutsu that induced mental torture which can result in psychological damage.  Itachi could also use the Genjutsu to control the time perception of the target, when he used Tsukoyomi on Kakashi he tortured his body for 72 hours in his mind, but one second in real time. Itachi’s third MS technique was Susanoo. It is the summoning of the God of the Sea and Storms, or a representation of it. Susanoo could shield Itachi from any attack and it also wielded the Totsuka Sword, a weapon capable of sealing souls.

Kakashi’s only known MS technique revealed so far consists of the ability to transport a target to a different dimension or location.  However, sustaining the MS puts a great strain on his body as Kakashi is not an Uchiha.

It is said that the ultimate ability of the MS is the ability to control Kyuubi. Madara is the only person known to have had this power.

Because it is more powerful, the MS consumes more chakra than the regular Sharingan.  One of the side effects of the MS is that overuse will gradually deteriorate the user’s eyesight until he is totally blind.

Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan (Eternal Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye)

To regain his sight after the blindness caused by the MS, a user needs to transplant new eyes from a sibling or fellow Uchiha clansman. Madara, after losing his sight, took his brother’s eyes and transplanted.   The transplant was apparently done without removing the original eyes.. through this process, Madara not only regained his sight but also obtained the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan – which unlocked new unknown powers. So far, Madara is known to have the ability to manipulate space and time: he can remove parts of his body to avoid attacks, and move to different locations at the speed of light.

Kakashi's Sharingan

Kakashi Hatake received the transplant of one Sharingan of his friend Obito Uchiha, during the Great Shinobi War. Kakashi possesses less chakra than an Uchiha, so his body gets exhausted rapidly while using the Sharingan. Also, Kakashi's Sharingan cannot be deactivated; this is why he usually keeps it covered.  He can, however, activate and deactivate his MS using hand seals. How Kakashi obtained the MS is still mystery.
