Yahiko was a war orphan along with Nagato and Konan. They were trained by Jiraiya during the Ninja Wars where the Rain Country turned into a battlefield. He was outspoken and impulsive, but also strong willed and energetic. During his training with Jiraiya, he appeared to specialize in Water based jutsus. After Jiraiya left them, it is not known exactly what happened to Yahiko and the others other than they were involved in many battles.
