When Lee first enrolled in the Konoha Ninja Academy, he was teased by the other students because of his deficiencies in the arts of ninjutsu and genjutsu. This was because Lee was born without the ability to mold his chakra like the other children. However, Lee was stubborn and wanted to become a ninja at all cost. Although young Rock Lee

he lacked any innate talent or abilities, Lee made up for it by intensifying his taijutsu training and literally pushing himself to his physical and mental limits. His persistence caught the eye of Gai, who took Lee under his wing and taught him many advanced taijutsu abilities.

Lee highly respects his sensei Gai and tries to model every aspect of himself after him, even down to his clothing and hair cut. Lee also adopted Gai’s value in hard work and believes that even a “failure” can surpass as genius through arduous training. As a result, Lee sees “geniuses” such as Sasuke Uchiha and his teammate Neji Hyuuga as rivals. Lee formed a natural friendship with Naruto since they both advanced to where they are today only through hard work. Naruto refers to Rock Lee by the nickname “gejimayu” or “fuzzy eyebrows.”

When Lee first met Sakura Haruno, he immediately developed a crush on her even though she showed no interest in returning those feelings. Lee proved himself to Sakura by protecting her during the Chuunin Exam. Although Sakura is grateful towards Lee, she still views him as a friend.

In his battle against Gaara during the Chuunin Exam, Lee went all out to prove to himself and to his peers how much he has advanced as a ninja. However, he was not able to defeat Gaara’s sand defenses and had his left arm and leg crushed by Gaara’s Sand Coffin technique. For a ninja who only specialized in taijutsu, this meant that Lee could no longer pursue the path of a shinobi. However, when Tsunade became the Fifth Hokage, she offered Lee a choice to have his abilities restored through a risky surgical procedure that could cost him his life. Lee was hesitant but eventually decided to go through with the procedure. Fortunately, the surgery was a success and Lee regained his full taijutsu abilities and made his first comeback appearance in his battle against Kimimaro Kaguya.

Trivia: According to Masashi Kishimoto, Rock Lee, like his sensei Gai, was modeled based on famous martial artist Bruce Lee. They even share the same birthday: November 27.

Abilities and Jutsus:

	Strong Fist (Taijutsu) Strong Fist is the martial arts style normally used by Rock Lee. Its purpose is to use speed and strength to break bones and cause external injuries.		Konoha Whirlwind (Taijutsu) A spinning kick Lee performs after leaping into the air. It is often used to disorientate the opponent if it connects, allowing further combo moves to follow.
	Shadow of the Dancing Leaf (Taijutsu) After launching an opponent into the air, Lee jumps after him in a trajectory so as to appear to be shadowing him from below. Since the opponent is airborne and has his back to Lee, he is in a very vulnerable position to receive further attacks.		Eight Gates (Taijutsu) (Special) The Eight Gates refer to chakra gates in the body which regulate the flow of chakra. The release of a gate essentially removes the restraint on chakra flow in the body and allows the user to surpass his normal physical limits. However, using this technique also causes damage to the body, especially as more gates are opened.
	Front Lotus (Taijutsu) Performing this jutsu requires the release of the First Gate. Lee unwraps his arm bandages and performs the Shadow of the Dancing Leaf on an opponent. After wrapping the enemy in a tight bearhug, he then piledrives him into the ground head first.		Reverse Lotus (Taijutsu) Performing this jutsu requires at least the first three Gates to be opened. Using his incredibly enhanced speed, Lee pummels the opponent in a triangular pattern in the air. The final blow sends the opponent crashing into the ground at a deadly speed.
	Drunken Fist (Taijutsu) Lee becomes very drunk if he consumes alcohol, no matter how small the amount. But as a tradeoff, he becomes a natural user of the Drunken Fist martial arts technique. Although the strength of his attacks do not change greatly, Lee's movements becomes highly unpredictable and difficult to defend against.		Konoha Rising Gale (Taijutsu) A swift upward kick that is useful for disarming enemies quickly.
	Tonfa (Weapon) The tonfa is a baton-like martial arts weapon typically made from wood. Lee used the tonfa against the sword-bearing Kisame.		Full Power of Youth (Taijutsu) A combo attack used by Lee to defeat his clone in Part II. The combo ends with a powerful drop kick in the air which sends the opponent crashing into the ground.
