Obito was Kakashi Hatake's teammate while they trained under Minato Namikaze who at the time had not yet been promoted to Kage. He was first introduced in the Kakashi Gaiden manga story arc which took place during the Great Ninja War. As an Uchiha, many of his friends expected Obito to be a naturally talented ninja, but Obito was not very skilled at all and was quite clumsy for a shinobi. He was often late to meetings, which Kakashi often lectured him on. Obito also had a habit of crying when things got dangerous, but often tried to cover it up saying something got into his eyes or that it was just the eyedrops he uses. At the beginning of the Kakashi Gaiden arc in the manga, Obito had not yet awoken his Sharingan. He always wore goggles over his eyes, which could have been because of an eye condition.

Obito had a crush on fellow teammate Rin, but knew she had feelings for Kakashi. When Rin was captured by Rock ninja during their first mission under Kakashi's leadership, Obito insisted that they go after her because to him the life of a teammate and friend was more important than the success of the mission. During the battle against the Rock ninja, Obito was able to activate his Sharingan at a critical moment in order to detect their enemies who were using camouflage jutsu to make themselves invisible. Unfortunately, during the final battle against the Rock ninja leader, Obito sacrificed himself to save Kakashi and Rin, and had half of his body completely crushed by falling rocks. As a parting gift for Kakashi, who had lost his left eye during the mission, Obito asked Rin to transplant his remaining Sharingan to replace Kakashi's eyeball. Obito's name is carved on the memorial stone in Konoha with countless other shinobi who lost their lives while in the line of duty.

It has been speculated that Akatsuki's Tobi is actually Obito or is using his body. This is mostly due to the fact that Tobi has never revealed the Sharingan in his left eye, the same one which Obito had given to Kakashi.
