Genma appeared during the Chunin Exams after Hayate Gekko was killed before the final rounds. Genma took over and was the fourth proctor during the match between Sasuke Uchiha and Gaara. The match was interrupted when the Sand and Sound ninja began their attack on Konoha. Baki went head to head with Genma but the battle was not resolved.
Genma later appeared during the Sasuke Retrieval arc on a mission with Shizune, Iwashi Tatami, and Raido Namiashi. Genma and Raidou had an encounter with the Sound Four (Kidomaru, Jirobo, Sakon/Ukon and Tayuya), but lost the fight after their enemies activated their Cursed Seals. Fortunately, Shizune was able to find them in time to heal them.
