Gashira was the head of the Cloud Village delegation which
came to Konoha nine years ago to sign a treay to end a war. But the
Lightning Country's ulterior motive was to use this opportunity to use
their shinobis to kidnap a member of the Hyuuga clan and obtain
information on the powerful Byakugan bloodline limit ability. Gashira
attempted to kidnap Hinata Hyuuga during the night, but was caught and
dispatched by Hinata's father, Hiashi Hyuuga. The Lightning Country
denied the kidnapping and used Gashira's death to accuse Konoha of
inciting war. They demanded that Hiashis be killed and his body turned
over in reparation for Gashira's death. This ultimately resulted in Hizashi Hyuga,
Hiashi's twin brother and Neji's father, being used in Hiashi's place.
